This book is the first review of the scientific literature on the Africanized honey bee. The African subspecies Apis mellifera scutellata (formerly adansonii) was introduced into South America in 1956 with the intent of cross-breeding it with other subspecies of bees already present in Brazil to obtain a honey bee better adapted to tropical conditions. Shortly after its introduction, some of the African stock became established in the feral population around Sao Paulo, Brazil, and spread rapidly through Brazil. It has since migrated through most of the neotropics, displacing and/or hybridizing with the previously imported subspecies of honey bees. Africanized bees have been stereotype d as having high rates of swarming and absconding, rapid colony growth, and fierce defensivebehavior. As they have spread through the neotropics they have interacted with the human population, disrupting apiculture and urban activities when high levels of defensive behavior are expressed.
This book sheds some light on the band's remarkable music and, on this particular album, the blending of several styles into something that will never be replicated.
This is a devotional book that is inspired by Holy Spirit. It has been in the works since 2008. I wrote this devotional with one most important objective: to help people to understand the meaning of the word they are saying about themselves and each other and to help encourage people to meditate on the Word of God each day in order to empower themselves and each other in love, peace, and joy. It is for everyone, especially for every Christian worldwide, both denominational and nondenominational. This devotional is a word meditation form the Word of God (Bible). The Word This devotional provides a word for you each day to meditate on and to discuss with your friends and fellow Christians. It can be a devotional for a group discussion such as Group Book Club, Christian Group Book Club, Bible Study Group, and Friends Book Study Group. The Bible Reference This devotional provides a clear and understanding meaning of the word based on biblical principles; in addition, this devotional provides the Bible verse of each word and where it has been used in the Bible, the meaning of the word, and a practical application to our daily life. This devotional has a different title for each month, and it contributes to growing in understanding of the word from the Bible each day and every month. The Commentary This devotional portrays the character of God. The readers will gain deeper insight to God, His character, and His ways. They will be inspired to be more like Jesus. This devotional has a meaningful commentary on each Word and helps the reader to understand and give productive preceptive about the Word of God. Nowadays, newly developed software packages are often obsolete already at the time of their introduction. Object-oriented software development is a possible—if not the only—solution to this dilemma: applications are modeled as software objects that describe the properties and the behavior of real-world entities. Such objects are encapsulated, in that they hide—behind a publicly known interface—the complexity of their internal data structures and behaviors. This enables objects to be used in a wide range of program packages without needing to know the details of their internal implementation. Linking object-oriented modeled applications with a database places special demands on a database management system and development environment when the usual performance and semantics losses are to be avoided. This book provides a detailed description of the object model of the Caché postrelational database. This second, revised and expanded edition includes the many new features of Caché 5. There is a comprehensive description of the new Caché Studio with its improvements for developing and debugging applications as well as a whole new chapter about XML and SOAP based Web Services. The chapters about Java, ActiveX and the SQL manager have undergone a complete revision.
In this celebrated analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Michael J. Colacurcio presents a view of the author as America's first significant intellectual historian. Colacurcio shows that Hawthorne's fiction responds to a wide range of sermons, pamphlets, and religious tracts and debates--a variety of moral discourses at large in the world of provincial New England. Informed by comprehensive historical research, the author shows that Hawthorne was steeped in New England historiography, particularly the sermon literature of the seventeenth century. But, as Colacurcio shows, Hawthorne did not merely borrow from the historical texts he deliberately studied; rather, he is best understood as having written history. In The Province of Piety, originally published in 1984 (Harvard University Press), Hawthorne is seen as a moral historian working with fictional narratives--a writer brilliantly involved in examining the moral and political effects of Puritanism in America and recreating the emotional and cultural contexts in which earlier Americans had lived.
In this book the authors create a statistically validated scale measuring the display of each of the nine fruit of the spirit in employees. The authors will discuss how biblical values are applicable to contemporary organizational leadership and management. These nine virtues span a wide breadth of important personal and organizational attributes including benevolence, affection, gladness, relational harmony, tranquility, perseverance, helpfulness, caring for the welfare of others, adherence to the beliefs and value of others, power used soberly, and mastering one’s desires. While diverse in nature, the list also suggests a holistic development of personal and organizational character. Understanding the manner in which these traits can be measured will be a significant benefit to HRM and HRD scholars conducting research in Christian servant leadership.

