This book takes the following question as its starting point: What are some of the crucial things the reader must do in order to make sense of a literary narrative? The book is a study of the texture of narrative fiction, using stylistics, corpus linguistic principles (especially Hoey’s work on lexical patterning), narratological ideas, and cognitive stylistic work by Werth, Emmott, and others. Michael Toolan explores the textual/grammatical nature of fictional narratives, critically re-examining foundational ideas about the role of lexical patterning in narrative texts, and also engages the cognitive or psychological processes at play in literary reading. The study grows out of the theoretical questions that stylistic analyses of extended fictional texts raise, concerning the nature of narrative comprehension and the reader’s experience in the course of reading narratives, and particularly concerning the role of language in that comprehension and experience. The ideas of situation, repetition and picturing are all central to the book’s argument about how readers process story, and Toolan also considers the ethical and emotional involvement of the reader, developing hypotheses about the text-linguistic characteristics of the most ethically and emotionally involving portions of the stories examined. This book makes an important contribution to the study of narrative text and is in dialogue with recent work in corpus stylistics, cognitive stylistics, and literary text and texture.

It tells of my devotion to my family and to the less fortunate in this world. I have spent countless hours donating my rare blood, platelets, bone marrow and serums. This book tells the reason why I did this all my life, and what I have experienced with several business ventures. My first business was a plumbing company, which I started fresh out of high school. I was in business for over 17 years. I have spent several years managing rock bands, acting, and inventing. My most successful invention Plink, has been on grocery store shelves for over 12 years. I take great pride in what I do and I have always strived for perfection. I believe that persistence is the key to happiness and happiness leads to prosperity. Although I am not a rich man, I have been very successful in my life. I have owned 13 brand new cars, 3 Harley Davidson motorcycles, 5 boats, 5 houses, 4 vacant lots, 38 used cars, and I have had 56 jobs. Many of my success stories are described in detail throughout my book. The most interesting part of my book is my experience with my most recent company, Arizona Company Medical. Through Arizona Company Medical, I spent 3 years of my life furnishing Medical-Marijuana to hundreds of patients around the USA who were suffering from AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, Migraines, Anorexia, Glaucoma and many other diseases. Medical-Marijuana can be prescribed to ease the pain and suffering that accompanies these diseases. Also included in my book is the true story of how I was issued a Cannabis and Controlled Substance Dealer's License from the Arizona Department of Revenue, how the Federal Government collected taxes from the money I made in my business, but then busted me for distributing the same substance that I was licensed for. Details of my business and the Medical-Marijuana bust are outlined in my story. Also included are several real letters from patients who were customers of Arizona Company Medical, who wrote to me to inform me of their progress now that they have the appropriate access to their much needed medication, Medical-Marijuana. My goal is to work towards the legalization of Medical-Marijuana across the USA, and to get the proper help to those that need this medicine. May the Medical-Marijuana movement win the rights for the fight for the people of this great nation.

Various brain areas of mammals can phyletically be traced back to homologous structures in amphibians. The amphibian brain may thus be regarded as a kind of "microcosm" of the highly complex primate brain, as far as certain homologous structures, sensory functions, and assigned ballistic (pre-planned and pre-pro grammed) motor and behavioral processes are concerned. A variety of fundamental operations that underlie perception, cognition, sensorimotor transformation and its modulation appear to proceed in primate's brain in a way understandable in terms of basic principles which can be investigated more easily by experiments in amphibians. We have learned that progress in the quantitative description and evaluation of these principles can be obtained with guidance from theory. Modeling - supported by simulation - is a process of transforming abstract theory derived from data into testable structures. Where empirical data are lacking or are difficult to obtain because of structural constraints, the modeler makes assumptions and approximations that, by themselves, are a source of hypotheses. If a neural model is then tied to empirical data, it can be used to predict results and hence again to become subject to experimental tests whose resulting data in tum will lead to further improvements of the model. By means of our present models of visuomotor coordination and its modulation by state-dependent inputs, we are just beginning to simulate and analyze how external information is represented within different brain structures and how these structures use these operations to control adaptive behavior.

This extensively researched text concerning the life and career of Liverpool-born Black jazz musician Gordon Stretton not only contributes to the important debate concerning the transoceanic pathways of jazz during the 20th century, but also suggests to the jazz fan and scholar alike that such pathways, reaching as they also did across the Atlantic from Europe, are actually part of a largely ignored therefore partially-hidden history of 20th century jazz performance, industry and influence. The work also exists to contribute to a more complete picture of the significance of diaspora studies across the spectrum of popular music performance, and to award to those Liverpool musicians who were not contributors to the city’s musical visage post-rock ‘n’ roll, a place in popular music history. Gordon Stretton was a jazz pioneer in several senses: he emerged from a poverty-stricken, racially marginalized upbringing in Liverpool to develop a popular music career emblematic of Black diasporan experience. He was a child dancer and singer in the Lancashire Lads (the troupe which was also part of a young Charlie Chaplin’s development), a well-respected solo touring artist in the UK as ‘The Natural Artistic Coon’, a chorister and musical director with the Jamaican Choral Union and, having encountered syncopated music, a jazz percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist (not to mention a ground-breaking bandleader). All of these musical experiences took place through time on his own terms as he learnt his craft ‘on the hoof’ via many different encounters with musical genres from Liverpool to London, Paris, Brussels, Rio, and Buenos Aires. Gordon Stretton was truly a transoceanic jazz pioneer.
