This book focuses on covariance and variogram functions, their role in prediction, and appropriate choice of these functions in applications. Since the early 1990s, Search Institute has invited and encouraged communities of all shapes and sizes to use its framework of Developmental Assets and principles of asset building to create strong, vibrant, and welcoming communities for children and youth. We have operated largely at the grassroots level, encouraging innovation and adaptation around a shared vision, rather than proposing a program or model for replication. We seek to learn as much from the communities as they learn from us. This book offers in-depth case studies of what happened in eight diverse c- munities that took up our invitation. In them, we see a wide array of strategies and approaches that, on the surface, seem to have little coherence. Geospatial Analysis: A Comprehensive Guide to Principles, Techniques and Software Tools originated as material to accompany the spatial analysis module of MSc programmes at University College London delivered by the principal author, Dr Mike de Smith. The project was discussed with Professors Longley and Goodchild. They kindly agreed to contribute to the contents of the Guide itself. As such, this Guide may be seen as a companion to the pioneering book on Geographic Information Systems and Science (now changed to Science and Systems) by Longley, Goodchild, Maguire and Rhind, particularly the chapters that deal with spatial analysis and modeling. Their participation has also facilitated links with broader “spatial literacy” and spatial analysis programmes. Notable amongst these are the GIS&T Body of Knowledge materials provided by the Association of American Geographers together with the spatial educational programmes provided through UCL and UCSB. The formats in which this Guide has been published have proved to be extremely popular, encouraging us to seek to improve and extend the material and associated resources further. Many academics and industry professionals have provided helpful comments on previous editions, and universities in several parts of the world have now developed courses which make use of the Guide and the accompanying resources. Workshops based on these materials have been run in Ireland, the USA, East Africa, Italy and Japan, and a Chinese version of the Guide (2nd ed.) has been published by the Publishing House of Electronics Industry, Beijing, PRC, www.phei.com.cn in 2009. A Chinese version of this 6th edition is due to be published in 2021 by Science Press.
Geronimo was hated by some of his own people, loved by others, but respected by all. The Odyssey of Geronimo, based on history and Apache culture but told through his eyes, is a revealing epic of Geronimo’s strengths, weaknesses, and character. During the debate, the famed Apache warrior and shaman of great power publicly shamed the powerful general for his lack of integrity in his dealings with the Apaches. No engineering structure can be built on the ground or within it without the influence of geology being experienced by the engineer. Yet geology is an ancillary subject to students of engineering and it is therefore essential that their training is supported by a concise, reliable and usable text on geology and its relationship to engineering. In this book all the fundamental aspects of geology are described and explained, but within the limits thought suitable for engineers. It describes the structure of the earth and the operation of its internal processes, together with the geological processes that shape the earth and produce its rocks and soils.
