Literary historians have long held the view that the plays of the Greek dramatist, Sophocles deal purely with archetypes of the heroic past and that any resemblance to contemporary events or individuals is purely coincidental. In this book, Michael Vickers challenges this view and argues that Sophocles makes regular and extensive allusion to Athenian politics in his plays, especially to Alcibiades, one of the most controversial Athenian politicians of his day.Vickers shows that Sophocles was no closeted intellectual but a man deeply involved in politics and he reminds us that Athenian politics was intensely personal. He argues cogently that classical writers employed hidden meanings and that consciously or sub-consciously, Sophocles was projecting onto his plays hints of contemporary events or incidents, mostly of a political nature, hoping that his audience's passion for politics would enhance the popularity of his plays. Vickers strengthens his case about Sophocles by discussing other authors - Thucydides, Plato and Euripides - in whom he also demonstrates a body of allusions to Alcibiades and others.

Catholics and Treason takes the narratives generated by the contemporary law of treason as it applied to Roman Catholics, during and after the Reformation of the Church in the sixteenth century, and uses them to explore the Catholic community's writing of its own history. Prosecutions of Catholics under the existing law and via new legislation produced a great deal of documentation which tells us much about contemporary politics that we could not garner from any other source. The intention here is to locate the narratives of persecution inside the context of the 'mainstream' history of the period from which, for the most part, they have been routinely excluded but out of which they partly emerged. In that respect, this is the history of the post-Reformation Church and State with the politics (of violence) put back. This volume takes as its starting point the magnum opus of Bishop Richard Challoner, his Memoirs of Missionary Priests, and it works backwards from that book into the period that Challoner describes. Historian Michael Questier seeks to reassemble as far as possible the historical jigsaw puzzle on which Challoner laboured but which he could not complete, thinking about the implications for our view of the post-Reformation and of the way in which Challoner and others described the Catholic experience of in/tolerance.

Ornithologists will find this an invaluable reference, especially to sort out birds named after people with identical surnames or in situations where only a person's forenames are used. But all birders will find much of interest in this fascinating volume, a book to dip into time and time again whenever their curiosity is aroused.

This paper studies the empirical and theoretical link between increases in income inequality and increases in current account deficits. Cross-sectional econometric evidence shows that higher top income shares, and also financial liberalization, which is a common policy response to increases in income inequality, are associated with substantially larger external deficits. To study this mechanism we develop a DSGE model that features workers whose income share declines at the expense of investors. Loans to workers from domestic and foreign investors support aggregate demand and result in current account deficits. Financial liberalization helps workers smooth consumption, but at the cost of higher household debt and larger current account deficits. In emerging markets, workers cannot borrow from investors, who instead deploy their surplus funds abroad, leading to current account surpluses instead of deficits.

The idea that morris dancing captures the essence of ancient Englishness, inherently carefree and merry, has been present for over four hundred years. The Ancient English Morris Dance traces the history of those attitudes, from the dance's introduction to England in the fifteenth century, through the contention of the Reformation and Civil War, during which morris dancing and maypoles became potent symbols of the older ways of living. Thereafter it developed and diversified, neglected and disdained, until antiquaries began to take an interest in its history, leading to its re-invention as emblematic of Victorian concepts of Merrie England in the nineteenth century. The quest for authentic understanding of what that meant led to its revival at the beginning of the twentieth century, but that was predicated on the perception of it as part of England's declining rural past, to the neglect of the one area (the industrial north-west) where it continued to flourish. The revival led in turn to its further evolution into the multitude of forms and styles in which it may be encountered today.

The thesis shows that it is impossible to explain financial bubbles clearly and without flaws with classical rationality and perfect markets. Furthermore this paper tries to unite various behavioral approaches to explain financial bubbles in a more realistic way. Financial bubbles imagine a great importance for the entire economy, caused by their strong economic impact. Therefore an understanding of these bubbles is crucial to counteract them. To gain the aspired results the paper will present empirical studies and inconsistencies in classic economic theory. Additionally it will adjust alternative behavioral models for financial bubbles. It will be shown how human behavior leads to inherent mistakes at financial markets, which cause financial bubbles. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Anwendung von psychologischen Verhaltensmodellen auf Finanzmärkte zur Erklärung von Finanzblasen. Es wird verdeutlicht werden, dass aus der klassischen Ökonomie stammende Theorien nicht in der Lage sind Finanzblasen fehlerfrei und eindeutig zu erklären. Daher bedient diese Arbeit sich psychologischer Modelle um Finanzblasen realitätsnäher zu erklären. Durch ihre immense Wirkungskraft beeinflussen Finanzblasen die gesamte Wirtschaft. Deswegen ist es außerordentlich wichtig diese zu verstehen um rechtzeitig Kontrollmaßnahmen einzuleiten. Um die angestrebten Resultate zu erreichen bedient sich diese Arbeit mehrerer empirischer Studien sowie Unregelmäßigkeiten in der klassisch ökonomischen Theorie. Weiterhin werden psychologische Modelle in einem einheitlichen Erklärungsmodell angepasst werden um Finanzblasen zu erklären. Dieses Modell wird verdeutlichen, dass es in der menschlichen Natur liegt Fehler zu machen. Diese Fehler führen auf den Finanzmärkten zu Finanzblasen.
