A specification of uncertainty in any particular case is often difficult. For this reason Chaps. 3 and 4 are devoted solely to this problem. The derivation of fuzzy variables for representing informal and lexical uncertainty reflects the subjective assessment of objective conditions in the form of a membership function. Techniques for modeling fuzzy random variables are presented for data that simultaneously exhibit stochastic and nonstochastic properties. The application of fuzzy randomness is demonstrated in three fields of civil engineering and computational mechanics: structural analysis, safety assessment, and design. The methods of fuzzy structural analysis and fuzzy probabilistic structural analysis developed in Chap. 5 are applicable without restriction to arbitrary geometrically and physically nonlinear problems. Historically, the major emphasis on the study of purinergic systems has been predominantly in the areas of physiology and gross pharmacology. The last decade has seen an exponential in crease in the number of publications related to the role of both adenosine and A TP in mammalian tissue function, a level of interest that has evolved from a more molecular focus on the identity of adenosine and A TP receptor subtypes and the search for selective ligands and development of radioligand binding assays by Fred Bruns and colleagues (especially that for A receptors) that played z a highly significant role in advancing research in the area. In the 60 years since adenosine was first shown to be a potent hypotensive agent, a considerable investment has been made by several pharmaceutical companies-including Abbott, Byk Gulden, Takeda, Warner-LambertlParke Davis, Boehringer Mann heim, Boehringer Ingelheim, Nelson/Whitby Research and CffiA Geigy-as well as John Daly's laboratory at the National Institutes of Health, to design new adenosine receptor ligands, and both agon ists and antagonists with the aim of developing new therapeutic entiities. Obana and Haugh question the extent to which commonly accepted theories in pragmatics can readily explain sociopragmatic phenomena in Japanese. Studies of Japanese in pragmatics have often challenged the cross-linguistic relevance of dominant theories. However, they have also inadvertently perpetuated stereotypes about the Japanese. It is often been assumed, for instance, that Japanese people are less strategic, more polite and more reliant on tacit forms of communication than speakers of other languages. But the Japanese are not as polite as one might think. The aim of this book is thus to question those folk assumptions around politeness, impoliteness, irony and indirectness while at the same time emphasizing that close examination of sociopragmatic phenomena in Japanese yields important empirical insights that combat common theoretical assumptions in pragmatics. The content is structured in three parts, in which the authors highlight a key building block of a theory of sociopragmatics. Part I focuses on indexing through the lens of chapters on honorifics, routine formula and politeness strategies. Part II focuses on evaluating through the lens of chapters on giving/receiving expressions and honorific irony.