Extend your ideas by studying the valuable virtues.
Are you seeking to understand yourself better? If so, In Your Element can provide you with wisdom to aid you in that quest. It combines the knowledge regarding the early use of personality profiling and animal totems to describe the inherent differences in the way people approach life and learning. This book explores how other cultures have used this knowledge to help guide people throughout their lives, helping them to embrace who they are as individuals. It outlines some of the many historical approaches taken to this topic, and then overlays the use of simple lifestyle changes, food as medicine, and Australian traditional remedies as time honoured ways for people of all ages to enjoy better health and emotional wellbeing. The simple truth that people are different-not just in appearance, but in thought and perception as well-needs to be acknowledged. What might work for one person may not have the same effect for another, even down to the medicinal properties of plants. Our modern way of life too often fails to take our inherent psychological and physiological differences into account, a fact supported by substantial research and documentation. Authors Michael White and Linn Wiggins offer a map for both unravelling some of the mysteries surrounding who you are and learning how to influence your physical and emotional health in a positive way. This ancient wisdom for modern times can not only bring you closer to the truth of who you are, but to the people around you as well.
First published in 1981. A Concordance to the Poems of John Keats intended to provide the user with a volume suitable to the varying and increasingly specialised interests of scholarship. This title offers a high degree of inclusiveness that attends to the poems and plays, the emended and authoritative headings, and virtually all of the variant readings considered substantive in the riches of the Keats manuscript materials. This title will be of interest to students of literature.
Death, like most experiences that we think of as natural, is a product of the human imagination: all animals die, but only human beings suffer Death; and what they suffer is shaped by their own time and culture. Tragedy was one of the principal instruments through which the culture of early modern England imagined the encounter with mortality. The essays in this book approach the theatrical reinvention of Death from three perspectives. Those in Part I explore Death as a trope of apocalypse — a moment of un-veiling or dis-covery that is figured both in the fearful nakedness of the Danse Macabre and in the shameful openings enacted in the new theatres of anatomy. Separate chapters explore the apocalyptic design of two of the periods most powerful tragedies — Shakespeare's Othello, and Middleton and Rowley's The Changeling. In Part 2, Neill explores the psychological and affective consequences of tragedy's fiercely end-driven narrative in a number of plays where a longing for narrative closure is pitched against a particularly intense dread of ending. The imposition of an end is often figured as an act of writerly violence, committed by the author or his dramatic surrogate. Extensive attention is paid to Hamlet as an extreme example of the structural consequences of such anxiety. The function of revenge tragedy as a response to the radical displacement of the dead by the Protestant abolition of purgatory — one of the most painful aspects of the early modern re-imagining of death — is also illustrated with particular clarity. Finally, Part 3 focuses on the way tragedy articulates its challenge to the undifferentiating power of death through conventions and motifs borrowed from the funereal arts. It offers detailed analyses of three plays — Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, Webster's The Duchess of Malfi, and Ford's The Broken Heart. Here, funeral is rewritten as triumph, and death becomes the chosen instrument of an heroic self-fashioning designed to dress the arbitrary abruption of mortal ending in a powerful aesthetic of closure.

From the preface: This book looks at virtue as "the power to do good" from the theological, philosophical, and poetic perspective. From a theological perspective: Long ago, Anselm defined theology as "faith seeking understanding," (f. 1) a definition which has endured to the present day. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to try to understand virtue or goodness without looking through some lens of faith....Get Goodness was written, in part, because my own faith was seeking understanding. Second, this book will look at virtue and goodness from a philosophical perspective because the word "philosophy" (from the Greek philos + sophia) means "love of wisdom." (f.2)...As we will find in this book, the virtue of love has been understood by most theologians and philosophers before me to be the essence of each and every virtue. Therefore, we must first love wisdom before we are able to practically discern, distinguish, deliberate and decide prudently in any effort to understand how virtue is the power to do good.... Third, this book will be suffused with poetry....because poetry is a language that goes beyond logic, thought, and reason.... It is a language of the spirit and a language of human life, love, observation, and experience....Any poem is an attempt to try to understand the experience of the world and the universe around us in spiritual terms. None of us should be seeking virtuous perfection in orienting ourselves to the good in this life; we should only be seeking change. The journey is the goal.

