Conventional object-oriented data models are closed: although they allow users to define application-specific classes, they usually come with a fixed set of modelling primitives. This constitutes a major problem, as different application domains, e.g. database integration or multimedia, need special support. Using an extended metaclass concept, this book provides for the solution of this problem a simple but extendible open object-oriented data model, a so-called RISC model. By introducing the basic concepts of the open object-oriented database management system VODAK, it demonstrates how the extended metaclass concept can be integrated homogeneously into object-oriented data models.
The titanic three-day battle of Gettysburg left 50,000 casualties in its wake, a battered Southern army far from its base of supplies, and a rich historiographic legacy. This volume contains the proceedings of the eleventh British National Conference on Databases, held at Keele University, England. During the last few years, parallel object-relational database management systems have emerged as the leading data management technology on the market. These systems are extensible by user-defined data types and user-defined functionality for the data. This work focuses on the efficient parallel execution of user-defined functionality. The main contributions describe techniques to support data parallelism for user-defined scalar and aggregate functions and intra-function parallelism for the execution of a scalar function on a large object, and a new technology to provide extensibility with regard to new set-oriented database operations that can efficiently implement user-defined functionality in parallel object-relational database management systems.

Glorious Recollections: J. Howard Wert's Lost History of the 209th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 1864-1865, including the Battles of Bermuda Hundred, Fort Stedman, and Petersburg is a Civil War regimental history originally written in 1894. It was not published at the time and has now been edited and supplemented for today's readers. Wert's text is both a detailed history and a devoted memoir. It describes his regiment's actions in the closing months of the war, particularly its participation in the battles of Bermuda Hundred, Fort Stedman, and Petersburg, and, after the war, its marching in the Grand Review. On the same pages, Wert also shows Civil War memory and veteran pride taking shape. The editors have supplemented Wert's manuscript with introductory and interpretive essays, personal documents from the soldiers, reminiscences from unit reunions, a biographical sketch of its commander, a collective portrait of one of its companies, and the rosters of the entire regiment. The publication of this regimental history, previously unknown, adds to our understanding of Pennsylvania soldiers serving late in the war. Many of them had prior service while others were enlisting for the first time, such as Wert himself. This history also deepens our understanding of J. Howard Wert, one of Pennsylvania's most productive historians, novelists, poets and educators in the late 19th century. His account of a notorious Harrisburg neighborhood, the "Old Eighth Ward," has been republished recently; his "lost world" science fiction novel, Alecto and Ebony, is being prepared for publication; his Civil War poetry has been well-known for over a century; his collection of Battle of Gettysburg artifacts is world famous; and with this book his accomplishment as a military historian comes to light.
The Quad Cities have a rich history of brewing that started with the influx of German citizens in the 1800s. Breweries were established on both sides of the Mississippi River. Some of these historic breweries managed to reopen after Prohibition, but national competition ultimately closed the last of these stalwarts in 1956.
