This publication, part of the ongoing mandate of the Canadian Architectural Archives to examine the characteristics of Canadian architecture as reflected in the collections of the University of Calgary Library, examines twelve architect-created houses designed between the 1940s and the 1980s for several distinct regions of Canada. The architects chosen number among the most prolific and best known in Canada who were working during this period, including Raymond T. Affleck, Raymond Moriyama, Arthur Erickson, Douglas Cardinal, John B. Parkin Associates, and Patkau Architects.Other architects with perhaps a more regional reputation have also been included, such as the Vancouver-based firm of McCarter & Nairne, Calgary's Jack Long, and Edmonton's Peter Hemingway.Apart from the documentation of the twelve houses (drawings and photos), there are interpretative essays on each. A co-authored introductory essay explores several related themes: modernity, the contemporary house, approaches to landscape, and the role of drawings in contemporary practice.

Michael Bradley joined his school friend's group in Derry, Northern Ireland in the summer of 1974. They had two guitars and no singer. Four years later the Undertones recorded 'Teenage Kicks', John Peel's favourite record, and became one of the most fondly remembered UK bands of the post punk era. Sticking to their punk rock principles, they signed terrible deals, made great records and had a wonderful time. They broke up in 1983 when they realised there was no pot of gold at the end of the rock and roll rainbow. His story is a bitter-sweet, heart-warming and occasionally droll tale of unlikely success, petty feuding and playful mischief during five years of growing up in the music industry. During the First World War approximately 200,000 Irish men and 5,000 Irish women served in the British armed forces. All were volunteers and a very high proportion were from Catholic and Nationalist communities. This book is the first comprehensive analysis of Irish recruitment between 1914 and 1918 for the island of Ireland as a whole. It makes extensive use of previously neglected internal British army recruiting returns held at The National Archives, Kew, along with other valuable archival and newspaper sources. There has been a tendency to discount the importance of political factors in Irish recruitment, but this book demonstrates that recruitment campaigns organised under the auspices of the Irish National Volunteers and Ulster Volunteer Force were the earliest and some of the most effective campaigns run throughout the war. The British government conspicuously failed to create an effective recruiting organisation or to mobilise civic society in Ireland. While the military mobilisation which occurred between 1914 and 1918 was the largest in Irish history, British officials persistently characterised it as inadequate, threatening to introduce conscription in 1918. This book also reflects on the disparity of sacrifice between North-East Ulster and the rest of Ireland, urban and rural Ireland, and Ireland and Great Britain.

Braden and his coauthors give a comprehensive overview of the use of polymers and polymer composites as dental materials.
