Widely recognized as a groundbreaking text, The New Urban Sociology is a broad and expert introduction to urban sociology that is both relevant and accessible to the student. A thought leader in the field, the book is organized around an integrated paradigm (the sociospatial perspective) which considers the role played by social factors such as race, class, gender, lifestyle, economics, culture, and politics on the development of metropolitan areas. Emphasizing the importance of space to social life and real estate to urban development, the book integrates social, ecological and political economy perspectives and research through a fresh theoretical approach. With its unique perspective, concise history of urban life, clear summary of urban social theory, and attention to the impact of culture on urban development, this book gives students a cohesive conceptual framework for understanding cities and urban life. In this thoroughly revised 5th edition, authors Mark Gottdiener, Ray Hutchison, and Michael T. Ryan offer expanded discussions of created cultures, gentrification, and urban tourism, and have incorporated the most recent work in the field throughout the text. The New Urban Sociology is a necessity for all courses on the subject.

Barry has a hard time moving forward in life. He desperately holds onto the past when he was a child and the truth about the world was hidden. He believed in love, he believed in peace, and he believed in his dreams but once his childhood was over everything had changed or everything had stopped lying to him. The world appeared empty and he refused to be a part of the emptiness. The more time goes by the less real the world appears to him and the less time he has in finding true love and true happiness.
Half-frozen and nearly dead, Gil Ryan rode into the little mountain town of Larkspur just ahead of a raging late-winter blizzard. He’d lost just about everything he owned when his pack horse fell through the ice on the Big Sandy River. Racked with fever and only recently healed from a gunshot wound, he was seeking a warm place to wait out the storm. But Gil had no way of knowing the surrounding Ensillado Basin was about to be plunged into a range war, or that the man whose bullet he’d carried was also in the Ensillado, leading an army of hired guns to rid the valley of its homesteaders. Barely recovered, Gil is hired by the town to bring order to the basin. But there’s more at play here than he originally realized, and Gil soon finds himself in the battle of his life, the stakes a kindly doctor’s loyalty and a good woman’s love . . . assuming the town doesn’t turn on him when the bullets start to fly. A vital, timely text on the viruses that cause pandemics and how to face them, by the New York Times bestselling author of How Not to Die. From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens—both pre-existing ones and those newly identified—emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what—if anything—can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies? In How to Survive a Pandemic, Dr. Michael Greger, physician and internationally-recognized expert on public health issues, delves into the origins of some of the deadliest pathogens the world has ever seen. Tracing their evolution from the past until today, Dr. Greger spotlights emerging flu and coronaviruses as he examines where these pathogens originated, as well as the underlying conditions and significant human role that have exacerbated their lethal influence to large, and even global, levels. As the world grapples with the devastating impact of the novel coronavirus 2019, Dr. Greger reveals not only what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones during a pandemic, but also what human society must rectify to reduce the likelihood of even worse catastrophes in the future.

From an award-winning journalist, the inside story of the brilliant, hypercompetitive young coaches who threw out decades of received wisdom to fundamentally remake America’s most popular sport. When Kyle Shanahan became the NFL’s youngest offensive coordinator in 2008, he had one prevailing rule: Tell me the why. If a colleague couldn’t justify his position by providing the unassailable reasoning behind it, he was told to get the hell out of Shanahan’s office. Shanahan and the members of his coaching tree—including Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel, Raheem Morris, and Matt LaFleur—came up in a sport where innovation was the exception, not the rule. There had been brilliant football minds before, from Paul Brown to Bill Walsh to Bill Belichick. But for the most part, coaches learned a particular system and stuck to it no matter what—no matter the players on their team, no matter what the opponent might do. This group of young coaches would change all that. The Why Is Everything is the story of old dogmas falling before astonishingly creative new strategies and game plans. Drawing on unmatched access across the league, longtime NFL reporter Mike Silver takes us into the key moments in this still-unfolding revolution, from the education of Mike Shanahan, Kyle’s father and a two-time Super Bowl champion, in the 1980s; to the Washington Redskins’ football laboratory in the early 2010s, where the coaches first worked together, shocking the league with their cutting-edge scheme for rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III; to McVay’s Super Bowl victory in 2022 and Kyle Shanahan’s Super Bowl agony in 2019 and 2024. Less than a decade after their emergence, these men are the stars of their profession and have helped propel the NFL to new heights of viewership and drama. With The Why Is Everything, Silver reveals how it all happened, and in the process gives us a timeless account of friendship, rivalry, and the never-ending pursuit of perfection.

