This study is the second of two I have done concerning how language is used to persuade others to believe things and to do things. The first, published by Aca demic Press, was The Language of Television Advertising, and was concerned with how advertisers use language in their efforts to sell products and services and how consumers could be expected to understand it. In this study, the focus is on how politicians use language to win elections and get others to accept their policies and programs and on how journalists report the suasive efforts of politicans. I combine an interest in the language of political reporting with an interest in the language of politics for a number of reasons. First, much of the suasive rhetoric of politicians is filtered through the minds of political journalists before it reaches the citizenry, and we can be reasonably sure that this rhetoric does not come out the way it went in. Second, the press plays a significant role in deter mining the nation's political agenda through its choices of what issues will be presented to the public, how these issues will be presented, and which voices will be heard speaking out on these issues. Third, political reporting can be suasive in effect, if not in intent, and it will be useful, I think, to understand how this is so.

James Michael Ullman (1925-1997) was an American novelist and newspaper writer/editor known for his work in and about the Chicago area. Ullman served in World War II and the U.S. Navy for two and a half years, and also served as an Air Force civilian employee on Guam. He was educated at Chicago's Wright Junior College and De Paul University, eventually receiving a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University in 1954. He became a newspaperman soon after, serving as police reporter on the La Porte, Indiana Herald-Argus, then as editor of the Skokie, IL News, and served as head of the United Press Bureau’s Chicago desk. He won a prize in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine’s 1953 contest with his first story, "Anything New on the Strangler?" His short stories continued to appear in EQMM through the early 1960s, when he turned to novels. In the Shadow of the Holocaust examines the struggle to attain post-war justice and prosecution. The originators of classical political economy—Adam Smith, David Ricardo, James Steuart, and others—created a discourse that explained the logic, the origin, and, in many respects, the essential rightness of capitalism. But, in the great texts of that discourse, these writers downplayed a crucial requirement for capitalism’s creation: For it to succeed, peasants would have to abandon their self-sufficient lifestyle and go to work for wages in a factory. Why would they willingly do this? Clearly, they did not go willingly. As Michael Perelman shows, they were forced into the factories with the active support of the same economists who were making theoretical claims for capitalism as a self-correcting mechanism that thrived without needing government intervention. Directly contradicting the laissez-faire principles they claimed to espouse, these men advocated government policies that deprived the peasantry of the means for self-provision in order to coerce these small farmers into wage labor. To show how Adam Smith and the other classical economists appear to have deliberately obscured the nature of the control of labor and how policies attacking the economic independence of the rural peasantry were essentially conceived to foster primitive accumulation, Perelman examines diaries, letters, and the more practical writings of the classical economists. He argues that these private and practical writings reveal the real intentions and goals of classical political economy—to separate a rural peasantry from their access to land. This rereading of the history of classical political economy sheds important light on the rise of capitalism to its present state of world dominance. Historians of political economy and Marxist thought will find that this book broadens their understanding of how capitalism took hold in the industrial age.

This book will follow the same path as volume one by continuing to explore the dark corners of the Lindbergh kidnapping. All the topics throughout this volume will be ones that were never properly examined or evaluated anytime in the past. And the facts revealed cause the historical account to become very unlikelyif not impossibleas a result. As with the first, it is an unorthodox stylea book that may not transition from one chapter to the next as is typical. There may be places where I repeat certain information and/or mention different versions which may not always match up. I do this intentionally so the reader will have all of the information necessary to draw a personal conclusion. I have been very fortunate to be able to access a number of sources that are either not well-known or privately held. Each of these has enhanced my knowledge of the case, and I have tried very hard to communicate the essential findings of each of these to you in this book. In this regard, my book is unique and should offer new information to anyone who reads it, including the most seasoned researchers.

The fighting on the first day at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, was unexpected, heavy, confusing, and in many ways, decisive. Much of it consisted of short and often separate simultaneous engagements or “firefights,” a term soldiers often use to describe close, vicious, and bloody combat. Several books have studied this important inaugural day of Gettysburg, but none have done so from the perspective of the rank and file of both armies. John Michael Priest’s “Strong Men of the Regiment Sobbed Like Children”: John Reynolds’ I Corps at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 rectifies this oversight in splendid style. When dawn broke on July 1, no one on either side could have conceived what was about to take place. Anticipating a fight and with a keen appreciation for terrain, Brig. Gen. John Buford deployed his Union cavalry in a giant arc north and west of Gettysburg to slow down any Confederate advance until Maj. Gen. John Reynolds could bring up his infantry. By the time the foot soldiers of the I Corps arrived, A. P. Hill’s heavy Confederate formations had pushed back the troopers from the west.
