Across the modern era, the traditional stereotype of Germans as authoritarian and subservient has faded, as they have become (mostly) model democrats. This book, for the first time, examines 130 years of history to comprehensively address the central questions of German democratization: How and why did this process occur? What has democracy meant to various Germans? And how stable is their, or indeed anyone's, democracy? Looking at six German regimes across thirteen decades, this study enables you to see how and why some Germans have always chosen to be politically active (even under dictatorships); the enormous range of conceptions of political culture and democracy they have held; and how interactions among various factors undercut or facilitated democracy at different times. Michael L. Hughes also makes clear that recent surges of support for 'populism' and 'authoritarianism' have not come out of nowhere but are inherent in long-standing contestations about democracy and political citizenship. Hughes argues that democracy – in Germany or elsewhere – cannot be a story of adversity overcome which culminates in a happy ending; it is an ongoing, open-ended process whose ultimate outcome remains uncertain.

World War II and its aftermath brought devastating material losses to millions of West Germans. Military action destroyed homes, businesses, and personal possessions; East European governments expelled 15 million ethnic Germans from their ancestral homes; and currency reform virtually wiped out many Germans' hard-earned savings. These "war damaged" individuals, well over one-third of the West German population, vehemently demanded compensation at the expense of those who had not suffered losses, to be financed through capital levies on surviving private property. Michael Hughes offers the first comprehensive study of West Germany's efforts to redistribute the costs of war and defeat among its citizenry. The debate over a Lastenausgleich (a balancing out of burdens) generated thousands of documents in which West Germans articulated deeply held beliefs about social justice, economic rationality, and political legitimacy. Hughes uses these sources to trace important changes in German society since 1918, illuminating the process by which West Germans, who had rejected liberal democracy in favor of Nazi dictatorship in the 1930s, came to accept the social-market economy and parliamentary democracy of the 1950s.

In the past, conservative (or nonoperative) treatment of fractures of the hand has been the rule and severe and multiple fractures usually did not receive surgical atten tion. There are probably several reasons why this is so. Rarely did these fractures threaten life; they usually healed rapidly; and after immobilization, hand pain usually subsided. At the same time, intraarticular fractures frequently were unstable and often displaced and attempts to correct deformity were considered difficult to achieve. As a result, the ultimate joint motion in many cases was limited. It can fairly be said that decisions and techniques regarding internal fixation of small joints and bones were not known to most surgeons. Although the history of internal fixation is not extensive, there have been some exciting events. In the 16th century gold plates were used to repair cleft palates. Later, the Chinese employed wire loop sutures to correct difficult fractures. In the 18th century silver cerclage wires were used to achieve fixation and promote early bone healing. Although these fracture treatments occasionally proved successful, more frequently they did not and they never enjoyed wide acceptance. Doctors Alan Free land, Michael Jabaley, and James Hughes have described this history of bone fixation in a manner that is both colorful and educational and they have managed to extract the essential features that lend continuity to the story of the development of internal fixation.

Astrology in the Middle Ages was considered a branch of the magical arts, one informed by Jewish and Muslim scientific knowledge in Muslim Spain. As such it was deeply troubling to some Church authorities. Using the stars and planets to divine the future ran counter to the orthodox Christian notion that human beings have free will, and some clerical authorities argued that it almost certainly entailed the summoning of spiritual forces considered diabolical. We know that occult beliefs and practices became widespread in the later Middle Ages, but there is much about the phenomenon that we do not understand. For instance, how deeply did occult beliefs penetrate courtly culture and what exactly did those in positions of power hope to gain by interacting with the occult? In A Kingdom of Stargazers, Michael A. Ryan examines the interest in astrology in the Iberian kingdom of Aragon, where ideas about magic and the occult were deeply intertwined with notions of power, authority, and providence. Ryan focuses on the reigns of Pere III (1336–1387) and his sons Joan I (1387–1395) and Martí I (1395–1410). Pere and Joan spent lavish amounts of money on astrological writings, and astrologers held great sway within their courts. When Martí I took the throne, however, he was determined to purge Joan's courtiers and return to religious orthodoxy. As Ryan shows, the appeal of astrology to those in power was clear: predicting the future through divination was a valuable tool for addressing the extraordinary problems—political, religious, demographic—plaguing Europe in the fourteenth century. Meanwhile, the kings' contemporaries within the noble, ecclesiastical, and mercantile elite had their own reasons for wanting to know what the future held, but their engagement with the occult was directly related to the amount of power and authority the monarch exhibited and applied. A Kingdom of Stargazers joins a growing body of scholarship that explores the mixing of religious and magical ideas in the late Middle Ages.

The 4,000 dogs that served with our men in Vietnam in every service branch are America’s unsung heroes. American dog teams averted over 10,000 casualties and worked as scouts, sentries, trackers, mine, and tunnel detectors. They were so effective the Viet Cong even placed a bounty on them. Heroes yes, but our own government left most of them behind to an unknown fate.

The objective in this work was to analyze the structure and organization in the operations of a military organization that supports one of the greatest Divisions of the United States Army, the 3rd Infantry Division. The history of Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division as it relates to civilians employees, soldiers, family members and the Ft Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield Community. Morale, Welfare, and Recreation history started on the battlefields of World War 1 were Salvation Army sisters and Red Cross volunteers ministered to the needs of soldiers. The focus of this work provided administrative aspects of public administration and its effects on military success. On October 18th, 2007 Chief of Staff of the Army General George W. Casey Jr, and Secretary of the Army Pete Green signed and unveiled the Army Family Covenant pledging to support its soldiers and families, and active guard and reserve organizations with funding programs to deliver a quality of life commensurate with their service and sacrifices to the nation. It is this commitment that propelled and motivates this organization. The Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation exists because the United States Army states it is committed to the wellbeing of the community of people who serve and stand ready to defend the nation and enhance the lives of soldiers, their families, civilian employees and military retirees. In all organizations there will be transition, changes and improvements within their environments I hope with this work I have opened the minds and hearts of those brave men and women who love the military and the United States of America. With god on our side who can defeat us.
