The Vulnerability of Integrity in Early Confucian Thought is about the necessity and value of vulnerability in human experience. In this book, Michael Ing brings early Chinese texts into dialogue with questions about the ways in which meaningful things are vulnerable to powers beyond our control, and more specifically how relationships with meaningful others might compel tragic actions. Vulnerability is often understood as an undesirable state; invulnerability is usually preferred. While recognizing the need to reduce vulnerability in some situations, The Vulnerability of Integrity demonstrates that vulnerability is pervasive in human experience, and enables values such as morality, trust, and maturity. Vulnerability is also the source of the need for care for oneself and for others. The possibility of tragic loss fosters compassion for others as we strive to care for each other. This book demonstrates the plurality of Confucian thought on this topic. The first two chapters describe traditional and contemporary arguments for the invulnerability of integrity in early Confucian thought. The remainder of the book focuses on neglected voices in the tradition, which argue that our concern for others can and should lead to us compromise our own integrity. In such cases, we are compelled to do something transgressive for the sake of others, and our integrity is jeopardized in the transgressive act.

In The Dysfunction of Ritual in Early Confucianism Michael Ing describes how early Confucians coped with situations where their rituals failed to achieve their intended aims. In contrast to most contemporary interpreters of Confucianism, Ing demonstrates that early Confucian texts can be read as arguments for ambiguity in ritual failure. If, as discussed in one text, Confucius builds a tomb for his parents unlike the tombs of antiquity, and rains fall causing the tomb to collapse, it is not immediately clear whether this failure was the result of random misfortune or the result of Confucius straying from the ritual script by building a tomb incongruent with those of antiquity. The Liji (Record of Ritual)--one of the most significant, yet least studied, texts of Confucianism--poses many of these situations and suggests that the line between preventable and unpreventable failures of ritual is not always clear. Ritual performance, in this view, is a performance of risk. It entails rendering oneself vulnerable to the agency of others; and resigning oneself to the need to vary from the successful rituals of past, thereby moving into untested and uncertain territory. Ing's book is the first monograph in English about the Liji--a text that purports to be the writings of Confucius's immediate disciples, and included in the earliest canon of Confucian texts called ''The Five Classics,'' several centuries before the Analects. It challenges some common assumptions of contemporary interpreters of Confucian ethics--in particular the idea that a cultivated ritual agent is able to recognize which failures are within his sphere of control to prevent and thereby render his happiness invulnerable to ritual failure.

In the Physics of Emotioning, Michael D. Lukens, Ph.D. lays the groundwork and develops the concept of 'Emotioning', the force that acts upon every human mind to make us do what we do. This theory opens us to knowledge that will shift our paradigms, changing the way we view, study, and experience consciousness. Before the discovery of gravity, ancient civilizations and Greek philosophers filled in the blanks with 'godly' explanations for the existence, positioning, and movement of the planets and stars. Later, astronomers like Galileo and Brahe shed proverbial light on these subjects when they theorized that the planets revolved around the sun, further supported by Kepler's work that demonstrated that the planets moved in an elliptical orbit. The question that remained to be answered was . . . why? Whether under the influence of an apple-flavored concussion or not, Newton began formulating the answer to that fateful why question which would be the launching pad for a new era of science on earth and in space alike. Though gravity existed prior to the theory being developed, it's development ushered in the paradigm shift that allowed us to harness it and travel into outer space. The kickstart to the development of the Physics of Emotioning, wasn't a falling apple, it was Dr. Lukens's healthy heart, his love for people, and a genuine interest in guiding others to answer their own "Why" questions. Carrying the torch for B.F. Skinner, Lukens details the processes of human 'minding' from the standpoint of radical constructivism and structure determinism. His theory has practical ways to systematically deal with the 'Black Box' that is the mind, and he lays out the many inspiring potential implications this theory catalyses. By building a constructivist scaffolding, Dr. Lukens outlines how the Black Box is not as impenetrably opaque as behaviorists might believe, and maps out how we can approach an explanation of it in an empirically and scientifically sound manner. Ultimately and most importantly, the studying and harnessing of this force of Emotioning will allow all of us to let go of our limiting beliefs. It sets a new, quality precedent for self-observation and internal inquiry. This book, when put into practice by practitioners, scholars, healers, and lay-people alike, will open us up to knowledge that will shift our scientific and personal paradigms, change how we view the world, and help us better understand what it means to be "human".
The core of the book is the presentation of a systematic, continuous and logical chain into the coupled total energy system (GES) of the future, which will lead to the fully sustainable use of renewable energies. Thus, unified models are proposed that are applicable to the subsystems/sectors throughout and allow the optimization of the entire GES. Appropriate algorithms and approaches are illustrated with numerous examples. This is embedded in the context of efforts to fully integrate energy generated from renewable sources into the GES. The overarching role of IT systems for secure operations has been emphasized in the book. The relevance of the correct mapping of technologies to use cases is elaborated and necessary steps derived from this are considered technically and organizationally (standardization). Special attention is paid to the didactic presentation of the material in order to present this new, difficult and complex problem "as simple as possible, but not simpler" [according to Einstein].
