Their families, during the decline of the Ottoman Empire were both migrated to the places near Istanbul, being close to the capital of the empire would give them feeling of security. As a result they were both born in Istanbul and years later met by incident in a small sea side village called Degirmendere.Selma, who was an orphan girl living with her brothers' family, was in a way rushed to get married in an effort to relieve her brother of the burden of supporting a large family. Kemal, who was the son of a well-known officer of the Ottoman Empire, was at the end expelled from the Military Academy in the most dishonorable way, and then had to live and survive by himself without the support of his father and the day he saw Selma, decided to marry her.Selma, after marrying Kemal, compared her life to a small piece of wood that was caught in the current of a fast-flowing river and was being uncontrollably carried along, whereas Kemal always run after the “bright light”, he always dreamed of catching.In short this story tells you about the Bear Dance which a Turkish couple had to do during their lives.
