Human emotional suffering has been studied for centuries, but the significance of psychological injuries within legal contexts has only recently been recognized. As the public becomes increasingly aware of the ways in which mental health affects physical - and financial - well-being, psychological injuries comprise a rapidly growing set of personal injury insurance claims. Although the diverse range of problems that people claim to suffer from are serious and often genuine, the largely subjective and unobservable nature of psychological conditions has led to much skepticism about the authenticity of psychological injury claims. Improved assessment methods and research on the economic and physical health consequences of psychological distress has resulted in exponential growth in the litigation related to such conditions. Integrating the history of psychological injuries both from legal and mental health perspectives, this book offers compelling discussions of relevant statutory and case law. Focussing especially on posttraumatic stress disorder, it addresses the current status and empirical limitations of forensic assessments of psychological injuries and alerts readers to common vulnerabilities in expert evidence from mental health professionals. In addition, it also uses the latest empirical research to provide the best forensic methods for assessing both clinical conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder and for alternative explanations such as malingering. The authors offer state-of-the-art information on early intervention, psychological therapies, and pharmaceutical treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder and stimulating suggestions for further research into this complex phenomenon. A comprehensive guide to psychological injuries, this book will be an indispensable resource for all mental health practitioners, researchers, and legal professionals who work with psychological injuries.
The Creative Tourist offers novelty in this field in that it discusses the creative tourism experience through a relational eudaimonic perspective, thus extending current knowledge and bringing fresh insights from new materialist philosophy into creative tourism research.
For readers seeking scientifically proven methods for permanent weight loss that enable them to still have fun and enjoy their lives, this accessible, entertaining, and humorous book provides valuable insights and ideas. Laugh Yourself Thin: Making Happiness, Fun, and Pleasure the Keys to Permanent Weight Loss argues a unique thesis. Laughter, its physician author proclaims, is the key to losing weight. Losing weight, she goes on to say, will not necessarily lead to happiness, but happiness does lead to weight loss. Offering an approach to weight loss that is grounded in sound medical research, her book shows readers how increasing joy and fun decreases stress and negative emotions—resulting in permanent thinness. Laugh Yourself Thin covers the entire spectrum of weight loss, but pays closest attention to positive attitude and behavior in activity and eating. The first section discusses the relationship of thought and behavior to weight loss, the second deals with the intake of calories, and the third details issues in metabolism and activity. Enriched with healthy doses of funny, true stories, this revolutionary book proves that, when it comes to getting thin, laughter is the best medicine.

The various chapters discuss processes of identification and modification of triggers of hot flushes and offers tips to women on dealing with hot flushes in social and work situations. The guide can be as effective as eight hours of group CBT and will help women who want to try a non-medical treatment that is brief and effective without side effects, or just want to be better informed.
Combining a rigorous and academic theoretical framework with practical case studies and real-life examples, initiatives and projects from both the developed and developing world, this wide-ranging yet detailed book examines the phenomenon of cultural tourism in its broadest sense. It explores many issues including, amongst others: the development of cultural tourism and its impacts sustainable cultural tourism policies the role of cultural tourism in urban regeneration the organizational framework of European cultural tourism. In addition, individual chapters make reference to the problems of exclusion and discrimination. Drawing on post-modern perspectives, this informative text emphasizes the importance of popular cultural tourism, alternative or ethnic tourism, and that of working class heritage and culture. It focuses on the role cultural tourism plays in the globalization process and the impacts of global development on culture, traditions and identity, especially for regional, ethnic and minority groups. It argues that the future development and management of cultural tourism relies on a greater degree of mutual understanding between the sectors involved in its development, and on further communication, if it is to be sustainable, integrative and democratic.
This book explores learning outcomes for low-income rural and township youth at five South African universities. The book is framed as a contribution to southern and Africa-centred scholarship, adapting Amartya Sen's capability approach and a framework of key concepts: capabilities, functionings, context, conversion factors, poverty and agency to investigate opportunities and obstacles to achieved student outcomes. This approach allows a reimagining of 'inclusive learning outcomes' to encompass the multi-dimensional value of a university education and a plurality of valued cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes for students from low-income backgrounds whose experiences are strongly shaped by hardship. Based on capability theorising and student voices, the book proposes for policy and practice a set of contextual higher education capability domains and corresponding functionings orientated to more justice and more equality for each person to have the opportunities to be and to do what they have reason to value. The book concludes that sufficient material resources are necessary to get into university and flourish while there; the benefits of a university education should be rich and multi-dimensional so that they can result in functionings in all areas of life as well as work and future study; the inequalities and exclusion of the labour market and pathways to further study must be addressed by wider economic and social policies for 'inclusive learning outcomes' to be meaningful; and that universities ought to be doing more to enable black working-class students to participate and succeed. Low-Income Students, Human Development and Higher Education in South Africa makes an original contribution to capabilitarian scholarship: conceptually in theorising a South-based multi-dimensional student well-being higher education matrix and a rich reconceptualisation of learning outcomes, as well as empirically by conducting rigorous, longitudinal in-depth mixed-methods research on students' lives and experiences in higher education in South Africa. The audience for the book includes higher education researchers, international capabilitarian scholars, practitioners and policy-makers.
This book utilized a mixed-methods research study of the career experiences of theatre graduates in the U.S. to provide data on employment patterns and job satisfaction. With a population of over 1,000 participants, this study examined where graduates were working, how their careers had changed over time, which skills acquired with their theatre degree were being used in current employment, and whether they believed their course of study was worth the financial investment, given their current circumstances. Evidence from this study revealed that a theatre degree provided many of the skills the employment market is currently seeking and that theatre graduates were gainfully employed in multiple sectors of the economy. This important data-based, field-specific information will aid chairs, deans, provosts, politicians, students and parents in deicision-making at a time when arts and humanities departments across the country are under the threat of elimination.
Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: The linguistic status of Scots today is certainly best described as ambiguous. Scots is unique because it has a clearly defined history of its own and it has always possessed enough distinctive features to be very different from Standard English. Of all the varieties of English which have developed within the British Isles, there is none that created such controversy and still challenges even the best scholars. This paper tries to find out about the possibility of labelling Scots a language or a dialect. In addition to that, it takes a closer look at the linguistic features of Middle Scots and the situation of Scots today. Includes comprehensive sources for further reading and research.
