During the 1830s the United States experienced a wave of movements for social change over temperance, the abolition of slavery, anti-vice activism, and a host of other moral reforms. Michael Young argues for the first time in Bearing Witness against Sin that together they represented a distinctive new style of mobilization—one that prefigured contemporary forms of social protest by underscoring the role of national religious structures and cultural schemas. In this book, Young identifies a new strain of protest that challenged antebellum Americans to take personal responsibility for reforming social problems.In this period activists demanded that social problems like drinking and slaveholding be recognized as national sins unsurpassed in their evil and immorality. This newly awakened consciousness undergirded by a confessional style of protest, seized the American imagination and galvanized thousands of people. Such a phenomenon, Young argues, helps explain the lives of charismatic reformers such as William Lloyd Garrison and the Grimké sisters, among others. Marshalling lively historical materials, including letters and life histories of reformers, Bearing Witness against Sin is a revelatory account of how religion lay at the heart of social reform.

This chapter describes a systematic methodology for optimized materials selection and informatics to support it. The starting point is a set of technical requirements for component or subsystem. These are translated into a set of limits or target values for material properties or property combinations (“material indices”). It is then possible – given a comprehensive database of appropriate materials and their properties – to screen materials against these criteria, rank the remaining materials by their ability to maximize a target value of one or more indices, and finally draw in other associated documentation to make an optimally informed decision. The reasoning is made transparent by displaying the steps and the materials that pass and fail the screening steps on material property charts that present materials on axes of their properties or of the material indices. The full decision-making history can be captured and stored for traceability and future reference. We give examples of selecting materials to minimize the mass and cost for ties, panels, and beams. The method applies equally when the design objective is to minimize environmental impact or other criteria. Beyond this, the methodology can drive development of new materials that fill “holes” in property space. The chapter concludes with an example focusing on new lightweight hybrid materials.

Many myths surround male bodies and associated bodywork, especially when such bodywork is labelled culturally or socially atypical or 'problematic'. Bodybuilding, for example, has been explained in terms of gender inadequacy and an 'Adonis complex' akin to reverse anorexia, while men electing to undergo aesthetic cosmetic surgery are deemed 'too concerned' about their appearance and thus woman-like. Myths also discredit men and boys who do not engage in appropriate bodywork when this is expected. For instance, amidst public health concerns surrounding a so-called 'obesity epidemic', men and boys who resist physical activity and/or attempts to promote a 'healthy weight' are deemed ignorant, apathetic and in need of correction. Drawing on extensive field research conducted in North America and Britain over a twenty year period, this book challenges such masculine myth making.
