Mechthild of Magdeburg's The Flowing Light of the Godhead is one of the great surprises of German medieval literature. Compiled between c.1250 and c.1282, it is an extraordinary piece of imaginative writing. It integrates visions, auditions, dialogues, prayers, hymns, lyrical love poems, letters, allegories and parables, and draws creatively on features from hagiography, the disputation, the treatise, and magic spells, as the author documents her relationship with God and with her contemporaries. Within the context of German literary history, it is the first text in the tradition of mystical writing that was neither a translation nor a free adaptation of a Latin text, but rather an independent composition in the vernacular. Also of major significance is the fact that this text was written by a woman, thus offering insights into the cultural and social-historical context of the female religious (Mechthild lived her adult life as a beguine and latterly as a nun) in thirteenth-century northern Europe. Selections from the text are presented here in translation with introduction and notes. Dr Elizabeth A. Andersen teaches in the School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University.

While society may applaud middle and upper class women who decide to stay home to raise their children, there exists a decided abhorrence for single mothers, welfare queens, who collect public funds but do not work. Here, Hart challenges traditional notions of welfare mothers by providing first-hand accounts of poor urban mothers and revealing the life-affirming and moral aspects of their motherwork--a form of subsistence work, involving many tasks that incorporate the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of life. Though the mothering work these women do is vilified in public discourse as unnecessary and unwanted, the author contends that the ethical and epistemological dimensions of life-affirming work--a key component of motherwork--not only structure social-political activism but also educational efforts that are oriented towards radical change. Concrete experiences of motherwork, policy analyses regarding welfare reform, efforts oriented towards educational and epistemological border-crossings, and collective struggles for social change are examined here in a larger theoretical, political-economic framework. Pulling together the many strands of different theoretical fields addressing issues related to critical/transformative pedagogy, community activism, and forms of unpaid work, this unique work calls for the unlearning of ways of thinking and feeling which uphold prejudices and life-threatening social-political hierarchies. While the public may sneer at women who choose to accept welfare in order to stay home to raise their children, these mothers must continue to perform this invisible work in order that their children may break the cycle of poverty in which they are entrenched. The author examines ways in which these mothers organize and carry out educational efforts and political work in the context of extreme poverty and against the harsh criticisms of an unforgiving public. Ultimately, Hart hopes to convince the public of the inherent importance of motherwork and break down the prejudices that have worked against the urban poor and single mothers.

The cult of saints was one of the most important aspects of life in the Middle Ages, and it often formed the nucleus of developing group identities in a town, a province or a country. The literature of Anglo-Saxon England is unique among contemporary European literatures in that it features a vast amount of saints' Lives in the vernacular. Of these Lives, Ælfric is the most important author, and his saints' Lives have never previously been explored in their contemporary setting. In this study, Gretsch analyses Ælfric's Lives of five important saints in the light of their cults in Anglo-Saxon England. This gives the reader fascinating glimpses of 'Ælfric at work': he adapts the cults and rewrites the received Latin hagiography of the five saints, with the result that each of their English Lives conveys a distinct message to the contemporary political elite and to a lay audience at large.

Fleshing out surfaces is the first English-language book on skin and flesh tones in art. It considers flesh and skin in art theory, image making and medical discourse in seventeenth to nineteenth-century France. Describing a gradual shift between the early modern and the modern period, it argues that what artists made when imitating human nakedness was not always the same. Initially understood in terms of the body's substance, of flesh tones and body colour, it became increasingly a matter of skin, skin colour and surfaces. Each chapter is dedicated to a different notion of skin and its colour, from flesh tones via a membrane imbued with nervous energy to hermetic borderline. Looking in particular at works by Fragonard, David, Girodet, Benoist and Ingres, the focus is on portraits, as facial skin is a special arena for testing painterly skills and a site where the body and the image become equally expressive.

The problem of designing a cost-efficient network that survives the failure of one or more nodes or edges of the network is critical to modern telecommunications engineering. The method developed in this book is designed to solve such problems to optimality. In particular, a cutting plane approach is described, based on polyhedral combinatorics, that is ableto solve real-world problems of this type in short computation time. These results are of interest for practitioners in the area of communication network design. The European Parliament (EP) – a powerful actor in today's European Union – was not intended to be more than a consultative assembly at first. Yet this book shows that the EP was much more influential in shaping Community policy in the early years of the integration process than either the founding Treaties or most existing scholarship would allow. It studies the EP’s institutional evolution through the lens of Community social policy, a policy area with a particularly strong ideational dimension. By promoting a European social dimension, Members of the EP (MEPs) presented the Parliament as the true representative of European citizens by channelling their interests and needs. MEPs thus emphasised the EP’s role as a provider of democratic legitimacy for Community politics, whilst at the same time trying to convince European citizens that the Communities could have a real and positive impact on their everyday lives.

Dies birgt zugleich eine enorme Relevanz und Brisanz für den Einzelnen und seine Selbstverantwortung, denn spätestens wenn er Kenntnis davon gewonnen hat, was nach diesem Prinzip folgend alles in seiner Macht steht, trägt er auch die Verantwortung dafür. Daher empfehle ich an dieser Stelle ganz bewusst zu entscheiden, ob Sie weiterlesen wollen oder nicht. Bei der Entscheidung sollten Sie davon ausgehen, dass Sie die Anwendung dieser Denkweise zugleich mit neuer ungewohnter Energie ausstatten und in die Eigenverantwortung bringen kann. Unterrichtsentwurf aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Englisch - Pädagogik, Didaktik, Sprachwissenschaft, Note: 1.5, Veranstaltung: Referendariat, 3 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Thema dieser Stunde lautet English Money and Buying Things. Die Schüler lernen in dieser Stunde die britische Währung und den Ablauf eines kurzen Einkaufsgespräches kennen. Unmittelbar vor der hier behandelten Stunde sind die Schüler im Verlauf der vierten Lektion des Lehrbuches bereits mit einem Teil des für diese Lektion benötigten Vokabulars bzw. den benötigten Redewendungen vertraut gemacht worden. In der vierten Lektion geht es um Dialogsituationen zum Thema Birthday Party. Das Vocabsheet zum Thema Looking for a birthday present präsentiert unter anderem die Redewendungen May I help you? und What about a calendar then? - How much is it? - It's 1.45. Das Pound-Symbol und dessen Schreibung sind den Schülern bereits bekannt (Tafelanschrieb). Außerdem kennen die Schüler die Ausdrücke This is too expensive und that's (too) cheap. Aufbauend auf diesem Grundwissen habe ich mich dem Lehrbuch folgend - das Thema Money, money, money befindet sich im Anhang zur Unit 4 als TOPIC - für die Einführung der britischen Währung anhand des Lesens und Schreibens von Preisen entschieden. Die Einübung eines kurzen Verkaufsdialoges festigt darüber hinaus das neue Vokabular und die Redewendungen, die für einen Verkaufsdialog typisch sind. Um der Gruppe den Einstieg zu erleichtern, habe ich in der unmittelbar vorangegangenen Stunde noch einmal einen Dialog anfertigen und spielen lassen. Ausserdem erhielten die Schüler die Aufgabe das englische Geld aus dem Workbook auszuschneiden und als Übungsmaterial für die heutige Stunde mitzubringen. In der darauf folgenden Stunde werden abschließend die Ergebnisse der Hausaufgabe aus dem Workbook verglichen (TOPIC 4 zum Thema Money).
