The inaugural volume in the Thai Archaeology Monograph Series describes in detail the human skeletal remains from Ban Chiang in northeast Thailand. The skeletal material spans a period from 2100 B.C. to A.D. 200 and includes premetal, Bronze Age, and Iron Age deposits from a series of prehistoric societies. The history of Homo sapiens in Asia has long been a topic of interest among scholars investigating human biology. This study, which is based on one of the larger, comprehensively analyzed skeletal series ever excavated in the region, makes fundamental contributions to understanding human settlement in eastern Asia. The volume includes detailed summaries of metric and nonmetric variation recorded in teeth, skulls, and the rest of the skeleton, and evidence of disease of the Ban Chiang people. These data are used to examine a number of questions: Where did the people of Ban Chiang come from? Did more intensified agriculture influence the health of the people? How do the people of Ban Chiang compare to the inhabitants of other ancient sites in Thailand and to the modern peoples of Thailand and neighboring regions? Contrary to other groups experiencing similar transitions elsewhere in the world, no clear evidence for a decline in health over time is noted in the Ban Chiang skeletal series, suggesting continuity in a broad-based subsistence strategy even in the face of intensifying agriculture. The skeletal evidence further suggests a rigorous physical lifestyle with little evidence for infectious disease or interpersonal violence. She's retired early, feels useless and in limbo, and makes an abrupt decision to visit Maine and assist in her sister's genealogy research by exploring a legend that suggests an ancestor was the sole survivor of a shipwreck - a baby girl rescued by a lighthouse-keeping great great grandfather.In Maine, Tam meets a distantly removed cousin, Nat, who tells her of another local legend, an unidentified woman who is said to have returned to the lighthouse in the 1930's to drown herself, and whose ghost is sometimes seen at twilight walking the rocky shore.Together they fabricate a fantasy version of their ancestors' experience in the remote lighthouse, where it's possible a shipwrecked baby did wash to shore, and irrevocably changed generations of lives-a fantasy that also has a sexual component for the two of them. Still retaining an adolescent vision of herself as a partial invalid, Tam has had a habit of living and reliving the minor traumas of her past-but Nat gives her the chance to be someone different, yet still the same: Tam is, for all intents and purposes, a ghost, but Nat's version of her ghostliness ascribes to it the kind of heroic mystery and romance that Tam has always assumed her brother to have but which Nat now gives her for herself.Meanwhile, in the real world, to add to the drama, Tam has ''rescued'' a baby who has been taken from his teenage mother, by sneaking it out from the small seaside hospital, and hiding both mother and child with herself at the privately owned lighthouse where her ancestors once lived.Tam's romantic quest to experience her ancestors' tragedies and heartbreak takes the particular form of a fascination with Mary Catherine, an ancestor who died at the age of 33 and onto whom Tam projects all her own anxities but this alternate life is invaded by the reappearance of her brother. And Tam, in a commanding re-entry into the water, chooses to close the book on her life of self-imposed susceptibility.

Declamation - the practice of training young men to speak in public by setting them to compose and deliver speeches on fictional legal cases - was central to the Greek and Roman educational systems over many centuries and has been the subject of a recent explosion of scholarly interest. The work of Michael Winterbottom has been seminal in this regard, and the present volume brings together a broad selection of his scholarly articles and reviews published since 1964, creating an authoritative and accessible resource for this burgeoning field of study. The assembled papers focus on two related topics: the rhetorician Quintilian and ancient declamation in practice. Quintilian, who taught rhetoric at Rome in the second half of the first century AD, was the author of the Institutio Oratoria, a key text for Roman educational practice, rhetoric, and literary criticism. Subjects explored in the present collection range widely over not only the establishment and interpretation of the text and its literary and historical context, but also Quintilian's views on inspiration, morality, philosophy, and declamation, of which he was a practitioner. While the volume also offers detailed examinations of the texts and interpretations of a wide range of Latin and Greek authors of declamations, such as Seneca the Elder, Sopatros, and Ennodius, there is a particular focus on two collections wrongly attributed to Quintilian, the so-called 'Minor' and 'Major Declamations'. A major re-assessment of the manuscript tradition of the latter collection is published here for the first time.
