For a shy guy, life is an awkward adventure. Everyday is filled with clumsy conversation, and solitude is a familiar friend. As a lifelong shy guy, Michael R. Ebert has been there. But he's never shared his secrets. Until now. In "Diary Of A Shy Guy," Ebert bares his soul in never-before-told short stories that take the reader inside a shy guy's unique mind. Spanning adolescence to adulthood, the timid Long Islander brings his biggest embarrassments to life in suspenseful fashion. From toilet dinners to window jumping to public speaking, the cringing never stops. But read with compassion, because shy guys are everywhere. And like Ebert, they have their own skeletons. Their own horror stories. And their own diaries.
Wherever we find ourselves in life, we’ll also find a line. Sometimes, the line is between people or places. Other times, it’s between thoughts and ideas. It divides. It creates sides. In “The Line,” Michael R. Ebert explores the lifespan of a line from its inception as a tiny dot to its transformation into a powerful barrier. The step-by-step text also shows the line’s impact on the masses from those who walk it to those that ultimately cross it. Regardless of one’s stance, the line’s effect is felt by all. But in the end, we can’t help but wonder if the line is just a line – and whether it even needed to be drawn in the first place.

In its heyday, Lake Ronkonkoma was a popular tourist spot with slides and boat rides. But by the ’90s, most people deemed it a washed-up, litter-ridden mess. Except for Kevin. And Nora. They saw something more. They saw something special. One summer morning, the timid teens see their lives collide in fateful fashion along the shore of Long Island’s largest lake. At first, silence abounds. But within hours, the metaphorical-minded twosome turns a dreary day into one of great realization. Through the cascading tide, they explore life, love and their truly meaningless existence. Bit by bit, the day disappears. And the young couple returns to their stale suburb. But throughout life’s ebb and flow of moments, they’ll always have that day on the lake.
This book provides an overview of different topics related to the theory of partial differential equations. Selected exercises are included at the end of each chapter to prepare readers for the “research project for beginners” proposed at the end of the book. It is a valuable resource for advanced graduates and undergraduate students who are interested in specializing in this area. The book is organized in five parts: In Part 1 the authors review the basics and the mathematical prerequisites, presenting two of the most fundamental results in the theory of partial differential equations: the Cauchy-Kovalevskaja theorem and Holmgren's uniqueness theorem in its classical and abstract form. It also introduces the method of characteristics in detail and applies this method to the study of Burger's equation. Part 2 focuses on qualitative properties of solutions to basic partial differential equations, explaining the usual properties of solutions to elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations for the archetypes Laplace equation, heat equation and wave equation as well as the different features of each theory. It also discusses the notion of energy of solutions, a highly effective tool for the treatment of non-stationary or evolution models and shows how to define energies for different models. Part 3 demonstrates how phase space analysis and interpolation techniques are used to prove decay estimates for solutions on and away from the conjugate line. It also examines how terms of lower order (mass or dissipation) or additional regularity of the data may influence expected results. Part 4 addresses semilinear models with power type non-linearity of source and absorbing type in order to determine critical exponents: two well-known critical exponents, the Fujita exponent and the Strauss exponent come into play. Depending on concrete models these critical exponents divide the range of admissible powers in classes which make it possible to prove quite different qualitative properties of solutions, for example, the stability of the zero solution or blow-up behavior of local (in time) solutions. The last part features selected research projects and general background material.
Everyone has a nutty neighbor. From trailer parks to posh penthouses, a peculiar person is always around the corner. Someone who never changes clothes. Or never leaves the house. For Michael R. Ebert, that nutty neighbor is a middle-aged, camouflage-wearing loner, who never ventures beyond the front stoop. Since coming to the Long Island complex, the stranger’s been incessantly interfering in Ebert’s everyday life. Patiently, the aspiring reporter tries to mind his own business. Until he links the man to a local crime. But as he investigates, Ebert’s expectations of the stoop-sitter are shattered. And he realizes the man who lives in the building across from him isn’t what he expected at all.
The necessity of eliminating the possibility of a large-scale nuclear conflict from the future of mankind is the most important problem of our times. There is no doubt that the probable aftereffects of such a conflict would by many times exceed the damage caused by the First and Second World Wars, the greatest in history. The question of the scale of the damage that would be inflicted upon liv ing nature by nuclear weapons has, however, not yet been fully clarified. It is clear that this damage would not be local, i.e., restricted to destruction in only the places of nuclear explosion. As a result of nuclear detonations, the atmosphere and hydrosphere would receive many harmful substances, including the radioactive waste products of nuclear reactions. These substances can be transferred by air flows and water currents over long distances, thus considerably increasing the area of harmful influence of nuclear bursts. There is no doubt that the indirect effects of nuclear warfare would inflict enor mous damage on mankind, since the present human society can only exist by a complicated system involving the production of foodstuffs, manufactured goods, medical supplies, etc. The destruction of even separate but important links of this system would bring about starvation, epidemics, and other calamities, which would spread to areas not directly involved in the nuclear conflict.
When Jess Nuzzo accompanied her mother to the supermarket, she never saw him watching her. And during the car ride home, she never noticed his vehicle behind them. But just days later, the voluptuous teen found herself face-to-face with a deranged man who's been romantically rejected one too many times. Now, in the face of great tragedy, Jess's mother and their cop friend, Pat Schmidt, struggle to track down the scheming stalker despite a sparse collection of clues. But can they find him before he strikes again? Little do they know he's watching -- and listening to -- their every movement throughout the quaint Long Island town. He's ready. He's waiting. And he's set to drown their hopes for good.
Although less common than a-amino acids, non-a-amino acids-where the amino group is not on the carbon immediately adjacent to the carboxyl group but is attached to another carbon in the chain (for example, the , d carbon)-are components of biologically important molecules, are significant in the pharmaceutical industry, and are useful starting ma

Besides sound, the boundless world of art has two other fundamental mediums: images and words. From paintings to paperbacks, most art has a visual or literary element. It's what grabs us. Touches us. Shapes us. In "Images & Words," Ebert brings the two mediums together in chilling fashion. Armed only with a camera and a pen, the creative Long Islander transforms ordinary scenes into a thought-provoking look at everyday life. A look filled with abandoned cars, vacant playgrounds and graffiti-filled tunnels. But beyond the bleakness, there is always hope. Dreams. And possibility.
