Winner of AIA's 2022 Anna Marguerite McCann Award for Fieldwork Reports The rugged highlands of southern Yemen are one of the less archaeologically explored regions of the Near East. This final report of survey and excavations by the Roots of Agriculture in Southern Arabia (RASA) Project addresses the development of food production and human landscapes, topics of enduring interest as scholarly conceptualizations of the Anthropocene take shape. Along with data from Manayzah, site of the earliest dated remains of clearly domesticated animals in Arabia, the volume also documents some of the earliest water management technologies in Arabia, thereby anchoring regional dates for the beginnings of pastoralism and of potential farming. The authors argue that the initial Holocene inhabitants of Wadi Sana were Arabian hunters who adopted limited pastoral stock in small social groups, then expanded their social collectives through sacrifice and feasts in a sustained pastoral landscape. This volume will be of interest to a wide audience of archaeologists including not only those working in Arabia, but more broadly those interested in the ancient Near East, Africa, South Asia, and in Holocene landscape histories generally.

The first volume in this collection is George Chicken, Carolina Man of the Ages; the second book is George Chicken Jr., Son of Carolina; and the third is Little Mistress Chicken, A Veritable Happening of Colonial Carolina. These three books examine the challenges, successes, and failures of the principals in each of the three generations of the George Chicken family as they engaged the dynamically evolving eighteenth-century Carolina frontier. The first book examines Colonel George Chicken, Indian Commissioner, backwoods trader, planter, and a bold political leader during the era of the Goose Creek Men. That fierce cadre of frontiersmen in the Goose Creek community near Charleston dominated South Carolina leadership for fifty years and led the first political revolution in Carolina. The Berkeley County South Carolina Chamber of Commerce published a brief edition of the first book of this trilogy in 2011. That exposed the need to expand that work, as well as unravel the mysteries of the two subsequent generations of Chicken personalities during the formative frontier decades. The second expos divulges the story of Captain George Chicken Jr., son of Colonel George Chicken, and an Indian trader, militia captain, parish commissioner, and formative personality in his own right. He mightily contributed to improved relations with distant Native American tribes that hardened the British hold on colonial Carolina. That research knitted the sagas of Colonel George Chicken with his son, George Chicken Jr., and begged to tell the tale of Catharine Chicken, heroine of the third generation. The third book divulges a sorrowful episode in the life of Catharine Chicken, daughter and granddaughter of the principal personalities of the earlier epochs. This final work of the trilogy vividly describes a colonial-era community; tells of the exploits, challenges, and transgressions of colorful townspeople of that place; and grimly recalls the trials and narrow survival of a tortured seven-year-old heroine, Catharine Chicken. The Chicken Trilogy vividly and dramatically illuminates bold personalities from each of three generations of the Chicken family and recounts their trials and tribulations as they persistently engaged the challenges of the evolving Carolina frontier.

The topic of this book is the notion of focus and its linguistic characterization. The main thesis is that focus has a uniform grammatical identification only as a syntactic element with in English at least a certain systematic phonological interpretation and presumably universally a range of semantic interpretations. In broad respects, the framework within this investigation is conducted is that of Chomsky & Lasnik (1977) and the subsequent Government and Binding framework. After considering defining the location of prominence in a focused phrase in terms of constituent structure, the author argues that an argument structure approach to the focus phrase/prominence relation is more promising. This is then exemplified in analyses of cleft focus and constructional focus.

The musical has been called "the most popular form of entertainment in the world." This work examines the subjects, themes, and contemporary relevance of Hollywood musicals through their long popularity, placing each show in historical and political context and analyzing it in detail. A chapter is devoted to how Golddiggers of 1933 (1933) and Stand Up and Cheer (1934) deal with the economic crises of the Depressions. Another addresses race issues by examining the prevalence of blackface minstrelsy in the 1930s and 1940s, looking at productions like Swing Time (1936) and Dixie (1943). Rock and roll culture, which started in the 1950s and threatened America with teenage sex and rebellion, is addressed through such hits as Girl Crazy (1943), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), and Grease (1978). The work also explores dance as a signifier of character, the geography of musicals (such as New York or "the South"), fantasy settings, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and the musical biopic (mentioning biographies of such figures as Ziegfeld, Cohan, Rogers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern). A later chapter discusses intertextuality in such shows as Singin' in the Rain (1952), which refers to many earlier musicals; Kiss Me Kate (1953) which refers to Taming of the Shrew; and All That Jazz (1970) which refers to the life and work of Bob Fosse. The work concludes with an examination of the continuing popularity of the musical with such hits as Moulin Rouge (2001) and Chicago (2002).
