On 8 December 1832, the convict transport ship 'Mangles' departed from Sheerness with its cargo of 236 convicts bound for New South Wales, none of whom knew what fate had in store for them. The ages of the men and boys spanned from just 13 years-old to 54, and between them they left behind 46 wives and 133 children. Their crimes ranged from horse stealing, to counterfeiting, burglary, mugging, or just stealing apples. They had been sent from all corners of the United Kingdom, and one was even from Guyana in South America. They came from all walks of life: labourers, sailors, tradesmen, soldiers, urchins and craftsmen; and included the educated and the uneducated. Some of them would go on to carve out new lives in Australia, with new families; others would never cease fighting the 'system'; two would be sent to the gallows, whilst another two would be murdered. Others would leave the colony, either at the end of their sentences or by escaping. This book sets out to tell the stories of how each of them ended up on the 'Mangles', and what happened to them after they arrived in New South Wales.
A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2019 From National Book Award finalist Megan K. Stack, a stunning memoir of raising her children abroad with the help of Chinese and Indian women who are also working mothers When Megan Stack was living in Beijing, she left her prestigious job as a foreign correspondent to have her first child and work from home writing a book. She quickly realized that caring for a baby and keeping up with the housework while her husband went to the office each day was consuming the time she needed to write. This dilemma was resolved in the manner of many upper-class families and large corporations: she availed herself of cheap Chinese labor. The housekeeper Stack hired was a migrant from the countryside, a mother who had left her daughter in a precarious situation to earn desperately needed cash in the capital. As Stack's family grew and her husband's job took them to Dehli, a series of Chinese and Indian women cooked, cleaned, and babysat in her home. Stack grew increasingly aware of the brutal realities of their lives: domestic abuse, alcoholism, unplanned pregnancies. Hiring poor women had given her the ability to work while raising her children, but what ethical compromise had she made? Determined to confront the truth, Stack traveled to her employees' homes, met their parents and children, and turned a journalistic eye on the tradeoffs they'd been forced to make as working mothers seeking upward mobility—and on the cost to the children who were left behind. Women's Work is an unforgettable story of four women as well as an electrifying meditation on the evasions of marriage, motherhood, feminism, and privilege.

Megan Amram, one of Forbes’ “30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment,” Rolling Stone’s “25 Funniest People on Twitter,” and a writer for NBC’s hit show Parks and Recreation, delivers a politically, scientifically, and anatomically incorrect “textbook” that will have women screaming with laughter, and men dying to know what the noise is about. In the vein of faux expert books by John Hodgman and Amy Sedaris, Science… For Her! is ostensibly a book of science written by a denizen of women’s magazines. Comedy writer and Twitter sensation Megan Amram showcases her fiendish wit with a pitch-perfect attack on everything from those insanely perky tips for self-improvement to our bizarre shopaholic dating culture to the socially mandated pursuit of mind-blowing sex to the cringe-worthy secret codes of food and body issues. Part hilarious farce, part biting gender commentary, Amram blends Cosmo and science to highlight absurdities with a machine-gun of laugh-inducing lines that leave nothing and no one unscathed. Subjects include: this Spring’s ten most glamorous ways to die; tips for hosting your own big bang; what religion is right for your body type; and the most pressing issue facing women today: kale!!! Be prepared to laugh about anything in this outrageous satirical gem.

The Pause Effect explores the impact of capturing moments often left unnoticed to intentionally pause to align to our brand and values while establishing our own belonging to serve others. Megan Broker’s debut book equips us to learn in real-time by sharing her leadership journey through the lens of one of life’s most charged and complicated mergers: blending families. Blended families are like highly matrixed organizations lacking clear roles and reporting structures with competing cultures. The Pause Effect delves deep into the unexplored dimension of the personal journey of establishing a profound sense of belonging and aligning one’s values to create a powerful brand. Drawing on years of experience, research, real-world examples, and personal anecdotes, Megan presents a perspective that challenges conventional leadership paradigms. In today’s dynamic and diverse world, the traditional notions of leadership have evolved. No longer is leadership merely about authority and influence. It’s about fostering genuine connections, harnessing individual strengths, and driving collective growth. The Pause Effect advocates for present and future leaders to begin their journey from within; to unearth their own sense of belonging, clarify their values, and align their actions with their unique leadership brand. Through a series of easily actionable practices, this book will be one to pick up again and again to continue to revisit and refine your intentional presence. Leaders of all levels and capabilities are then able to lead themselves and others, finding both their sense of connection and driving it for, instead of at the expense of, others.
