Those families of (closed) subspaces of a (real or complex) Banach space that arise as the set of atoms of an atomic Boolean algebra subspace lattice, abbreviated ABSL, are characterized. This characterization is used to obtain new examples of ABSL's including some with one-dimensional atoms. ABSL's with one-dimensional atoms arise precisely from strong [italic capital]M-bases. The strong rank one density problem for ABSL's is discussed and some affirmative results are presented. Several new areas of investigation in the theory of ABSL's are uncovered.

We develop a duality theory for small Boolean pretoposes in which the dual of the [italic capital]T is the groupoid of models of a Boolean pretopos [italic capital]T equipped with additional structure derived from ultraproducts. The duality theorem states that any small Boolean pretopos is canonically equivalent to its double dual. We use a strong version of the duality theorem to prove the so-called descent theorem for Boolean pretoposes which says that category of descent data derived from a conservative pretopos morphism between Boolean pretoposes is canonically equivalent to the domain-pretopos. The descent theorem contains the Beth definability theorem for classical first order logic. Moreover, it gives, via the standard translation from the language of categories to symbolic logic, a new definability theorem for classical first order logic concerning set-valued functors on models, expressible in purely syntactical (arithmetical) terms.

This book takes the following question as its starting point: What are some of the crucial things the reader must do in order to make sense of a literary narrative? The book is a study of the texture of narrative fiction, using stylistics, corpus linguistic principles (especially Hoey’s work on lexical patterning), narratological ideas, and cognitive stylistic work by Werth, Emmott, and others. Michael Toolan explores the textual/grammatical nature of fictional narratives, critically re-examining foundational ideas about the role of lexical patterning in narrative texts, and also engages the cognitive or psychological processes at play in literary reading. The study grows out of the theoretical questions that stylistic analyses of extended fictional texts raise, concerning the nature of narrative comprehension and the reader’s experience in the course of reading narratives, and particularly concerning the role of language in that comprehension and experience. The ideas of situation, repetition and picturing are all central to the book’s argument about how readers process story, and Toolan also considers the ethical and emotional involvement of the reader, developing hypotheses about the text-linguistic characteristics of the most ethically and emotionally involving portions of the stories examined. This book makes an important contribution to the study of narrative text and is in dialogue with recent work in corpus stylistics, cognitive stylistics, and literary text and texture.

This book provides a bridge between the theory of bases of Banach spaces and the study of certain types (reflexive, non-self-adjoint) of operator algebras, offering a viewpoint common to both areas. The authors give a characterization of those families of sub-spaces of a Banach space that arise as the set of atoms of an atomic Boolean subspace lattice (ABSL). They obtain new examples of ABSLs, including some with one-dimensional atoms. The latter are shown to arise precisely from strong M-bases of the underlying space. The authors also discuss, for any given ABSL, the question of the strong-operator density of the sub-algebra of finite-rank operators in the algebra of all operators leaving every atom invariant; some affirmative results are presented. On a separable Hilbert space, the given ABSL satisfies this density property if and only if a certain extremely non-commutative "factor" of it does. In addition, several other areas of investigation in the theory of ABSLs are considered, including "selection" from atoms, "slicing" of atoms, and the double commutant property. The authors also provide many examples.
