To what extent has the process of European integration re-drawn the boundaries of national welfare states? What are the effects of such re-drawing? Boundaries count: they are essential in bringing together individuals, groups, and territorial units, and for activating or strengthening shared ties between them. If the profile of boundaries changes over time, we might expect significant consequences on bonding dynamics, i.e. on the way solidarity is structured in a given politicalcommunity.The book addresses these two questions in a broad historical and comparative perspective. The first chapter sets out a novel theoretical framework which re-conceptualizes the welfare state as a 'bounded space' characterized by a distinct spatial politics. This reconceptualization takes as a starting point the 'state-building tradition' in political science and in particular the work of Stein Rokkan. The second chapter briefly outlines the early emergence and expansion of European welfare statestill World War II. Chapters 3 and 4 analyse the relationship between domestic welfare state developments and the formation of a supranational European Community between the 1960s and the 2000s, illustrating how the process of European integration has increasingly eroded the social sovereignty of thenation-state. Chapter 5 focuses on new emerging forms of sub-national and trans-national social protection, while Chapter 6 discusses current trends and future perspectives for a re-structuring of social protection at the EU level.While there is no doubt that European integration has significantly altered the boundaries of national welfare, de-stabilizing delicate political and institutional equilibria, the book concludes by offering some suggestions on how a viable system of multi-level social protection could possibly emerge within the new EU wide boundary configuration.

It argues that these émigrés' involvement in debates with British, continental, and American intellectuals, points to the emergence of liberalism and Romanticism as international ideologies shared by a community of patriots from Southern Europe as well as Latin America, and demonstrates that the Risorgimento first developed as a variation upon such global trends.

For many years the etiology of human tumors has almost exclusively been attributed to environmental factors, which seemed to be involved not only in the induction of neo plasms but also in other phases of tumorigenesis. Cigarette smoking and alcohol are the two best known examples of factors related to our modern lifestyle which have been implicated in the development of cancer of various organs. From the 1960s onward, the pioneer work of a few investigators clearly showed that hereditary factors were not only related to rare neoplasms, but could also be respon sible for the occurrence of a sizeable fraction of tumors that do not usually show features of inheritance (as in the case of breast or colorectal cancer). Thus, the idea that some common human malignancies could be transmitted from one generation to another with features of mendelian gene tics became more and more evident. In addition, the verit able explosion of molecular biology in the last 15 years has made a further and substantial contribution to the emerging role of genetics in biomedical research and particularly in cancer.

Linked Data principles have led to semantically interlink and connect different resourcesat data level regardless the structure, authoring, location etc. Data available on the Web using Linked Data has resulted in a global data space called the Web of Data. Moreover, thanks to the efforts of the scientific community and the W3C Linked Open Data (LOD) project, more and more data have been published on the Web of Data, helping its growth and evolution. This book studies Recommender Systems that use LInked Data as a source for generating recommendations exploiting the large amount of available resources and the relationships between them. Firts, a comprehensive state of the art is preseted in order to indetify and study frameworks and algorithms for RS that rely on Linked Data. Second a framework named AlLied taht makes available implementations of the most used algortihms for resource recommendation based on Linked Data is described. This framework is inteded to use and test the recommendation algorithms in various domains and contexts, and to analyze their behavior under different conditions. Accordingly the framework is suitable to compare the results of these algorithms both in performance and relevance, and to enable the development of innovative applications on top of it.
