Literary scholar Michael A. Chaney examines graphic novels to illustrate that in form and function they inform readers on how they ought to be read. His arguments result in an innovative analysis of the various knowledges that comics produce and the methods artists and writers employ to convey them. Theoretically eclectic, this study attends to the lessons taught by both the form and content of today's most celebrated graphic novels. Chaney analyzes the embedded lessons in comics and graphic novels through the form's central tropes: the iconic child storyteller and the inherent childishness of comics in American culture; the use of mirrors and masks as ciphers of the unconscious; embedded puzzles and games in otherwise story-driven comic narratives; and the form's self-reflexive propensity for showing its work. Comics reveal the labor that goes into producing them, embedding lessons on how to read the "work" as a whole. Throughout, Chaney draws from a range of theoretical insights from psychoanalysis and semiotics to theories of reception and production from film studies, art history, and media studies. Some of the major texts examined include Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis; Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth; Joe Sacco's Palestine; David B.'s Epileptic; Kyle Baker's Nat Turner; and many more. As Chaney's examples show, graphic novels teach us even as they create meaning in their infinite relay between words and pictures.

In early nineteenth-century China, a remarkable transformation took place in the art world: artists among China’s educated elites began to use touch to forge a more authentic relationship to the past, to challenge stagnant artistic canons, and to foster deeper human connections. Networks of Touch is an engaging exploration of this sensory turn. In this book, Michael J. Hatch examines the artistic network of Ruan Yuan (1764–1849), a scholar-official whose patronage supported a generation of artists and learned people who prioritized epigraphic research as a means of truing the warped contours of Confucian heritage. Their work instigated an “epigraphic aesthetic”—an appropriation of the stylistic, material, and tactile features of ancient inscribed objects and their reproductive technologies—in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century artwork. Rubbings, a reduplicative technology, challenged the dominance of brushwork as the bearer of artistic authority. While brushwork represented the artist’s physical presence through ink and paper, rubbings were direct facsimiles of tactile experiences with objects. This shift empowered artists and scholars to transcend traditional conventions and explore new mediums, uniting previously separate image-making practices while engaging audiences through the senses. Centering on touch and presenting a fresh perspective on early nineteenth-century literati art in China, this volume sheds light on a period often dismissed as lacking innovation and calls into question optical realism’s perceived supremacy in reshaping the sensory experience of the modern Chinese viewer.

My journey began as a university student. Armed with a fresh encounter with God, I set out on my destiny. In fraternity with a few other like-minded men, I captured the vision of giving away what I had encountered. I had lived, primarily up to this occasion, for myself. However, I was on a new trek! It was all about loving others, helping, serving, and reaching people. The Great Commission became my great obsession. My pursuit was vigorous, yet over time, it left me drained of vigor! I found myself in a strange, uncharted place within. I grasped for new vitality in my God-life. I found and apprehended a new handle in my life. It was a new corridor! I found new energy in the quest of seeking after God and loving God. I became a God chaser. I saw the priority of being a God seeker rather than a people seeker. The flames of my God-life were fanned! After several years of traveling this route, to my amazement, my flame began to burn out. The battery of my emotions and will were drained in a way I had experienced before. I wilted in the race of running with the Great Commission. I became heavy, carrying the weight of being a God chaser. Why was my soul gas tank low? Weren't these honorable pursuits? I had loved myself, others, and then God. How, then, shall I go forward with my God-life? Let's relook at the road map and recalibrate the compass. Come...take a journey with me!
