Anne Bradstreet, W.E.B. Du Bois, gene editing, and Junior Mints: cultural icons, influential ideas, and world-changing innovations from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cambridge, Massachusetts is a city of “firsts”: the first college in the English colonies, the first two-way long-distance call, the first legal same-sex marriage. In 1632, Anne Bradstreet, living in what is now Harvard Square, wrote one of the first published poems in British North America, and in 1959, Cambridge-based Carter’s Ink marketed the first yellow Hi-liter. W.E.B. Du Bois, Julia Child, Yo-Yo Ma, and Noam Chomsky all lived or worked in Cambridge at various points in their lives. Born in Cambridge tells these stories and many others, chronicling cultural icons, influential ideas, and world-changing innovations that all came from one city of modest size across the Charles River from Boston. Nearly 200 illustrations connect stories to Cambridge locations. Cambridge is famous for being home to MIT and Harvard, and these institutions play a leading role in many of these stories—the development of microwave radar, the invention of napalm, and Robert Lowell’s poetry workshop, for example. But many have no academic connection, including Junior Mints, Mount Auburn Cemetery (the first garden cemetery), and the public radio show Car Talk. On November 26, 1943 the United States sustained its largest loss of troops at sea. Over 2,000 U.S. servicemen were aboard the British troop ship HMT Rohna in the Mediterranean on their way to the China-Burma-India Theater of war. Traveling in a convoy, the Rohna and 23 other ships were attacked by German bombers. After a fierce fight that ended with no ships lost, a single bomber made a final run. Armed with the latest technology (a rocket powered, remote controlled Henschel HS-293 glide bomb), it set its sights on the Rohna. Many men were killed instantly by the direct hit. Rescue ships spent hours pulling survivors from the water. By the time the losses were totaled, 1,015 U.S. servicemen had lost their lives. During a four-year period, author Michael Walsh met with survivors at their annual reunions, sitting with them as they recorded their stories of that night. What most alarmed Americans was the knowledge that if this tragedy could occur at Kent State, on a campus made up of the children of the Silent Majority and in the heart of Middle America, it could happen anywhere. What were the issues and why did the confrontation escalate so terribly? Would there be future confrontations like the one of May 4? Advice On Things To Come, is a collection of eclectic essays and ideas that could potentially have a positive impact on the world. To make this book accessible it is available at a discount to educators to teach in their classrooms, and starts with a brief section on reading comprehension. Chapter 1 begins the book with some helpful advice about how to reduce the chances of credit card theft, and policy ideas that could take this further. Chapter 2 discusses how to repurpose payphones as a reimagined “Public Phone.” Such a device could be a much-needed life line especially for young people when things don’t go as planned. Later chapters in the book discuss ways to improve pharmaceutical medications, and make vaccines safer. Also, mentioned is how to create new and improved ecologically correct materials for retail customers and industry such as cell based leather or wood. The Author wrote a research essay in 2019, which became Part 3 of this book and was a major motivator for creating this book. It discusses the new emerging, extreme ecological danger of genetically altered microbes potentially causing major ecological disruptions. If genetically engineered microbes got loose in our farm fields and oceans. Towards the end of this book there are some helpful tips to increase happiness despite uncertain times. The world could use more guiding lights, which is what this book attempts to be.
