Mischief, Miracles, Motherhood, and Menopause shares the stories of where author Julie B.s life has taken her and what she has learned from each experience. Dubbing herself The Maverick Messenger, she is a therapist, artist, singer-songwriter, author, wife, mother, and recovering alcoholic. She tells humorous and touching tales of being the baby of her family, dealing with the realities of flat-chestedness, surviving the pregnancy and birth of twins, and dating again after a divorce. She offers her take on being an overwhelmed mother of three teenagers while mired in the hormonal hell of menopause. Julie also candidly shares painful and heartfelt stories about her rape at age twelve, her experiences with drinking through the ten years that covered her twenties, and her journey through recovery and divorceas well as two miscarriages, a house-fire, three hurricanes, and her fathers death. Although each experience was devastating in its own right, as a whole they have given her a down-to-earth perspective on love, faith, and relationships. She hopes to inspire others to reevaluate their own lives and relationships with an open mind and heart. Her light-hearted, humorous perspective on a variety of subjects from adolescence to alcoholism will keep you laughing and crying at the same time.
Those of us blessed with a comfortable life are definitely a minority compared to those who are not. Not by the number maybe, but by the sheer scale of misery the unfortunate lot go through for absolutely no fault of theirs. Children suffering physical and sexual abuse at the hands of adults who are supposed to protect them, young adolescents succumbing to bullying by their peers, the poor and less privileged being exploited by the conscienceless affluent, young women getting trafficked into the flesh trade by the mindless pimpgangs... and the list goes on. DREAD stalks these hapless souls and drives them through extremely frightening dark alleys... forcing them fight it out all by themselves with no help in sight, till they sight the end of their very lives. The Hope Mafia turns the table on this rather stark, dreary scenario by unleashing a positive energy that eclipses the depressive reality with a far more violent offensive. And the plot bolsters itself on this creative premise: Because the agents of The Hope Mafia are up for a formidable task, they are coded with an altruistic DNA and endowed with some special powers to accomplish their mission.

Old Villita is reissued by Wings Press in celebration of the Tricentennial of the founding of San Antonio, Texas on May 5, 1718. It was originally published in 1939 by the City of San Antonio as part of the American Guide Series (Federal Writers Project, under the Work Projects Administration). It was overseen and edited by the mayor of San Antonio, Maury Maverick, Sr. Earlier in the 1930s, U.S. Congressman Maverick had worked closely with his friend, President Roosevelt, to implement FDR's New Deal policies. His 1937 autobiography, A Maverick American, was something of a Depression-era bestseller. Among the many progressive acts in his life — which included securing W.P.A. funds for the initial development of the San Antonio Riverwalk — he was proudest of the restoration of La Villita, the 18th century settlement from which the city of San Antonio grew. Maverick's grand daughter, Lynn Maverick Denzer, wrote La Villita Continues, the story of the "Little Village" from its restoration to its present incarnation as La Villita Historic Arts Village. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, La Villita serves as a lively arts and cultural hub at the center of downtown San Antonio. Denzer's watercolors enliven the pages, along with historical photographs and documents.

Mary Maverick's memoirs are a Texas classic. They chronicle a strong, brave woman shepherding her family through tumultuous times on the raw Texas frontier. First settling in a rustic home in 1838 San Antonio with her husband, the legendary Samuel Maverick, the family was forced to flee invading Mexican forces during the famed Runaway Scrape. They settled again in Gonzales, but Sam was in San Antonio when Mexican General Woll captured the town, taking Sam prisoner and confining him in the notorious Perote Prison. After Sam was released, the Mavericks moved to the windswept Matagorda Peninsula-with Mary so sick on the journey that they laid boards in the wagon to make a bed-before returning to San Antonio two years later. Sam and Mary had ten children; four died before they reached the age of eight. During the Civil War, four of Mary's sons served in the Confederate Army. Though Sam had been in the center of the storm during the Texas Revolution, he was approaching 60 years of age when the Civil War broke out; he spent the war with Mary, serving as a judge and mayor of San Antonio. Notable characters pepper the narrative, including Alexander Somervell, Jack Hays, Dr. George Cupples, Deaf Smith, Cherokee Chief Bowles, Matilda Lockhart, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Mirabeau Lamar, Juan Seguin, and too many others to mention. This is not a typical frontier wife's memoir-it is a first-hand account of the founding of Texas.
