As the prophets have foretold, a child of power has been born unto the Turtle People of the Iroquois Nation. The Elders call him False Face Child, for he is the son of a powerful forest spirit. A living talisman, the child has inhuman eyes—black mirrors, ageless and deep—and all fear him. All but Jumping Badger, the most powerful war leader of the Bear People. He destroys an entire village to take the boy to use as a spiritual weapon. But his triumph is short-lived. The Bear People suffer terrible visions and hear the voices of the spirits. Strange ailments and mysterious deaths take them one by one. Though he is a seer, False Face Child is also a sad and lonely young boy named Rumbler. Twelve-year-old Wren befriends him and together they escape across the winter landscape of New York and Ontario with Jumping Badger close behind. He now fears the boy’s power and seeks to kill him. Their only hope is to stay alive long enough to find Rumbler’s legendary father, known only as The Disowned.

A former biotech engineer for the fallen Final Wave terrorist organization Anastasia Zima establishes a foreign asset to her handler, POTUS Kenneth Hill, in their partnership with an elusive, seditious cabal named The Shadow State. Their objective is to form a new world order with Vritra's remains coupled with geoengineering experiments at the hands of a technological, evil mastermind, Jagmohan Gyan, based in New York City plot to topple the free world ahead of the imminent 2024 Presidential Election imperiling the nation and the entire planet. Abhu (a.k.a. Caleb Porter) continues his career with a full year of experience under his belt at the Elite Justice Force Squad based in Atlanta, Georgia. Alongside his best friend and fellow stellar agent, Singh Puneet Sherpa, they both must work together with the entire EJFS to put a stop to the Shadow State before they attempt to accomplish their terrible goal. The race against time continues as the superagency encounters many dangers and obstacles in their quest to retain integrity, honesty, and justice in the political season while doing their best to protect humanity. A seditious and secret cabal known as The Shadow State begins to rear its ugly head while casting a terrible omen over the world through weaponized espionage and weather warfare. The story begins in the late-night hours in New York City on one rainy November night. An artifact buyer named Judson Clayborn from Upper Manhattan seeks out vital information regarding the whereabouts of the ancient necklace containing Vritra's dormant energy after Vritra was defeated in the previous year by both EJFS Agents Abhu and Singh. He meets with a darkly-clad individual who has the information Clayborn is seeking. Welcome to the carnival of nonsense where hankies turn into mischievous cats, a messiah is born with her feet in her mouth, you can fave hun by socking on the ree-raw and your favourite corn cakes are made of . . . are you sure you want to know? For the last eighteen hundred years Indian arts have been seen in terms of strictly classified emotional effects known as the nine rasas. The Tenth Rasa: An Anthology of Indian Nonsense celebrates, for the very first time, what Sukumar Ray called the spirit of whimsy, or the tenth rasa, through the topsy-turvy, irreverent, melodic genre of nonsense literature. This fabulous selection of poetry and prose, brilliantly translated from seventeen Indian languages across India, includes works by Rabindranath Tagore, Sukumar Ray, Vinda Karandikar, Gulzar, Dash Benhur, Manoj Das, Navakanta Barua, Mangesh Padgavkar, Sri Sri, Vaikom Mohammad Basheer, Kunjunni and other known, lesser-known and previously unpublished authors. In forms as varied as stories and songs for children and adults, lullabies, folk tales, Bollywood song lyrics and medieval court verse, the writers open doors to wildly imaginative worlds populated by peculiar characters and fantastical creatures, where only nonsense makes perfect sense. Crackling with wit, wordplay and riotous rhymes, and frequently revelling in pure gibberish, this immensely entertaining collection will delight you from start to finish.
The Salton Sea, California's largest inland lake, supports a huge bird population that is among the most concentrated and most diverse in the world. Sadly this environment is close to collapse from several environmental threats. This book describes the more than 450 species and sub-species.
The lives of Catullus and Horace overlap by a dozen years in the first century BC. Yet, though they are the undisputed masters of the lyric voice in Roman poetry, Horace directly mentions his great predecessor, Catullus, only once, and this reference has often been taken as mocking. In fact, Horace's allusion, far from disparaging Catullus, pays him a discreet compliment by suggesting the challenge that his accomplishment presented to his successors, including Horace himself. In Poetic Interplay, the first book-length study of Catullus's influence on Horace, Michael Putnam shows that the earlier poet was probably the single most important source of inspiration for Horace's Odes, the later author's magnum opus. Except in some half-dozen poems, Catullus is not, technically, writing lyric because his favored meters do not fall into that category. Nonetheless, however disparate their preferred genres and their stylistic usage, Horace found in the poetry of Catullus, whatever its mode of presentation, a constant stimulus for his imagination. And, despite the differences between the two poets, Putnam's close readings reveal that many of Horace's poems echo Catullus verbally, thematically, or both. By illustrating how Horace often found his own voice even as he acknowledged Catullus's genius, Putnam guides us to a deeper appreciation of the earlier poet as well.
The most comprehensive and detailed treatment of thermal radiation heat transfer available for graduate students, as well as senior undergraduate students, practicing engineers and physicists is enhanced by an excellent writing style with nice historical highlights and a clear and consistent notation throughout. Modest presents radiative heat transfer and its interactions with other modes of heat transfer in a coherent and integrated manner emphasizing the fundamentals. Numerous worked examples, a large number of problems, many based on real world situations, and an up-to-date bibliography make the book especially suitable for independent study. - Most complete text in the field of radiative heat transfer - Many worked examples and end-of-chapter problems - Large number of computer codes (in Fortran and C++), ranging from basic problem solving aids to sophisticated research tools - Covers experimental methods
Best known as the author of the pioneering Key to North American Birds, Elliott Coues (1842-99) was one of America's most renowned but least understood ornithologists and historians-as well as a naturalist, anatomist, taxonomist, writer and editor, Army surgeon on the American frontier, occultist, and the youngest person ever to become a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Now available in paperback, this comprehensive biography of a brilliant, ambitious, and phenomenally productive man ranks as the definitive life of Elliott Coues.
The study of genetic exchange resulting from natural hybridization, horizontal gene transfer, and viral recombination has long been marked by controversy between researchers holding different conceptual frameworks. Those subscribing to a doctrine of 'species purity' have traditionally been reluctant to recognise inferences suggesting anything other than a marginal role for non-allopatric divergence leading to gene transfer between different lineages. However, an increasing number of evolutionary biologists now accept that there is a growing body of evidence indicating the existence of non-allopatric diversification across many lineages and all domains of biological diversity. Divergence with Genetic Exchange investigates the mechanisms associated with evolutionary divergence and diversification, focussing on the role played by the exchange of genes between divergent lineages, a process recently termed 'divergence-with-gene-flow'. Although the mechanisms by which such divergent forms of life exchange genomic material may differ widely, the outcomes of interest - adaptive evolution and the formation of new hybrid lineages - do not. Successive chapters cover the history of the field, detection methodologies, outcomes, implications for conservation programs, and the effects on the human lineage associated with the process of genetic transfer between divergent lineages. This research level text is suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students taking related courses in departments of genetics, ecology and evolution. It will also be of relevance and use to professional evolutionary biologists and systematists seeking a comprehensive and authoritative overview of this rapidly expanding field.
