Ever since Sir Richard, First Baronet Harfield, took up residence in his newly built mansion at Prinsted, over three hundred years ago, the Harfield family has maintained its pre-eminent position within the parish. But status and treasure are not all that the current Harfield generation inherited from their distinguished, yet reclusive, ancestor. Sir Richard also bequeathed them two mysteries: the source of his considerable wealth; and, the true identity of his much younger wife, the enigmatic Adeline. When the painting of a beautiful young woman, bearing the signature of Sir Godfrey Kneller, one of England's most famous seventeenth century portrait artists, is found hidden in the basement of the Harfield mansion, the Reverend Brazelle, a family friend, offers to try to identify the woman. He believes that, if successful, he might also be able to resolve those other Harfield family mysteries. It turns out that he's right, although the astonishing discovery that he makes carries such profound and far reaching implications, and not just for the Harfield family, that he struggles to see how it can ever be made public. But that isn't the only challenge Brazelle currently faces. He has also been drawn into helping unmask a traitor and solve a present day murder. And, by the way, he still has his duties as the Prinsted parish priest to perform and a portrait of his own to get finished.

A street robbery in Oxford ends with the fatal injury of the victim. Less than twenty four hours later, when the police investigation already appears to be on the verge of a successful conclusion, Superintendent Ifor Jenkins arrives from the Met with an unsolicited offer to assist with the case. The Senior Investigating Officer, DI Janet Kershaw, initially considers Jenkins' help to be unnecessary and even resents his presence. But, when subsequent events turn what she previously perceived to be a straightforward investigation into something far more complex, her attitude begins to change. It is obvious from the beginning that Jenkins knows rather more about the background to the case than he is prepared to disclose. And he is clearly able to call upon some well connected sources to help advance the investigation. However, after learning more about the robbery victim and encountering several unlikely coincidences, even he is forced to reconsider his initial assumptions. Eventually, unlikely though it may seem, there is only one possible conclusion to be drawn. The motivation for the street robbery has its roots in events that took place in a village in northern France, more than three hundred years ago; events with implications that have echoed through the generations all the way down to the present day.

Originally published in 2005. In Great Britain, the reduction of social exclusion has been at the forefront of New Labour's social policy since 1997. However, there is ambiguity about what the notion of social exclusion actually encompasses, caused in part by the limited extent of attempts to measure and understand social exclusion empirically. This key work addresses this problem, employing data from a nationally representative survey of British households to quantify levels of social exclusion and the composition of the socially excluded population. It also incorporates data from a European Commission-funded household survey to compare social exclusion in Great Britain with eleven other countries in the European Union. In the book, Matt Barnes argues that social exclusion refers to enduring disadvantage on a wide range of living standards, not just those that reflect economic values. As well as looking at standard measures of poverty he looks at more relational measures of disadvantage such as neighbourhood discontent and social isolation, in order to determine exclusion from the economic, social and cultural systems that determine the integration of a person in society.
