The Harvard-educated, Jewish American philosopher Horace Meyer Kallen (1882–1974) is commonly credited with the concept of cultural pluralism, which envisioned immigrant and minority groups cultivating their distinctive social worlds and interacting to create an inclusive, ever-changing true American culture. Though living and teaching in Madison, Wisconsin, when he developed this influential theory, Kallen’s seven-year sojourn in the Midwest (1911–1918) rarely figures in accounts of the theory’s origins. And yet, Michael C. Steiner suggests, the Midwest, far from being a mere interruption in Kallen’s thought, was in fact the essential catalyst for the theory of cultural pluralism, a concept that continues to shape public debate a century later. This study presents a comprehensive look at a complex man who exhibited an unfaltering commitment to the military and to his soldiers but whose career was marked by controversy. As a senior Army officer in World Wars I and II, Lt. Gen. Edward M. Almond lived by the adage that "units don't fail, leaders do." He was chosen to command the 92nd Infantry Division—one of only two African American divisions to see combat during WWII—but when the infantry performed poorly in Italy in 1944–1945, he asserted that it was due to their inferiority as a race and not their maltreatment by a separate but unequal society. He would later command the X Corps during the Inchon invasion that changed the course of the Korean War, but his accomplishments would be overshadowed by his abrasive personality and tactical mistakes. This book addresses how Almond's early education at the Virginia Military Institute, with its strong Confederate and military influences, shaped his military prowess. Presented is a thorough assessment of Almond's military record; how he garnered respect for his aggressiveness, courage in combat, strong dedication, and leadership; and how he was affected by the loss of his son and son-in-law in combat during WWII. Yes, I'm Theman. The boy wonder. People love me. Kids think I'm cool. Girls are attracted to me. Kids parents think I'm special. I'm also full of it. I don't know for sure if any of this is true. I have a knack for creating my own world. A lot of kids buy into it - they believe I'm popular because I tell them I am. They don't know any better. The girls like it that I think they like me. I also work to convince many of them that I like them. And they like that. You see there's a lot of positive feelings going around. I like people. They like me. So everyone's happy. I'm nice about it, you know. Not cocky at all. I just believe my own press. I believe the reputation I've created for myself. Of course there are some exceptions- guys who don't accept me for who and what I say I am. I don't know if they're jealous or if I interfere with their desire to be perceived as cool and popular. Probably both. But I have subtle ways of making my detractors look like jerks. Or getting them blamed for things they didn't do. It all makes for a pretty darned good story.
