As Jesus hung on the cross to pay the price for our sins, Scripture records that He uttered seven sayings. These are often referred to as The Seven Words of Jesus from the Cross. In the Gospels, Jesus spends a lot more time telling us how to live happily as Kingdom people than He does trying to convince us to join up as new believers. This book, titled, Keys to a Happy Life: The Beatitudes According to Jesus delves into the teachings of Jesus on what it takes to be happy. When we are saved, we are saved into eternal life, and that life begins today; not after we die. As Kingdom people, we have been saved into a walk with Christ, and into a lifestyle that is compelling, powerful, and different than the world around us. The Beatitudes are a beautiful and poetic introduction to the Sermon on the Mount. Some have felt they paint a picture of perfection that we can never achieve. Others have said that they were meant to confound us so that we would know we need grace. Still others have felt they are the essence of the gospel and a road map of how we can work our way to salvation. I believe that they are simply a picture of the characteristics and attributes of people who are already saved. The Beatitudes show us the fruit of salvation, not the roadmap to it. Elsewhere, scripture is clear that we are saved by God's grace, through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. That said, Jesus said "You will know them by their fruit." People who are saved will bear good fruit. To be truly happy in this life, we must be true to that inner Spirit of Christ which we received at the moment of our salvation. Jesus shows us in His Beatitudes and in His other teachings, what we must do to live truly happy and fruitful lives. Often, the path Jesus paints to happiness and fulfillment is contrary to the way our flesh and natural mind want to lead us. The path of Jesus does not go straight from point A to point B, but often takes surprising and unexpected turns!

Originally published in 1973, this book is about people and psychiatry. About people who rejected psychiatry as it was generally practised at the time, people who sought for and found alternative ways of caring for and healing one another. The author, who had been active in radical alternatives to psychiatry for some time, offers us a programme based not on drugs, repression and a ‘questionable’ expertise, but on human caring, greater awareness of the body, deeper communication between persons and a willingness to let the emotions flow. It is a challenging alternative which came at a time when the viability of scientific, theoretical and chemical approaches to distress were being questioned at all levels of society. This alternative includes the new direct methods of healing (making whole) such as Encounter, Gestalt, Bioenergetics, Psychofantasy – methods that do not do things to people but allow them to feel their way into change through experiment, flow and choice. The main focus of the book is People, not Psychiatry (PNP), the network set up by the author in 1969. PNP is open to all, and people in it help one another in times of stress and crisis, if they are asked to and when they are needed. One of the main assets of these networks is that they are an alternative and they are there. The book tells the story of PNP’s birth and growth. It is a personal story, a moving story, a story about people. In addition, the book contains some lively theoretical discussion, both simple and clear, in the course of which the author tentatively offers his own theory of neurosis – that many people become victims of the primitive logic patterns laid down in infancy, patterns that become reinforced through fear and habit and have to be dissolved or replaced if we are to enjoy a full, healthy, free-flowing life. The book is directed at doctors, patients, consultants, nurses, psychologists, social workers, therapists, in fact anyone involved in any way in the field of psychiatry. This book argues that there are deep connections between ‘poetic’ thinking and the sensitive recognition of creaturely others. It explores this proposition in relation to four poets: Marianne Moore, Elizabeth Bishop, Ted Hughes, and Les Murray. Through a series of close readings, and by paying close attention to issues of sound, rhythm, simile, metaphor, and image, it explores how poetry cultivates a special openness towards animal others. The thinking behind this book is inspired by J. M. Coetzee’s The Lives of Animals. In particular, it takes up that book’s suggestion that poetry invites us to relate to animals in an open-ended and sympathetic manner. Poets, according to Elizabeth Costello, the book’s protagonist, ‘return the living, electric being to language’, and, doing so, compel us to open our hearts towards animals and the claims they make upon us. There are special affinities, for her, between the music of poetry and the recognition of others. But what might it mean to say that poets to return life to language? And why might this have any bearing on our relationship with animals? Beyond offering many suggestive starting points, Elizabeth Costello says very little about the nature of poetry’s special relationship with the animal; one aim of this study, then, is to ask of what this relationship consists, not least by examining the various ways poets have bodied forth animals in language.

By examining the breakdown of language in several neuropsychiatric disorders, neuroscientists have identified brain circuits that are involved with metaphor, poetry, music, and religious experiences.
We examine the concept of medical futility by addressing several questions. Should doctors be attempting treatments that have little likelihood of achieving the goals of medicine? What are the goals of medicine? Can we agree when medical treatment fails to achieve such goals? What should the physician do and not do under such circumstances? Exploring these issues has forced us to revisit the doctor–patient relationship and the relationship of the medical profession to society. Medical futility has both quantitative and qualitative components. We argue that medical futility is the unacceptable likelihood of achieving an effect that the patient has the capacity to appreciate as a benefit. Medicine today has the capacity to achieve a multitude of effects, but none creates a benefit unless the patient has the capacity to appreciate it. In the futility debate wherein some critics have failed or refused to define medical futility, an important area of medicine has been neglected – palliative care – the physician’s obligation to alleviate suffering, enhance wellbeing, and support the dignity of the patient at the end of life. To provide a broader perspective we end with a view from Germany.
This book explores how different publics make sense of and evaluate anti-terrorism powers within the UK, and the implications of this for citizenship and security. Drawing on primary empirical research, the book argues that whilst white individuals are not unconcerned about the effects of anti-terrorism, ethnic minority citizens (including, but not only those identifying as Muslim) believe that anti-terrorism powers have impacted negatively on their citizenship and security. This book thus offers the first systematic engagement with ‘vernacular’ or ‘everyday’ understandings of anti-terrorism policy, citizenship and security. It argues that while transformations in anti-terrorism frameworks impact on public experiences of security and citizenship, they do not do so in a uniform, homogeneous, or predictable manner. At the same time, public understandings and expectations of security and citizenship themselves shape how developments in anti-terrorism frameworks are discussed and evaluated. This important new book will be of interest to researchers and students working in a wide range of disciplines including Political Science, International Relations, Security Studies and Sociology.
