Hunting the Sun upends all previous Faulkner biography, scholarship, and criticism by tracing to Honoré de Balzac virtually everything in William Faulkner's oeuvre. Faulkner's work departs, often confusingly, from the traditional Romantic focus of novels. The reason for the confusion is that Faulkner was rewriting Balzac's La Comedie humaine, itself a prose revision of Dante's Divine Comedy, in order to create his own comedy. More specifically, Faulkner abandons the metaphysical basis of the earlier works and replaces them with a psychosexual one; for example, Balzac's «The Succubus» becomes Faulkner's «Carcassonne», which the American renders an erotic fantasy. Virtually all of Faulkner's major works, and many of the lesser ones, have direct sources in Balzac's work.

How did Chicago, a city known for commerce, come to have such a splendid public waterfront—its most treasured asset? Lakefront reveals a story of social, political, and legal conflict in which private and public rights have clashed repeatedly over time, only to produce, as a kind of miracle, a generally happy ending. Joseph D. Kearney and Thomas W. Merrill study the lakefront's evolution from the middle of the nineteenth century to the twenty-first. Their findings have significance for understanding not only Chicago's history but also the law's part in determining the future of significant urban resources such as waterfronts. The Chicago lakefront is where the American public trust doctrine, holding certain public resources off limits to private development, was born. This book describes the circumstances that gave rise to the doctrine and its fluctuating importance over time, and reveals how it was resurrected in the later twentieth century to become the primary principle for mediating clashes between public and private lakefront rights. Lakefront compares the effectiveness of the public trust idea to other property doctrines, and assesses the role of the law as compared with more institutional developments, such as the emergence of sanitary commissions and park districts, in securing the protection of the lakefront for public uses. By charting its history, Kearney and Merrill demonstrate that the lakefront's current status is in part a product of individuals and events unique to Chicago. But technological changes, and a transformation in social values in favor of recreational and preservationist uses, also have been critical. Throughout, the law, while also in a state of continual change, has played at least a supporting role.

The Great Platte River Road through Nebraska and Wyoming was the grand corridor of America's westward expansion. A number of famous trails converged in the broad valley of the Platte, forming a kind of primitive superhighway for the great covered wagon migration from 1841 to 1866. From jumping-off places along the Missouri River?notably the Omaha-Council Bluffs, St. Joseph, and Kansas City areas?the emigrant throngs came together at Fort Kearny, Nebraska. Although they continued on to South Pass, Wyoming, and beyond, this book focuses on the feeder mutes and the more than three hundred miles between Fort Kearny and Fort Laramie. The Great Platte River Road looks at border towns, trail routes, river crossings, stage stations, military posts, and such landmarks as Chimney Rock and Scott's Bluff. It goes far beyond geography and Indian encounters in revealing cultural aspects of the great migration: food, dress, equipment, organization, camping, traffic patterns, sex ratios, morals, manners, religion, crime, accidents, disease, death, and burial customs.

Toby Ryker, a colorful old man similiar to J.B. Books in Swarthout's classic, "The Shootist," is forced to come to grips with his mortality. He moseys into Laramie and stirs up a saloon brawl just for the fun of it then pays for the damages, thus bailing everyone out of a passle of trouble. Moments later, he collapses of a heart attack. When he wakes up, the doctor directs him to adopt a quiet way of life. He looks up an old friend, David Stewart, a rancher living in the area who is now married with a family, and the two decide to go on a last hunting trip in the Medicine Bow Mountains. Ryker learns that McQuiston, a sadistic bounty hunter, has trailed him to Laramie over a shooting he committed in Deadwood. McQuiston kills a local cowboy soon after his arrival and the chase is on, with Ryker and Stewart hunting elk, McQuiston hunting Ryker, and the sheriff hunting McQuiston. The final shootout leaves McQuiston dead, but with a story ending that is not what it appears to be. A perfect holiday gift idea!

This is Pete Merrill's second book about bears. The first, Ralph, Conversations with a Bear, describes his meeting in the woods near his home with curmudgeonly old Ralph Shakesbear and his young grandson Macduff. Their relationship was usually contentious -- Ralph considers Homo sapiens an inferior lot. "Human beans," as he calls them, "are a dysfunctional species who are forever shooting themselves in the foot." Pete and Ralph managed to maintain tolerable relations until the pressures of encroaching civilization became intolerable. Pete agreed to help relocate Ralph and Duffy to Olympic National Park where Ralph thought they could "live in peace" as every bear has a right to, away from the corrupting influence of the "beans". In Council of Bears we find the aging Ralph, now Alpha bear, elder statesman and self-appointed ursine major domo, attempting to organize all the bears in the south end of the park. His authority apparently does not extend to his irrepressible adolescent grandson, Macduff who much prefers driving the park rangers crazy and keeping campers on constant alert. Macduff considers that he is doing the campers a favor -- providing them with wilderness adventures they can "tell their grandchildren about".
