This book explores the process of shipbreaking in developing countries, with a particular focus on Bangladesh. In the past, shipbreaking (the disposal of obsolete ships) was a very common industrial activity in many developed countries. However, due to stringent domestic environmental and labour laws it is almost impossible for the increasing number of vessels to be disposed of domestically, and now developing nations including Bangladesh, China, India, Turkey and Pakistan regularly participate in this activity. The shipbreaking yards in these countries are not only detrimental to the marine and coastal environment but also represent significant health hazards to local people and workers. Given the global importance of the issue, an effective legal and institutional framework for a sustainable operation of the shipbreaking industry is desperately needed. Sitting at the intersection of three distinct fields – environmental justice, international environmental law and international maritime law – this book offers an innovative take on the issues surrounding the shipbreaking process. Drawing on the case study of Bangladesh due to its prominence in the shipbreaking industry, the author implements an environmental justice framework to examine the issues of sustainability surrounding shipbreaking, and analyses the relationship between social development, economic development and environmental protection. Maritime perspectives of environmental justice will also be highlighted through a discussion of the International Maritime Organization’s role in the implementation of the Hong Kong Convention in developing countries. A brand is a valuable asset, and loyalty to a particular brand is the source of revenue and profitability of the business. Brand loyalty is significant for the business growth and expansion of companies in the electronics sector. A populated country, Bangladesh has a substantial expenditure on electronic appliances, and the demand for these household items increases over the period; however, customers are not always loyal to a particular brand. Marketing literature shows that customer satisfaction and brand confidence directly affect brand loyalty, and brand trust mediates their relationship. Due to the technological advance of social media, technology has an essential role in the customer's decision to buy household appliances. The existing literature has not focused on this massive demand for electronic appliances, customer satisfaction, loyalty, trust, and social media's significant role in consumer buying behavior. The book shoed the investigation of the effect of customer satisfaction and brand trust of electronic home appliances on brand loyalty and the mediating role of brand trust in customer satisfaction and trust relationship. The study also examined the extent to which customers believe social media information influences them. The study gathered data from 523 Bangladeshi respondents from Dhaka by conducting a survey. The data were analyzed with SPSS and CB-SEM (AMOS) for the hypothesis test. The findings revealed that customer satisfaction and brand trust significantly impact brand loyalty, and social media moderates those significant relationships. The result of the study contributed to the expectancy-disconfirmation theory, trust-commitment theory, brand loyalty theory, and theory of reasoned action by presenting empirically-based insight into customer satisfaction, brand trust, and brand loyalty constructs in electronic home appliances in Bangladesh. In addition, the results provided a practical insight into marketing and brand management. They suggested the practicing managers in developing product quality with customer preference, building trust through maintaining brand image and creating awareness among the customers, and considering the significance of social media and its usage. The research used probabilistic sampling techniques, both rural and urban customers, only a single home appliance, and PLS-SEM statistical tool for analysis. Future researchers could focus and include other variables such as price or advertising; consider loyalty separately, and use both urban and rural customers to have better predictions.
This book explores the relationship between climate change–induced migration and conflict in Bangladesh – one of the most ecologically fragile countries in the world. It explores why people migrate from their original place of land and how the migration of people with a different background to an ethnically distinctive region due to environmental changes can become a source of conflict and violence between the host peoples and migrants. The volume focuses on the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), which has experienced long-standing ethnopolitical conflict due to the settlement and migration of the Bengali people from the plain land of Bangladesh. This settlement and migration were mainly caused climatic events such as floods, cyclones, sealevel rise, and disasters. It traces the history of the ethnic conflict in the region and presents key findings from the field, as well as the dynamics of everyday politics in the region. This volume also highlights how internally climate-displaced people generate violence and civil strife in the major urban cities through their settlements in slums. While enduring his research aptitude, he has authored and co-authored more than 400 scientific papers, 2 books, and 12 book chapters of high repute. Dr. Saurabh Bhatia graduated from Kurukshetra University, followed by postgraduation from Bharati Vidyapeeth University. He received his Ph.D in Pharmaceutical Technology at Jadavpur University. He now works as an Associate Professor at Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center, University of Nizwa, Oman. He has 12 years of academic experience; has authored 75 articles and 9 books of repute; and filed 11 patents.
Today, the effect of global climate change is clear to all. It is clearly dangerous in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The industrial revolution caused major changes in technology, socio-economy and cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century, beginning in Britain and spreading throughout the world. The technology dominated economy was mostly dependent on energy produced from fossil fuel, which still holds true today. It is well known that fossil fuel burning has increased the GHGs to the atmosphere, thus creating global warming. Among the GHGs, the concentration of CO2 has been confirmed as the largest. Terrestrial ecosystems are clearly influencing the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are constantly entering and leaving the atmosphere. Actively growing trees and other plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water through photosynthesis and create sugars and more stable carbohydrates. Through this process, trees capture and store atmospheric CO2 in vegetation, soils and biomass products. The Kyoto Protocol, in 1997, explored a flexible mechanism, CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) where Annex I and non-Annex I parties interact for climate change mitigation. Forestry activities have been considered important in the arena of climate change as they act both as a sink and sources of carbon. The purpose of this book is to highlight the means of efficiently reducing global warming through forestry options in Bangladesh and the positive implications of CDM.