Brave Men, Gentle Heroes presents the honest, touching, and harrowing stories of men who served in World War II and of their sons who served in Vietnam -- fathers and sons bonded as deeply by their experience in war as by blood. Though World War II and Vietnam were vastly different -- the clear aims of World War II, the muddled goals of Vietnam; the hero's welcome accorded World War II veterans, the scorn heaped upon their sons -- each defined a generation. In these pages you will find war's carnage and heroism, purpose and futility, meaning and tragic meaninglessness. Molded by the awful crucible of war, these seemingly ordinary men offer extraordinary insights into what it means to be a warrior, an American, a father, and a son.

From action movies to video games to sports culture, modern masculinity is intrinsically associated with violent competition. This legacy has its roots in the 19th-century Romantic figure of the Byronic hero--the ideal Victorian male: devoted husband, sexual revolutionary and weaponized servant of the state. His silhouette can be traced through the works of authors like Lord Byron, Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling and Oscar Wilde. More than a literary genealogy, this history of the Byronic hero and his heirs follows the changes that masculinity has undergone in response to industrial upheaval, the rise of the middle class and the demands of global competition, from the Victorian period through the early 20th century.

The premise of this book is that the Beatitudes are like a stairway, each one leading to the next as a logical consequence of the one that came before, and that the rest of Matthew chapter 5 is a commentary, a fleshing out of the consequences of what the Beatitudes are designed to accomplish in our lives. The first Beatitude is salvation, and each of the others depict the gradual process of sanctification in our lives. In the rest of Matthew 5 Jesus shows us the true nature of our brokenness, and also the fantastic new identity we acquire once we enter the kingdom of heaven. This is not a scholarly work. It is about such wonderful news that God wanted to come here to tell it to us personally, as a loving human teacher. It can be read in a day or a weekend, or twenty minutes a day, as a devotional. It can be read more than once, with growing pleasure. It is not an analysis of what the great thinkers of the past have said. It references no commentaries. It is one mans insight gained by reading the Word, and looking up the meanings of the individual words, and contemplating what it adds up to. It is something that anyone can do, if they listen as they read, and ask the text questions. While it is nice to achieve letters behind our name, and become experts on scripture, most of us never will do that. But we all can hear from God when He speaks to us through His Word. There is a joy of discovery we can experience when we delve into the Bible. The Beatitudes can be thought of as Jesus introduction to how we start out on that path.
Translated By Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Tharchin with Geshe Michael Roach. The entire teachings of Buddhism explained in a few short pages by the greatest Buddhist master of ancient Middle Asia. The spread of the teaching of Gautama Buddha began in India over twothousand years ago and reached perhaps its highest peak in the hidden mountain kingdom of Tibet, five centuries before our time. The great illuminary of this renaissance of the religion of total peace was Tsongkapa (1357-1419). He inspired a movement that at its height saw nearly a million monks and nuns living in thousands of cloisters around the country. Tsongkapa was the greatest commentator in the history of Buddhism and wrote some 10,000 pages in eloquent explanation of the entire range of the ancient Buddhist classics. He undertook the challenge of compressing all this knowledge into a single poem. The result was his famous Three Principal Paths, fourteen verses written for a favored student in a faraway land. Tsongkapa's masterpiece appears here with a commentary by the illustrious Pabongka Rinpoche (1878-1941), generally regarded as the foremost Tibetan teacher of Buddhism during the last century. The work has been translated by Geshe Lobsang Tharchin, one of the last Buddhist masters of old Tibet. The cover shows a statue of Tsongkapa known as "Looks Like Me," named from Tsongkapa's comment at the unveiling of the image. Theoriginal stood in the great Jokang Temple of Lhasa, Tibet, and was destroyed.
The wheat and the tares live together, but no matter how long a tare lives amidst wheat it will never become wheat, likewise the wheat will never become a tare. The day of harvest is coming and it is difficult to tell the difference between the wheat and weeds; not because the weeds try to blend in with the wheat but because the wheat envies the tares. Are we not made a new creature in the likeness of Christ? How is it that we who are made righteous defile ourselves with base, unholy, and unrighteous deeds. It is not enough to be a Christian in name, Christ is coming back and He knows the sheep from the goats.
Long used by meditators as a way to inner peace, health, and vitality, intentional breathing can also be used as a calming technique when encountering stress, pain, and fear. He discusses breath, the central organizing life force, as it relates to emotional responses, lifetime habits, sleep, childbirth, sexual communion, and higher consciousness.

