A foundational essay of class struggle published in English for the first time Considered one of the most important intellectuals in Latin American social thought, Ruy Mauro Marini demonstrated that underdevelopment and development are the result of relations between economies in the world market, and the class relations they engender. In The Dialectics of Dependency, the Brazilian sociologist and revolutionary showed that, as Latin America came to specialize in the production of raw materials and foodstuffs while importing manufactured goods, a process of unequal exchange took shape that created a transfer of value to the imperialist centers. This encouraged capitalists in the periphery to resort to the superexploitation of workers – harsh working conditions where wages fall below what is needed to reproduce their labor power. In this way, the economies of Latin America, which played a fundamental role in facilitating a new phase of the industrial revolution in western Europe, passed from the colonial condition only to be rendered economically “dependent,” or subordinated to imperialist economies. This unbalanced relationship, which nonetheless allows capitalists of both imperialist and dependent regions to profit, has been reproduced in successive international divisions of labor of world economy, and continues to inform the day-to-day life of Latin American workers and their struggles. Written during an upsurge of class struggle in the region in the 1970s, and published here in English for the first time, the revelations inscribed in this foundational essay are proving more relevant than ever. The Dialectics of Dependency is an internationalist contribution from one Latin American Marxist to dispossessed and oppressed people struggling the world over, and a gift to those who struggle from within the recesses of present-day imperialist centers—nourishing today’s efforts to think through the definition of “revolution” on a global scale.

The book focuses on the relationship between law and politics as perceived by the legal community and more specifically, the transformation of politics into law. After exploring the relationship between law and politics as considered by the major modern schools of legal theory, the focus moves to the regions of interaction in which law and politics meet, termed the "policy of law." The policy of law is characterized in this work as the stage of the law-making process at which values entrenched in political decisions are transformed into legal concepts in order to fit the existing legal system. The space labeled as policy of law is today mainly (but not exclusively) the domain of legal actors. Consequently, the identification of a branch of the legal discipline specifically devoted to the investigation of the transformations of values into law is given: the policy of law analysis. Finally, whether and to what extent the policy of law analysis can be encompassed within the traditional legal discipline and, more particularly, as a part of jurisprudence, is explored. The subject of Design Policies is slowly growing to be broadly discussed, although most of the time from within a design practitioners' and design enthusiasts' bubble. Public administration is gradually embracing design from another perspective - using Design Thinking to develop programmes and services. Lawmakers and government executives are still distant, frequently without a real knowledge of design and its potential. Governments (and designers as well) seem to be contented by design promotion actions or programmes, which are frequently wrongly accepted as a design policy. From this prospect, this book intends to be a contribution to the debate of Design Policies nourished by past experiences and reflections, but also from current practices - as in Europe and China, for example. The book was originally meant in hindsight of a document produced in the seventies by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, within the context of a partnership with the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, ICSID. This partnership resulted in a document discussing design as a driver of economic growth, prepared by Gui Bonsiepe in 1973, and then summarized by the UNIDO Secretariat in 1975 as the Basic guidelines for policy of industrial design in developing countries. Both documents were made available for this book by UNIDO, and are reproduced here as appendices. Although originally aimed at developing countries, after these four decades of unsettling growth of wicked problems, this theme deserves to be reviewed and discussed thoroughly. Design might play a very significant role when approaching contemporary problems such as rearranging urban spaces, urban mobility, tourism, immigration, housing, violence, and environment among others. These - not so new - wicked problems prompts to a whole new perspective on design and public design policies that goes beyond the original context here. The perspective of the "Third World" economy (as it was known at the time) might offer insights to understand and perhaps solve problems of any size economy - especially if we consider the aspects of local or regional problems. It is time to exercise empathy towards someone else's problems and to reflect under different scales and measures, and design seem to be the perfect instrument for it. Mugendi M'Rithaa, former President of ICSID (currently the WDO, World Design Organization) saluted the book as "the most important contribution on this field in the last ten years" (cited in the final remarks of his interview in the chapter Design in Africa: I participate, therefore I am). In Brazil the book was awarded twice - initially at the Objeto:Brasil International Design Award in May 2016, and then later at the same year at the MCB (Museum of the Brazilian Home) Design Awards of 2016. The jury of this later has acclaimed the book as "a theoretical and academic milestone, with potential to change the current practice and understanding of Design." After the successful launch in Portugal with conferences in three design schools in 2016, the book was selected in 2017 to the exhibition Brasil: Hoje at MUDE, Lisbon's Museum of Fashion and Design. The curator, Frederico Duarte, highlighted in the catalogue: "The first and indispensable book on design and development in the Portuguese language." In 2018 the book was selected in Spain to be part of BID, the Ibero-American Design Biennial, in Madrid. In the same year was published an e-book edition in Portuguese to make it more accessible, at the same time that this first English edition started being prepared.

A detailed analysis of representations of domestic workers in the telenovela Cheias de Charme and of news coverage of affirmative action by the magazine Veja demonstrates that they adopted whiteness as an ideological perspective, disseminating resentment among their audiences and fomenting the conservative revolt that took place in Brazil between 2013 and 2018.

It makes the argument that understanding education reform in post-colonial contexts requires that scholars go beyond a surface-level description of such trends as privatization to consider, in addition, the ways that the logics, practices, and relationships that characterized colonialism continue to be embedded in the apparatus of modern States. The first part of the volume documents historical trends and the evolution of privatisation in Honduras, while the second part explicitly engages in an extended discussion of State theory, before shifting to present a framework for depicting how these logics are the foundational layer upon which states and global governance have been constructed. The framework draws upon scholarship from political economy, world systems, and post-colonialism to depict the "ethos of privatization" at the core of post-colonial States, wherein what drives the system is private benefit, in the interest of individuals and their networks, but not in the interest of those outside the State. Applying this unique framework to the case of Honduras and offering empirical analysis of the Honduran education sector, the changing role and priorities of the State, and the increasing involvement of international organizations, NGOs, and private actors in the provision of education, the text increases understanding of how State theory interacts with broader global dynamics to impact education. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with a focus on international and comparative education, policy analysis, globalization, and international development.