Water screw conveyors have been in use for centuries. Their invention is attributed to Archimedes. However, the idea of using this Archimedean screw also as a hydropower screw to convert hydraulic energy into electrical energy did not emerge until the 1990s. More recently, hydropower screws have been used very frequently at hydropower sites and have now also attracted increasing interest from scientists and users worldwide. This is due to the machine's very good efficiency, it's simple and inexpensive design, and its fish compatibility. This book provides calculation fundamentals for hydropower screws. The author focuses on the description of the hydraulic processes and gives a design flow that can be used to design hydropower screws. The hydraulic behavior, dimensions, speed, efficiency, forces acting on the screw such as sag or lift, as well as the arrangement of the gearbox and the choice of generator are discussed. The theoretical equations, some of which are newly derived, are applied using examples. Finally, a design flow is given that can be used to easily adapt an optimally designed hydropower screw to a location. New findings presented in various scientific publications have been incorporated into the translation of the second German edition. In addition, experiments were carried out at different locations, which led to a better understanding of the available data basis. This has allowed the theoretical predictions of this book to be confirmed experimentally. In addition, the author has investigated a number of faulty installations and has been involved in the design of successful working waterpower plants equipped with hydropower screws.
In this book, the reader learns the essential differences to the passenger car through the analysis divided according to assemblies. This gives him the tools to apply the detailed knowledge he has acquired to the design and development of competition vehicles. The chassis determines the driving behaviour and thus the "DNA" of a racing vehicle like no other assembly. Starting with the tyre - the decisive mechanical component - all the components of the wheel suspension including steering and braking system are presented and discussed. The focus is on the double wishbone and suspension strut axles. The design of wheel suspensions starts with kinematic considerations, leads via component design to considerations of the vehicle dynamics. Ultimately, the maximum forces of the tires in the transverse and circumferential directions are to be exploited while keeping the vehicle controllable. Due to the detailed, in-depth presentation, the work is just as suitable for the interested motorsport enthusiast as it is for the engineer in practice who is dealing with questions relating to racing suspensions. The formula material is prepared in such a way that the book can also be used as a reference work.
In this book, the reader learns the essential differences to the passenger car through the analysis divided according to assemblies. This gives him the tools to apply the detailed knowledge acquired to the design and development of competition vehicles. The course for a successful car is set in the concept phase. For this reason, it is given a lot of space and associated design-related areas such as the choice of materials, lightweight construction, design principles, reliability, etc. are discussed. When considering the vehicle as a whole, however, safety systems (rollover device, crash elements, restraining ropes), the cockpit (driver position, seat with restraint system, steering wheel, gearshift, pedal system), the frame or monocoque, the outer skin and aerodynamic devices (ventilation, aerodynamic drag, downforce) must not be omitted. The detailed, in-depth presentation makes the work just as suitable for the interested motorsport enthusiast as it is for the engineer with a practical interest in questions relating to the complete vehicle. The formula material is prepared in such a way that the book can also be used as a reference work. .
Optimizing HPC Applications with Intel® Cluster Tools takes the reader on a tour of the fast-growing area of high performance computing and the optimization of hybrid programs. These programs typically combine distributed memory and shared memory programming models and use the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and OpenMP for multi-threading to achieve the ultimate goal of high performance at low power consumption on enterprise-class workstations and compute clusters. The book focuses on optimization for clusters consisting of the Intel® Xeon processor, but the optimization methodologies also apply to the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor and heterogeneous clusters mixing both architectures. Besides the tutorial and reference content, the authors address and refute many myths and misconceptions surrounding the topic. The text is augmented and enriched by descriptions of real-life situations.
