In 1834 the weary missionary Jason Lee arrived on the banks of the Willamette River and began to build a mission to convert the local Kalapuya and Chinook populations to the Methodist Church. The denomination had become a religious juggernaut in the United States, dominating the religious scene throughout the mid-Atlantic and East Coast. But despite its power and prestige and legions of clergy and congregants, Methodism fell short of its goals of religious supremacy in the northwest corner of the continent. In A Country Strange and Far Michael C. McKenzie considers how and why the Methodist Church failed in the Pacific Northwest and how place can affect religious transplantation and growth. Methodists failed to convert local Native people in large numbers, and immigrants who moved into the rural areas and cities of the Northwest wanted little to do with Methodism. McKenzie analyzes these failures, arguing the region itself--both the natural geography of the place and the immigrants' and clergy's responses to it--was a primary reason for the church's inability to develop a strong following there. The Methodists' efforts in the Pacific Northwest provide an ideal case study for McKenzie's timely region-based look at religion.

Nuclear medicine is the bridge between a particular clinical problem and a relevant test using radionuclides. It began as a minor technical tool used in a few branches of medicine, notably endocrinology and nephrology. However, throughout the world it has now become established as a clinical discipline in its own right, with specific training programmes, special skills and a particular approach to patient management. Although the practising nuclear medicine physician must necessarily learn a great deal of basic science and technology, a sound medical training and a clinical approach to the subject remains of fundamental importance. It is for this reason that we have attempted in this book to approach the subject from a clinical standpoint, including where necessary relevant physiological material. There exist many excellent texts which cover the basic science and technology of nuclear medicine. We have, therefore, severely limited our coverage of these aspects of the subject to matters which we felt to be essential, particularly those which have been less well covered in other texts - for example, the contents of Chapter 21 on Quantitation by Royal and McNeil. Similarly, we have included at the end of some chapters descriptions of particular techniques where we and the authors felt that it would be helpful. In order to emphasize the clinical approach of this book we have inverted the traditional sequence of material in chapters, presenting the clinical problems first in each instance.

The most immediate need is to realize there is a means to overcome the pain, and it involves having a spiritual life. This is the basis for this work's initial printing in 2012. Since the initial printing of the book's first edition, entitled Spirituality: Key to Physical and Mental Well-Being, it has become apparent to the writer that this pained spirit operates deceptively by lack of reason and purpose. This absence of rational-based thinking and preference for emotional feelings over reasoned behaviors represents our present place. This is how our world has adapted to the luxuries and illusions of security in the present social order. The result is a lack of critical concern for the individual's (and civilized societies) survival to be assured into the future. The theoretical address to this perceptual shift is the reason for the reprint of this book with two parts. The second part addresses this issue. It is entitled The Modern Perceptual Shift: Preference for Emotional Responses as Reality. It is important to understand that, although this book appears to be a scholarly and difficult read, it is essential to the well-being of the individual as a parent and productive member of society. In order to understand our world and our individual functioning, a read and consideration of this book is vital. To the mental health professional, this treatment provides a balanced approach to utilizing therapy to assist clients in gaining control over their world.
