A young man with big ambitions asks himself, "How do I become a successful IT architect?" More specifically, "How can I stand out from all the other IT architects out there?" The answer lies in Berlin. Berlin lives and breathes IT. Every week, there are at least two IT events happening. The aspiring IT architect decides to dive into the world of IT events. Without a preference for any particular technology, he attends everything even remotely related to IT. No technology is off-limits, even though hes actually a Data Engineer at heart. By the end of his journey, he gets to know Berlin, the key IT events and locations, and the major players in the IT game. He gains experiences and builds knowledge that you won't find in any book or online course.

Er besucht alles, was auch nur peripher mit dem Thema IT zu tun hat. Keine Technologie ist ihm, eigentlich ein Data Engineer, zuwider. Am Ende seines Vorhabens lernt er Berlin, die wichtigsten IT-Veranstaltungen und -Orte sowie die großen Player im IT-Game kennen. Er macht Erfahrungen und baut Wissen auf, das in keinem Buch oder Onlinekurs zu finden ist.
Two general questions stood at the beginning of this PhD-thesis, namely: • What are the mechanisms which lead to the emergence and establishment of new technologies? • How can this process of technological change be influenced politically? In this sense, conceptual and theoretical interests were the early driving forces of the research work. This is also reflected in the considerable attention paid to the nature of technological change and political control. The result is an holistic per spective which builds on inputs from different disciplines and aims at dynamic interpretation. This, however, created a severe methodological problem: How could such a comprehensive perspective be used constructively? To develop this link between theory and forward-looking, policy-oriented analysis, and to devise a methodology which showed explicitly how this approach could be used in a con structive way were in fact the major challenges of this research project. The appli cation to the example of combined heat and power generation, and the comparison of the developments in the UK and in Germany serve the purpose to demonstrate how this approach and methodology can be implemented in practice. These as pects were also of particular interest to the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), one ofthe institutes of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, where most of the research work reported in this PhD-thesis was carried out.

Though much attention has been paid to different principles of justice, far less has been done reflecting on what the larger concern behind the notion is. In this work, Mathias Risse proposes that the perennial quest for justice is about ensuring that each individual has an appropriate place in what our uniquely human capacities permit us to build, produce, and maintain, and is appropriately respected for the capacity to hold such a place to begin with. Risse begins by investigating the role of political philosophers and exploring how to think about the global context where philosophical inquiry occurs. Next, he offers a quasi-historical narrative about how the notion of distributive justice identifies a genuinely human concern that arises independently of cultural context and has developed into the one we should adopt now. Finally, he investigates the core terms of this view, including stringency, moral value, ground and duties of justice.
