The situation is most frustrating and acute for today's graduate students, who must try to absorb as much general knowledge as is possible and also try to digest only a sm all fraction of the ever increasing morass of observational data or detailed theories to write a dissertation. This book is based on the premise that to study a subject in depth is only half the battle; the remaining struggle is to put the pieces together in a broad but comprehensive manner. Accordingly, the primary purpose of this text is to cut across the barriers existing between the various fields ofmodern physics (elementary particles; nuclear, atomic, and solid state physics; gravitation) and present a unified description of the quantum nature of forces encountered in each field at the level of the second-year physics graduate student. This unification is based on one-body perturbation techniques, covariantly generalized to what are now called "Feynman diagrams," and is formulated aS,a simple (but nontriv ial) extension of ordinary nonrelativistic, one-particle quantum theory.

Recent public discussion about the Allied bombing campaign against Germany, the expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe, and other German experiences during and following the Second World War have revealed what some see as an emerging tendency among Germans to perceive themselves as much the victims of wartime acts as other peoples. Through a survey of postwar literature, film, and other popular media, as well as public commemorations and other means of memorializing and discussing the past, K. Michael Prince demonstrates that the theme of German suffering has been an abiding and even overriding element of postwar German historical memory and a chief component of German cultural identity. While academics have focused their attention on Nazism, atrocity and genocide, and while Germany's official ceremonies and other acts of public memory have been similarly directed, it was the wartime sufferings of average Germans that have remained at the core of German historical consciousness, influencing their attitudes toward war in general and shaping Germany's role in world affairs.

Already as a young boy, I used to walk with my late father, an ardent naturalist at heart, though to his regret not by profession, in the fields and woods on Mt. Carmel where we lived. My father, being largely an amateur ornithologist but also loving other vertebrates, was less inter ested in the little creatures(-the invertebrates) so abundant under stones. These were, more often then not, isopods which are particularly abundant in the Mediterranean region of northern Israel, and therefore not difficult to encounter (Fig. 1). Thus, my interest in the terrestrial isopods started at an early stage. Many years later, after graduating from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, I worked as an assistant to my late friend and colleague, Professor Michael Costa, at the Teachers Seminary in Oranim. One day I found on my desk a copy of Edney's (1954) paper: Woodlice and the land habitat, which my friend left for me knowing of my interest in this group. Therefore, due to the stimulus of Edney's paper, and the many interesting questions it raised in my mind, I developed a lifelong interest in this amazing crustacean group. My research in the ecophysiology of this group followed to a large extent the directions formulated by Edney and Cloudsley-Thompson whose name will be mentioned throughout this book. Named after the German Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin, an early pioneer of rigid airship development, the Zeppelin was first flown commercially by Deutsch Luftschiffahrts (DELAG), the world's first airline in revenue service. By mid–1914, DELAG had carried over 10,000 fare-paying passengers on over 1500 flights. When war hit, it was employed to military advantage, wreaking carnage upon Britain's towns and cities. German defeat in 1918 temporarily halted the airship business. Though it bounced back with the construction of the Graf Zeppelin in the thirties, a series of accidents signaled the demise of the Zeppelin. Following the Hindenburg disaster of 1937, and in the midst of numerous political and economic issues, the Zeppelin was soon to be consigned to the history books. This new publication explores each facet of its history, and concludes by assessing the legacy of rigid airship development, still felt to this day.