Three major conventional figures dominated Hawthorne's romances: the noble Founding Father, the "narrow Puritan," and the rebellious daughter. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Michael Schmidt’s anthology includes the work of more than a hundred poets from every part of the English-speaking world. What links their diverse voices is a common language: each poem, in its own way, adds to the resources of the medium and makes it new. The poems in this book are allowed to slip free of their moorings in the biography and history of the last century to create new spaces and times. They have been chosen because they are exceptional, profound and unique in what they do to language, regardless of their subject matter or the orientation of the poet. It is a powerful reminder that in the twentieth century poems did what they have never done before, and it provides us with a unique insight into the forces that will shape the poetry of the twenty-first century.
Radicals in Their Own Time explores the lives of five Americans, with lifetimes spanning four hundred years, who agitated for greater freedom in America. Every generation has them: individuals who speak truth to power and crave freedom from arbitrary authority. This book makes two important observations in discussing Roger Williams, Thomas Paine, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, W. E. B. Du Bois and Vine Deloria, Jr. First, each believed that government must broadly tolerate individual autonomy. Second, each argued that religious orthodoxy has been a major source of society's ills – and all endured serious negative repercussions for doing so. The book challenges Christian orthodoxy and argues that part of what makes these five figures compelling is their willingness to pay the price for their convictions – much to the lasting benefit of liberty and equal justice in America.

The fifth part of the book provides a transcript of a real therapy session modeling all of the skills covered in the book. It then summarizes of the material and provides learning aids for trainees and supervisors. ● Clinicians in all levels of training will benefit from: ● Skill building of empirically based methods ● Inspiring case examples ● Practical, structured exercises. “Mike and Maor have infused this amazing book with magic and warmth. It will transform your practice and bring joy and feelings of mastery into your ongoing clinical growth. Enjoy!” David Burns, MD
There are many devotional books available containing brief, daily inspirations that benefit all who read them. This book is different in two respects. The first is obvious: it contains two readings per day—732 in all. The second, more important difference is that the author wanted to do more than offer inspiration; this would make this book no different than so many others. The messages in the book are study sketches in that the content is not only inspirational, but also educational, challenging, and encouraging. Most of these writings were based on author Michael J. Akers’s teaching of adult Bible studies for more than thirty years and learning what really brought adults to want to deepen their knowledge and application of the Word of God.

There will be storms, there will be detours, and there will missed turns. We just have the know how to get back on that highway of life and get to our destination.
America’s Songs II: Songs from the 1890's to the Post-War Years continues to tell the stories behind popular songs in our country’s history, serving as a sequel to the bestselling America’s Songs: Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley. Beginning in 1890 and ending in post-war America, America's Songs II is a testament to the richness of popular music in the first half of the 20th century. This volume builds on the unique features of the first volume, delving deeper into the nature of the collaboration between well-known songwriters of the time but also shedding light on some of the early performers to turn songs into hits. The book’s structure – a collection of short easy-to-read essays – allows the author to provide historical context to certain songs, but also to demonstrate how individual songs facilitated the popularity of specific genres, including ragtime, jazz, and blues, which subsequently reshaped the landscape of American popular music. America’s Songs II: Songs from the 1890's to the Post-War Years will appeal to American popular music enthusiasts but will also serve as an ideal reference guide for students or as a supplement in American music courses.
