Von Neumann was interested in general problems in the behavior of computing structures and was immensely impressed by the complexity and performance of the human brain, which he felt must point to wards successful designs for automatic computing machines.

Parallel Supercomputing in SIMD Architectures is a survey book providing a thorough review of Single-Instruction-Multiple-Data machines, a type of parallel processing computer that has grown to importance in recent years. It was written to describe this technology in depth including the architectural concept, its history, a variety of hardware implementations, major programming languages, algorithmic methods, representative applications, and an assessment of benefits and drawbacks. Although there are numerous books on parallel processing, this is the first volume devoted entirely to the massively parallel machines of the SIMD class. The reader already familiar with low order parallel processing will discover a different philosophy of parallelism--the data parallel paradigm instead of the more familiar program parallel scheme. The contents are organized into nine chapters, rich with illustrations and tables. The first two provide introduction and background covering fundamental concepts and a description of early SIMD computers. Chapters 3 through 8 each address specific machines from the first SIMD supercomputer (Illiac IV) through several contemporary designs to some example research computers. The final chapter provides commentary and lessons learned. Because the test of any technology is what it can do, diverse applications are incorporated throughout, leading step by step to increasingly ambitious examples. The book is intended for a wide range of readers. Computer professionals will find sufficient detail to incorporate much of this material into their own endeavors. Program managers and applications system designers may find the solution to their requirements for high computational performance at an affordable cost. This book examines British attempts to wage political warfare in the countries occupied by Germany in the Second World War. It describes the slow construction of political warfare machinery in London in terms of two twin difficulties: Whitehall politics and fundamental doubts about what a successful war should have as its purpose. It then examines how political warfare operated as a semi-detached adjunct of diplomacy, and how it engaged with the development of armed or "active" resistance in France, Denmark, Poland, and Yugoslavia. This is a study of British political imagination in a period when Britain still acted as a great power in control of her own decisions. The experience of near-defeat, however, left decision-makers with dilemmas about rhetoric and ideology as much as policy.Their refusal to resolve these dilemmas until pushed by events meant political warfare lacked the consistency and definition that might have given it greater force.

Constitutional Psychophysiology: Research in Review is based on the findings of a research project conducted by the psychophysiology research team at the Psychological Institute of the University of Freiburg, West Germany. This book is organized into four parts encompassing 21 chapters that summarize the numerous psychological, physiological, biochemical, and anthropometric measurements in extensive multivariate investigations of large student and cardiocirculatory patient samples. Part I describes first the heredity of morphological, physiological, and psychological characteristics, along with the concepts emphasizing morphological aspects, factor-analytic studies, and single aspects of the body build. This part also discusses the psychomorphological relationships; the relationships between biochemical findings and personality characteristics; the sympathicotonia-vagotonia concept; and the empirical studies on autonomic lability. Part II presents the physiological methods applied in the study, such as blood pressure measurement, physical circulatory analysis, and impedance cardiography. This part also considers the selection of criteria used for data collection, including validity, representativeness, reliability, stability, and objectivity. Part III explores the correlative procedures and classificatory methods. This part specifically tackles the common factor analyses of psychological and physiological variables and the issue of psychophysiological response specificity, which is important for psychosomatic medicine. Part IV discusses the most important conclusions of the study, demonstrating the lack of psychophysiological correlations and the nullity of psychophysiological covariance hypothesis. This book is of great value to research workers and graduate students in the fields of psychophysiology, genetic psychology, personality, and differential psychology, as well as psychosomatic medicine.

Multiview autostereoscopic displays (MADs) make it possible to view video content in 3D without wearing special glasses, and such displays have recently become available. The main problem of MADs is that they require several (typically 8 or 9) views, while most of the 3D video content is in stereoscopic 3D today. To bridge this content-display gap, the research community started to devise automatic multiview synthesis (MVS) methods. Common MVS methods are based on depth-image-based rendering, where a dense depth map of the scene is used to reproject the image to new viewpoints. Although physically correct, this approach requires accurate depth maps and additional inpainting steps. Our work uses an alternative conversion concept based on image domain warping (IDW) which has been successfully applied to related problems such as aspect ratio retargeting for streaming video, and dispa- rity remapping for depth adjustments in stereoscopic 3D content. IDW shows promising performance in this context as it only requires robust, sparse point- correspondences and no inpainting steps. However, MVS, using IDW as well as alternative approaches, is computationally demanding and requires realtime processing - yet such methods should be portable to end-user and even mobile devices to develop their full potential. To this end, this thesis investigates efficient algorithms and hardware architectures for a variety of subproblems arising in the MVS pipeline.

Other people needlessly expose themselves to disease by neglecting simple precautions. This book includes information on bacterial, spirochetal, rickettsial, and viral diseases as well as macroparasites and emerging zoonotic diseases. More than two dozen diseases are covered including rabies, tularemia, baylisascariasis, salmonellosis, leprosy, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and swimmer’s itch. Each chapter contains the history of the disease, symptoms in humans, medical treatment, transmission of pathogens to humans, the role of wildlife as vectors, and methods to minimize risk. The diseases people can contract from wild animals can be both threatening and fascinating, and the book includes interesting information to make it more enjoyable to read.
