This book is about the world we lived in which was one of dreams, spirituality, magic, and love. I arrived just at the end of the Pisces Age in 1950, and I could feel the energies changing early in my life. The Sages had spoken to the families about the coming cultural change which would take the world by storm. We had no idea what they meant, but we knew it would happen. I was just going about my life learning all the ancient African knowledge and wisdom my family taught. After all, this is the spirituality and ancestral knowledge which freed the slaves from bondage. We were a very blessed family in that there was never any lack, just a life of abundance. The Sages controlled what happened in this world and no one ever questioned them. Our world was filled with happiness, excitement, and surprise. Then, as though my world was not already filled with many unusual things, in the early 1960's, it happened. The change of which the Sages had been speaking, started to happen. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement came to our little town of Americus, GA. This was the very beginning of what turned out to be the biggest event, ever. My father was a successful independent business leader and he and Rev. King (as Dr. King was known at that time) bonded immediately. This meant that our entire family was heavily involved in the "Movement". Dr. King was frequently at our home and became a part of the family for many years. Everything changed for me and the family when this Movement came but the Sages managed to keep control over our daily lives. These were some powerful Black women whom no one dared cross. The energy which drove the Movement was constantly pointed out to me by the Sages. I became an expert on the human energy phenomenon. The world was completely magical and it seemed to have come to our small town. The people we met were from all over the globe. The power of the black people's energy was working full force. Because of what the Sages taught me, I was able to travel through my entire life in control of my "elements". The Sages believed, practiced, and taught that if you can control your elements, you can control your life. This book is about these Black powerful women who had taken their gifts and skills underground, until now.

The Darkness Beyond the Stage-lit Dream

This book is an analysis of the textual representation of dance in the Australian novel since the late 1890s. It examines how the act of dance is variously portrayed, how the word 'dance' is used metaphorically to convey actual or imagined movement, and how dance is written in a novelistic form. The author employs a wide range of theoretical approaches including postcolonial studies, theories concerned with class, gender, metaphor and dance and, in particular, Jung's concept of the shadow and theories concerned with vision. Through these variegated approaches, the study critiques the common view that dance is an expression of joie de vivre, liberation, transcendence, order and beauty. This text also probes issues concerned with the enactment of dance in Australia and abroad, and contributes to an understanding of how dance is 'translated' into literature. It makes an important contribution because the study of dance in Australian literature has been minimal, and this despite the reality that dance is prolific in Australian novels.

A Band of Noble Women brings together the histories of the women’s peace movement and the black women’s club and social reform movement in a story of community and consciousness building between the world wars. Believing that achievement of improved race relations was a central step in establishing world peace, African American and white women initiated new political alliances that challenged the practices of Jim Crow segregation and promoted the leadership of women in transnational politics. Under the auspices of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), they united the artistic agenda of the Harlem Renaissance, suffrage-era organizing tactics, and contemporary debates on race in their efforts to expand women’s influence on the politics of war and peace. Plastas shows how WILPF espoused middle-class values and employed gendered forms of organization building, educating thousands of people on issues ranging from U.S. policies in Haiti and Liberia to the need for global disarmament. Highlighting WILPF chapters in Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Baltimore, the author examines the successes of this interracial movement as well as its failures. A Band of Noble Women enables us to examine more fully the history of race in U.S. women’s movements and illuminates the role of the women’s peace movement in setting the foundation for the civil rights movement.

The question of how to best prepare nurses for practice continues to be debated extensively. The crux of the debate is whether a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) should be required of all registered nurses in the United States or whether an associate degree in nursing (ADN) and diploma programs adequately prepare novice nurses for practice. Most of the literature on the relative effectiveness of BSN and ADN programs is inconclusive or dated. Most relevant studies focus on one type of program and do not directly compare how BSN and ADN graduates perform on the job. The findings of the few studies that do compare outcomes of BSN and ADN programs are mixed. What the literature does suggest is that the differences between ADN and BSN programs may not greatly affect nurses' ability to perform basic nursing tasks and that both programs prepare registered nurses for entry-level positions in most health care settings. The following lessons for those involved in planning and delivering nursing education were identified from the literature: (1) move carefully and work together; (2) conduct further research and use it; (3) create clearer career ladders; (4) differentiate between novice and advanced practice; and (5) ease movement between the ADN and BSN.