One of us failed and one of us was blindsided. One of us is in vocational ministry today and one is not. Both of us know what it is like to need the restorative ministry of the local church, and how hard it is to find. 'The Christian Army is the only army in existence that shoots its own wounded' is a popular cliché because it is true. We have both experienced that trauma, but we are not victims." - the authors. There are multitudes of broken ministers and laypeople scattered across the globe that are "shipwrecked" from the faith. Broken people who have made bad choices or were broken by the bad choices of local churches. Why is this so? The Scriptures clearly teach, "Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted." (Galatians 6:1 ESV). Jesus Himself gave the parable of the shepherd who left 99 sheep in the fold to search for one that had been lost (Matthew 18:12). This book seeks to provide biblical and practical help for those who wish for their churches to "be catchers" instead of "pitchers." The authors share their personal implosions and personal stories from others who needed "reclaiming" because of a personal failure or a church failure. The authors provide a framework for how churches can develop a truly biblical culture of restoration that leads them to restore broken believers to a healthy relationship with God and His local church. In fact, the practical principles shared in this book were hammered out in the experience of a local church led by one of the authors, Pete Tackett. Antioch Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tennessee, has been transformed into a "reclaiming" church that has been used of God to restore several broken ministers and church members to spiritual health and usefulness. Pastor Pete met his co-author, Michael Stover, when reaching out to provide tangible assistance shortly after Michael and his family were ousted and moved back to Northeast Tennessee. This book is for every pastor, every deacon, every church member, and every denominational leader who desires to reverse the tide of discarding broken believers from our churches. So little of this is actually accomplished that we had to coin a new word for those being reclaimed - "restoree." Whom do you know that needs restoration? A young pastor chewed up and spit out by the traditional church "machine?" A deacon who cheated on his wife? A pastor who revealed years of personal sin, or whose sin finally exploded publicly? A church member who made a bad choice out of desperation and now is embarrassed to return to church? This book is actually for them - to revive and equip local churches and members to pursue them and restore them to spiritual health and vitality for the Kingdom's sake. Are you ready to pursue that journey? Pete Tackett is an experienced full-time pastor who currently leads an exceptional church that seeks to restore the broken. Michael Stover is a former minister of 20+ years who is now a full-time freelance writer and author. They both reside in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Aspiring to share his passion for life through writing and public speaking, Michael reveals intimate details of his lifelong jour¬ney through the pages of his tell-some book, "Happy Endings and a New Beginning." Michael was born in Southern California and grew up with a lot of family around him. At eight years of age, his family moved to Northern California to a small town a couple of hours from the Oregon border. He lived there with his mother, brother and new stepdad in a small town with small town values. Unfortunately, those small town values did not attach them¬selves to every person that Michael encountered. As such, Michael now speaks openly of the many years he endured sexual abuse by several different pedophiles, along with his sexual orientation and the struggles that illuminated because of his choices. He struggled to live two separate lives as he had been raised in a home and church where homosexuality was looked down upon, yet he tried to live his own truth. In order to cope with the mass confusion festering in his young mind, Michael casually began using street drugs, which led him to a fourteen-year affair with those same drugs and so much more. It darkened his life path. At age 33, Michael's high-life party¬ing came to an abrupt end, leaving him hospitalized and sober. He began looking to his Higher Power to sort out his life that was in a state of ruin. Now, years later, Michael shares his personal journey of mayhem over the years, how he met and fell in love with his wife and gives each one of us hope for a better tomorrow.

This work is an outgrowth of two profound life experiences. One took place in graduate school, preparing for a career as a clinical psychologist. One professor, well into middle age, began pontificating on homosexuality. Without hesitation he made a pronouncement which was delivered as the final immutable truth on the subject: Men do NOT love one another. It was delivered with a finality of conviction, of ultimate judgment. I wondered how he knew; how he could be so sure; what had given him the right to speak so authoritatively on a matter he in all likelihood had never experienced nor ever would. It struck me as the ultimate arrogance. That was 1980. The second experience was the ever popular enquiry: What do homosexuals do with each other? This question is rarely one of innocent curiosity but rather one of disbelief, incredulity, distaste, disgust, even thinly disguised contempt. Both these early experiences impressed me as a powerful negation of our core essence as gay men in the world. It seemed incredible that who we are should be dismissed with a wave of the hand, as if the gay experience is of no consequence whatsoever, a mere pock mark on otherwise unblemished skin. Even nineteenth century Victorians were never so cavalier about [hetero] sexuality. Few, if any of us, growing up in heterosexual society, avoid the experience of being wholly dismissed in this way, as if our very existence is irrelevant, perhaps should never have been. This is profoundly corrosive of our core sense of human integrity. An ineradicable message is implanted: that of deviate, defective, unworthy, condemned. This unavoidably etches a deep experience of shame within us all. Over the years, with maturity, we slowly come to terms with who we are, always at a price. What do homosexuals do with each other? The fulcrum of the question is on the do-ing. It completely ignores the be-ing; what does a gay man feel about men? How are such feelings distinct from those felt by heterosexual men for other men? The feelings we hold for one another are rarely of concern to the hetero. It just doesn't get asked. Curiosity stops here. It seems a discussion that prefers to be shunned. Bringing it up evokes fear and discomfort and embarrasment, even shame. We are cued into silence. It is a silence which intrudes into our shared moments of intimacy with other men. Unaware of our shame, we prefer instead to utter the body language of sex, giving voice to the feeling within, through the do-ing. Sex often serves an unwitting purpose of helping us avoid our feelings. What we take to bed with us is the commonplace heterosexual male model of using sex to spare us the whole range in feelings which naturally arise with intimacy between human beings. In their case, however, the female presence helps balance out this inclination. Healthy women are active seekers of intimacy and feeling expression. As gay men we are required to find this balance within ourselves. It wasn't so very long ago that, not only did we not have the right to have sex with one another; we didn't even have the right to be in one another's company. Meeting one another socially, in public places or private gathering was fraught with risk. In almost any gay bar or restuarant, entrapment by the vice squad was a very real threat. The accusation was tantamount to the conviction, particularly as to employers, authority figures, parents, family, community. This was a de-facto suspension of civil rights: freedom of assembly; freedom of association; freedom from harassment; threat, coercion, intimidation, habeas corpus, rights to privacy, and so on. Our lives were dismissed out of hand. Like the Jews in 1940's Europe, our very existence was taken from us. Like theirs, our very livelihood was at stake. We were relegated to the fringes of society, forced to live in shame and in secrecy. Certainly this did not provide a conducive atmosphere for
