A vast body of folk narratives has carried the jackalope’s fame around the world to inspire art, music, film, even erotica! Although the jackalope is an invention of the imagination, it is nevertheless connected to actual horned rabbits, which exist in nature and have for centuries been collected and studied by naturalists. Around the time the two young boys were creating the first jackalope in Wyoming, Dr. Richard Shope was making his first breakthrough about the cause of the horns: a virus. When the virus that causes rabbits to grow “horns” (a keratinous carcinoma) was first genetically sequenced in 1984, oncologists were able to use that genetic information to make remarkable, field-changing advances in the development of anti-viral cancer therapies. The most important of these is the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which protects against cervical and other cancers. Today, jackalopes are literally helping us cure cancer. It has often been maintained that young children's knowledge is limited to perceptual appearances. In this "preoperational" stage of development, there are profound conceptual limitations in that they have little understanding of numerical and causal relations and are incapable of insight into the minds of others. Their apparent inability to perform well on traditional developmental measures has led researchers to accept a model of the young child as plagued by conceptual deficits. These ideas have had a major impact on educational programs. Many have accepted the view that the young are not ready for instruction and that their memory and understanding is vulnerable to distortion, especially in subjects such as mathematics and science. However, the second edition of this book provides further evidence that children's stage-like performance can frequently be reinterpreted in terms of a clash between the conversational worlds of adults and children. In many settings, children may not share an adult's well-meaning purpose or use of words in questioning. Under these conditions, they do not disclose the depth of their memory and understanding and may respond incorrectly even when they are certain of the right answer. In this light, a different model of development emerges with significant implications for instruction in educational, health, and legal settings. It attributes more competence to young children than is frequently recognized and reflects the position that development in evolutionarily important domains is guided by implicit constraints on learning. It proposes that attention to young children's conversational experience is a powerful means to illustrate what they know.

Florence is the largest city in Boone County and the second-largest city in Northern Kentucky. Formed in 1830, the city was for much of its history a small community surrounded by farms. During World War II, what was to become the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati International Airport was constructed nearby. This, combined with the construction of Interstate 75 in the late 1950s, started the building boom that drastically changed the community and began the huge growth in population that still continues. To commemorate the community's 175th anniversary, this volume presents Florence from its early history to the 1960s. It depicts a Florence that is relatively unknown to the majority of those living here. The images herein are courtesy of longtime residents as well as local church and public archives, with many being published here for the first time. Photographs illustrate the site of a Civil War skirmish and, perhaps most notably, local author John Uri Lloyd, who saluted Florence of old in his book Stringtown on the Pike, which gave Florence its nickname.

The Minute Man is a fictionalized account of the events leading up to, and including, the Battles of Lexington and Concord which took place in April 1775. This story focuses on three sets of players. First, there were the scheming Boston Sons of Liberty, including Sam Adams, Paul Revere and Joseph Warren, which drove the authorities to distraction and missteps. The second group is the British Army, officers and men, led by General Gage who became the pointed end of London’s stick. The last actors, for whom the book is named, are the townsfolk and farmers who made up the bulk of armed resistance the first day of the fighting. Both the agitators and the army brass had their vested interests, but the common man—both enlisted soldiers and villagers—bore the inevitable brunt of the conflict. The tale is one of not only of revolution, but of a nascent civil war, as a brother turns on his brother, and a wife betrays her husband. It is an emotional portrayal of what did, and what might have, happened in the character’s lives over those days. While the book starts with the Boston Tea Party, it was unclear to the participants at the time that it would be the opening scene of the Revolutionary War, which did not cease till many years later in the South.

During World War II, 300,000 United States Army Air Corps airmen were shot down. Of that number, 51,000 were prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. Bombardiers, positioned in the vulnerable bombardiers' compartment at the front of the aircraft, were in high demand. The authors' fathers were two such bombardiers, one on a B-17 and the other on a B-24. Like so many of the post-war generation, the authors traveled on their own emotional journeys to reconstruct their fathers' WWII experiences. Their fathers fought in the flak-ridden "blue battlefield," and like thousands of other airmen shot out of the sky, became prisoners of war. They would endure deprivation, loneliness, and great peril. Held at Stalag Luft III, where the Great Escape of movie fame took place, they, along with the British, were eventually force marched 52-miles in the dead of winter to Spremberg, Germany, and loaded onto overcrowded, filthy, boxcars, the Americans to be taken to Stalag VIIA in Moosburg, Germany, or to Stalag XIII-D in Nürnberg. Languishing until their liberation in barbaric conditions with nearly 120,000 international POWs, they witnessed the death throes of the Third Reich. With many sons and daughters trying to explore the wartime histories of their loved ones, the authors supply crucial information and insight regarding the World War II POW experience in Europe. Often times, by necessity, that experience reflects the co-existence and tenuous relationship with the Germans holding them. In this book, there are stories that up until now have not been heard, and there are hundreds of pictures, many previously unseen, illustrating the prisoners' plight. This book is a documentation of riveting history and a chance to vicariously live the war, told through their voices --echoes now fading with time. Their sacrifices to ensure precious freedom should never be forgotten.
