Above and Beyond Philosophy is a book of critical metaphilosophy which scans philosophy’s main branches and demolishes most of their content. The author salvages what relatively little is left. There are chapters on metaphysics, theory of knowledge, logic, language and ethics. It also briefly examines philosophy’s fractured history, it’s defects of method, some of the appalling influences it has had on history, politics and culture, as well as evaluating it’s worth and providing pointers to a truncated future. The book is accessible to the intelligent layman with no previous knowledge of philosophy, whereas most philosophy these days is written in technical language by university academics detailing small refinements to unprovable theories.

This book takes a critical but easy to read look at key subjects in the humanities, including our human limitations and the weaknesses in philosophy itself. It examines major areas such as religion, where thinkers go beyond science in an attempt to find the ultimate realities; it turns a sceptical eye on moral codes of social behaviour, artistic beliefs and values, and radically appraises just what we can come to know about our history. A final chapter probes behind the often fond and fanciful notions of that which we find meaningful in culture and our lives more generally. In short, an engaging, disturbing and thought-provoking modern world view is on offer here along the paths for tracking truth. A common theme that links the wide-ranging subjects in the book is to question the coherence of their character, in some cases their worth and desirability, and even their own reality. It poses a radical challenge to conventional ways of looking at matters across the humanities by combining the text with insights from contemporary continental thinkers. In Unreal there is largely a 'chopping down', yet the intention is not to be negative for the sake of it, but to ensure that people are not duped by the manifold cases of intellectual charlatanism in the wider world. That some of this erroneous thinking is extensive enough to encompass whole subjects is perhaps no surprise... yet it is both a scandalous and dangerous reflection on human thought.

This monograph explores the properties of passive and middle voice constructions in Norwegian and Swedish, concentrating on the linguistic variation related to these two constructions in Mainland Scandinavian. At an empirical level, we provide a detailed discussion of the morphosyntax and semantics of the two main types of passives in both languages, lexical (s-) and periphrasitic (bli-) passives. At a theoretical level, we propose an architecture of the language faculty where exponents play a central role. Exponents are selected to identify the structures generated by the grammar and provide a platform that make these units interpretable by the sensori-motor and conceptual-intentional interfaces. Exponents this play an essential role in determining the well-formedness of linguistic structures. We demonstrate how different syntactic structures identified and lexicalized by exponents in these two languages are capable of capturing the microvariation observed in the voice systems of these two languages in a straightforward way. The amount of linguistic information (i.e., aspect and mood) identified by each exponent in each language determines the types of complements and specifiers that can be integrated into and lexicalized by a given exponent. Although our approach shares certain affinities with other neo-constructionist approaches, a novel proposal we advance in this book is that exponents are housed in an intermediate level of structure that exists between the narrow syntax and its external interfaces. This exponency-level (Ʃ-structure) allows for a more parsimonious theoretical analysis that does not sacrifice descriptive adequacy.