Nurturing Equanimity: Building A Caring Culture provides a much-needed blueprint for organizations looking to create a calm, balanced, and focused environment inviting people to thrive in both their personal and professional lives. This blueprint of nurturing equanimity to build a culture that cares is a necessity for any organization concerned about identifying, recruiting, and retaining the human capital required to create a sustainable future in today’s post-COVID marketplace. Securing the right people for any organization is difficult in most markets; doing so as the economy emerges from the pandemic induced global recession challenges even the most satisfied workplace cultures. The pandemic’s disruption and residue created an unstable and imbalanced culture across organizations of all sizes and in each industry that exposed numerous negative workplace characteristics many either knew, or never stopped to consider. Examples included low wages, long and unnecessary commutes, bad management, and unfulfilling work. These characteristics were symbolic of organizational cultures outdated, toxic, and imbalanced created by incompetence, inertia, and ineptitude. The pandemic allowed employees to pause, consider their life situation, and realize their lives had been imbalanced for far too long. Required reading for individuals from small-to-medium sized businesses, large corporations, non-profit organizations, and government offices, Nurturing Equanimity: Building A Culture That Cares offers employers and employees alike a valuable resource to use as they chart a course forward in a post-pandemic marketplace.

A cursory glance at Hebrews' critique of Israel's fear at Sinai in Heb 12:18-29 suggests that the author has misunderstood or manipulated his sources. In the Pentateuch, the appointment of Moses as Israel's mediator receives explicit approval (Exod 19:9; Deut 5:28), while Heb 12:25 labels their request for mediation a "refusal" to heed the word of God. This book argues that Hebrews' use of the Sinai narratives resides on a complex trajectory established by four points: the Sinai covenant according to Exodus, the reenactment of that covenant according to Deuteronomy, the call for a NEW covenant according to Jeremiah, and the present reality of that covenant established by God and mediated by Jesus Christ. The basis for Hebrews' critique arises from its insight that while Israel's request established covenant-from-a-distance, Jesus demonstrates that true covenant mediation brings two parties into a single space. The purpose for Hebrews critique lies in its summons to Zion, the mountain on which Jesus sits at the right hand of God as the high priestly mediator of the new covenant.

Ryan Adams is American roots music's first superstar of the new century. First finding cult fame with alternative country band Whiskeytown, his rebellious image and photogenic street urchin looks have won a wide fan following that includes Elton John and Noel Gallagher. In this first account of his life, Michael Heatley traces Adams' progress from small town North Carolina to trysts with actress Winona Ryder, the broken romances and personal demons that have fuelled his most affecting work and his dedication to legendary country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons. Still in his mid twenties, Adams has the world at his feet. If, unlike Parsons, he opts for self-preservation rather that the self-destructive image he often portrays. This book assesses the past, present and future of a performer with the potential and the eclecticism to be 'the new Neil Young'.
A deftly crafted thriller that kept me turning pages---through politics, money, and murder---to the ending I didn't see coming." - Chris DeRose, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Fighting Bunch. A political thriller, tied in to real events, about an apocalyptic threat to America that is ticking remorselessly in the background while Americans continue their daily routines, oblivious to the danger. For years, China's spy agency has been watching the United States rack up trillions of dollars in debt, waiting for the right moment to weaponize that debt to collapse the American government and install a Communist puppet regime. At the same time, suburban accountant Andrea Gartner has been an outspoken critic of the debt as a leader in the South Carolina state Republican Party. When the United States elects President Earl Murray, he brings Andrea into his government as budget director to solve America's debt problem. But before the nameplate is even installed on her office door, China strikes, engineering an American debt crisis that brings the country to the brink of collapse. Government operations come to a screeching halt. With the American hegemon on its knees, China violently seizes the opportunity to fulfill its territorial ambitions in Taiwan and the South China Sea. Thrust into the rapacious, cutthroat world of American politics and surrounded by crises on all sides, Andrea begins a desperate effort to save the United States. Arrayed against her are cynical politicians and belligerent military brass, some of whom just might be secret Chinese agents. Will Andrea be able to keep the United States alive to fight another day? Or will America drown in a sea of red ink at the hands of the Chinese and see its democratic government replaced by a Chinese Communist puppet regime? American life as we know it is about to be obliterated by a debt bomb. And the only person who can save the country is a suburban accountant.
Algebraic Geometry Codes: Advanced Chapters is devoted to the theory of algebraic geometry codes, a subject related to local_libraryBook Catalogseveral domains of mathematics. On one hand, it involves such classical areas as algebraic geometry and number theory; on the other, it is connected to information transmission theory, combinatorics, finite geometries, dense packings, and so on. The book gives a unique perspective on the subject. Whereas most books on coding theory start with elementary concepts and then develop them in the framework of coding theory itself within, this book systematically presents meaningful and important connections of coding theory with algebraic geometry and number theory. Among many topics treated in the book, the following should be mentioned: curves with many points over finite fields, class field theory, asymptotic theory of global fields, decoding, sphere packing, codes from multi-dimensional varieties, and applications of algebraic geometry codes. The book is the natural continuation of Algebraic Geometric Codes: Basic Notions by the same authors. The concise exposition of the first volume is included as an appendix.
