This is the first known biography of Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell G C M G, former Governor of the Straits Settlements and District Grand Master of the freemasons in the Eastern Archipelago.The book traces his early life as an officer in the Royal Marines, where he served for 15 years, ending up with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, as well as his long, distinguished career in the Colonial Service, serving Queen Victoria in many countries including Natal in Southern Africa during and after the Zulu Wars, British Honduras, British Guiana, Fiji and Singapore.It is his time in Singapore that is given extensive treatment in the book. Having been sworn in as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of The Straits Settlements and their Dependencies (the 'Colony') on 1 February 1894, Mitchell inherited a colony, which was in very serious financial difficulty. With his prudent financial management, the governor brought the Colony back to a strong financial position and completed many projects. He was also instrumental in the implementation of the Federation of Malay States and was its first High Commissioner.His governorship was cut short when he died suddenly at the Colony's Government House (the current Istana) on 7 December 1899 and was buried in Singapore.However, his legacy was written out by his successor Sir Frank Swettenham who would take credit for the Colony's achievements. To this end, this book will go towards correcting the history of Singapore and Malaya at that time.The book also contains one of the very few public accounts of freemasonry in Singapore during the 19th Century and those of prominent freemasons participating in the colonial administration and commercial sector in the Colony.

Startling Figures is about Catholic fiction in a secular age and the rhetorical strategies Catholic writers employ to reach a skeptical, indifferent, or even hostile audience. Although characters in contemporary Catholic fiction frequently struggle with doubt and fear, these works retain a belief in the possibility for transcendent meaning and value beyond the limits of the purely secular. Individual chapters include close readings of some of the best works of contemporary American Catholic fiction, which shed light on the narrative techniques that Catholic writers use to point their characters, and their readers, beyond the horizon of secularity and toward an idea of transcendence while also making connections between the widely acknowledged twentieth-century masters of the form and their twenty-first-century counterparts. This book is focused both on the aspects of craft that Catholic writers employ to shape the reader’s experience of the story and on the effect the story has on the reader. One recurring theme that is central to both is how often Catholic writers use narrative violence and other, similar disorienting techniques in order to unsettle the reader. These moments can leave both characters within the stories and the readers themselves shaken and unmoored, and this, O’Connell argues, is often a first step toward the recognition, and even possibly the acceptance, of grace. Individual chapters look at these themes in the works of Flannery O’Connor, J. F. Powers, Walker Percy, Tim Gautreaux, Alice McDermott, George Saunders, and Phil Klay and Kirstin Valdez Quade.

An absorbing historical biography of the couple wed amid the chaos of the Napoleonic wars and their adventures from Europe to Asia to South Africa. The manner of their meeting was unprecedented. In 1812, during the lawless mayhem that followed the capture of Badajoz, Spain, by Wellington, a fourteen-year-old Spanish girl sought the protection of Captain Harry Smith. They fell in love and married shortly after. From then on, their lives and careers were inextricably linked and Juana not only followed her able, brave, and ambitious husband but built her own formidable reputation. This biography of the couple describes their lives together starting with the remaining battles of the Peninsular War. Harry Smith was already a favorite of Wellington, who insisted most unusually on giving away Juana in marriage. His card was marked and his career prospered. He distinguished himself in numerous campaigns and theaters. Most particularly he was credited with the victory at Aliwali in India. It is, however, the couple’s achievements and legacy in South Africa for which they have become most noted, after the exceptional circumstances of their first meeting. Travelers to the country are reminded of this by the towns named after them—Ladysmith and Harrismith. They would even become the inspiration for a 1940 romance novel by Georgette Heyer. This carefully researched biography, with illustrations included, tells their real story in fascinating historical detail.
