From 1958 to 1978 in New York a series of atmospheric irruptions emerged in the history of music, fraught with dissonance, obscurity, and volume. Beyond expanding musical resources into dissonance and noise with a familiar polemical edge, a group of musicians were thinking with sound: crafting metaphysical portals, aiming one to go somewhere, to get out of oneself. For many artists and thinkers of the postwar period, the self was taken to be ideological, given, normal. Their strange, intense, disorienting music was a way out, beyond, through the other, through the collective, through an ecstatic mystery. Their work had material underpinnings: radios, amplifiers, televisions, multi-track recording studios, and long-playing records. Some of the results were intricate, esoteric, and fractured; some of it oceanic and inconsistent. It was often difficult to tell the difference. In this new project, Michael Gallope discusses the work of several musicians who played key roles in these musical irruptions: David Tudor, Ornette Coleman, the Velvet Underground, Alice Coltrane, and Richard Hell and Patti Smith. Their work involved a larger group of collaborators, some of them among the mid-twentieth century's most celebrated artists and musicians: John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, and John Coltrane. This project is a history of the thinking embedded in their collective work, and it is a critical exposition of this period of time. Gallope details how avant-garde musicians of the postwar period in New York explored the philosophical dimensions of music's ineffability. He contends that the musicians at the center of each chapter-all of whom are understudied, and none of whom are traditionally taken to be composers-not only challenged the rules by which music was written and practiced, but also confounded gendered and racialized expectations for what critics took to be legitimate forms of musical sound. From a broad historical perspective, their arresting music electrified a widely recognized social process of the 1960s: a simultaneous affirmation and crisis of the modern self"--

Audain worked for an airline in the Arctic, became a probation officer and a farm appraiser, was detained in Ireland under suspicion of terrorism, and sought wisdom from a Buddhist monk in Thailand. In 1980, he took the most unexpected turn of all and became a developer in Greater Vancouver’s volatile housing market. As chairman of Polygon Homes Ltd. he has been responsible for the construction of over 30,000 homes. “My life never had a business plan,” muses Audain. The Stooges have come to be considered one of the most important rock bands, especially in regard to the formation of punk. By emphasizing their influence on later developments, however, critics tend to overlook the significance of the band in their own context and era. The Music and Noise of the Stooges, 1967-71 addresses such oversights. Utilizing the lenses of cultural criticism and sound studies (drawing on the thinking of Theodor Adorno, Jacques Attali, and Pierre Bourdieu, among others), as well as contemporary and archival texts, this extensively researched study analyzes the trajectory and musical output of the original Stooges. During the late 1960s and early 70s, a moment when the dissonant energy of rock’n’roll was more than ever being subsumed by the record industry, the Stooges were initially commercial failures, with the band’s "noisy" music and singer Iggy Pop’s "bizarre" onstage performances confusing their label, Elektra Records. As Begnal argues, the Stooges embodied a tension between market forces and an innovative, avant-garde artistic vision, as they sought to liberate audiences from passivity and stimulate an immanent joy in the rock’n’roll moment. The African subspecies Apis mellifera scutellata (formerly adansonii) was introduced into South America in 1956 with the intent of cross-breeding it with other subspecies of bees already present in Brazil to obtain a honey bee better adapted to tropical conditions. Shortly after its introduction, some of the African stock became established in the feral population around Sao Paulo, Brazil, and spread rapidly through Brazil. It has since migrated through most of the neotropics, displacing and/or hybridizing with the previously imported subspecies of honey bees. Africanized bees have been stereotype d as having high rates of swarming and absconding, rapid colony growth, and fierce defensivebehavior. As they have spread through the neotropics they have interacted with the human population, disrupting apiculture and urban activities when high levels of defensive behavior are expressed.

Child Protection in the Church investigates whether, amidst publicised promises of change from church institutions and the introduction of “safe church” policies and procedures, reform is actually occurring within Christian churches towards safeguarding, using a case study of the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania, Australia. Through the use of interviews and document analysis, the book provides an insight into the attitudes and practices of “ordinary clergypersons” towards child sexual abuse and safeguarding to understand how safe ministry is understood and executed in everyday life in the Church, and to what extent it aligns with policy requirements and criminological best practice. It adopts organisational culture theory, the perspective used to explain how clerical culture enabled and concealed child sexual abuse in the Church to the present, in order to understand how clerical attitudes (cognition) and practice (conduct) today is being shaped by some of the same negative cultures. Underlying these cultures is misunderstandings of abuse causation, which are shown here to negatively shape clerical practice and, at times, compromise policy and procedural requirements. Providing an insight into the lived reality of safeguarding within churches, and highlighting the ongoing complexities of safe ministry, the book is a useful companion to students, academics, and practitioners of child protection and organisational studies, alongside clergy, church leaders, and those training for the ministry.
