As more and more fans rush online to share their thoughts on their favorite shows or video games, they might feel like the process of providing feedback is empowering. However, as fan studies scholar Mel Stanfill argues, these industry invitations for fan participation indicate not greater fan power but rather greater fan usefulness. Stanfill’s argument, controversial to some in the field, compares the “domestication of fandom” to the domestication of livestock, contending that, just as livestock are bred bigger and more docile as they are domesticated, so, too, are fans as the entertainment industry seeks to cultivate a fan base that is both more useful and more controllable. By bringing industry studies and fan studies into the conversation, Stanfill looks closely at just who exactly the industry considers “proper fans” in terms of race, gender, age, and sexuality, and interrogates how digital media have influenced consumption, ultimately finding that the invitation to participate is really an incitement to consume in circumscribed, industry-useful ways.

By offering an historical re-appraisal of the Irish Free State’s politics, anchored in the wider context of inter-war Europe, Mel Farrell argues that the Irish party system is not unique in having two dominant parties capable of adapting to changing circumstances, and suggests that this has been a key strength of Irish democracy. MURPHY is a robot-camera system developed to explore an approach to the kinematics of sensory-motor learning and control for a multi-link arm. Organized into eight chapters, this book describes the guiding of a multi-link arm to visual targets in a cluttered workspace. It primarily focuses on "ecological solutions that are relevant to the typical visually guided reaching behaviors of humans and animals in natural environments. Algorithms that work well in unmodeled workspaces whose effective layouts can change from moment to moment with movements of the eyes, head, limbs, and body are also presented. This book also examines the strengths of neurally inspired connectionist representations and the utility of heuristic search when good performance, even if suboptimal, is adequate for the task. The co-evolution of MURPHY's design with the brain, presumably in response to similar computational pressures, is described in the concluding chapters, specifically presenting the division of labor between programmed-feedforward and visual-feedback modes of limb control. Something More Permanent A story of friendship, devotion and betrayal. Carol and Pamela in their late forties, married and post child rearing are dear friends and at times near to expressing their affection physically. Both having been faithful wives, they share their sexual fantasies and eventually begin extra-marital relationships. Around the same time Carol’s husband Gus also begins an affair. He had been on a two-year hiatus from years of infidelity. These are nice people doing naughty things. Self-absorption does not stop Carol and Pamela from being good parents and dedicated volunteers for a mentoring organization and does not stop Gus from being a supportive husband and parent. By chance he becomes involved in the rescue of an endangered fourteen-year boy, thus becoming involved with his family. This begins to broaden Gus’s interests and circle of concern, and he begins to face things that had been suppressed. Against a backdrop of children advocacy, child endangerment, domestic violence and thought-provoking issues, Carol and Gus attempt to deal with their infidelity and other attachments. There are twists and surprises. Questions are answered, and others are raised, one being, why do two people who respect, admire and continue to be attracted to each other look elsewhere?
