The phenomenon of enterprise growth is more a function of the nature of the entrepreneurial person and the policies and strategies adopted by a venture rather than the economic and environmental factors such as profitability or industry growth. This book focuses on the role of founder characteristics and venture policies in promoting enterprise-growth, with special focus on High Growth Enterprises. The research reported in this book is triggered by the that almost 95% of business start-ups either get closed down or stagnate, with only about 5% taking to a growth path, even though many more of them are profitable. The study presented in the book investigates the relationships between enterprise growth and venture policies as well as entrepreneurial characteristics such as the traits, motives and background of entrepreneurs. It also identifies the general entrepreneurial characteristics and points to the need for reviewing/redefining some of the concepts traditionally associated with entrepreneurship, such as achievement motive, power motive, desire for independence, risk-taking ability, support and encouragement, etc.
In St. Thomas and India, renowned scholars trace the historical, religious, and cultural connections link India's Syrian Christian community with St. Thomas the Apostle. They use modern historiographical methods seek to corroborate the ancient tradition that tells of St. Thomas's missionary journey to India in the middle of the first century, in which he established seven churches in some of the major commercial centers of Malabar. From this first churches, Christianity spread throughout the region. St. Thomas in India also examines the legacy of the ancient Christianity on the Syrian community in India today, as well as exploring the various cultural and religious connections between the Syrian church in Indian and other ancient churches in the east.
Surgeon on Trial is the story of an ordinary young boy, who against all odds, is making his life's journey through three continents experiencing blessings from unexpected sources. As a well-qualified general surgeon, he made the transition from Manhattan to a very small town in South Louisiana. As the only surgeon in the community, he had to be always available, and he did not have the luxury for a consult or second opinion in difficult cases. The unseen hand of the Lord was leading his hands in those situations. The plaintiff's attorney was very theatrical in making her summary for the jurors. After telling the story of an eighteen-wheeler cutting red light and crushing a small car that was proceeding in a green light, she added, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the truck driver in this story is the defendant in this case, Dr. Mathew, and the driver of the small vehicle that was demolished is the plaintiff, Ms. Black. You heard her story, how much she got hurt in the hands of Dr. Mathew. According to the law, the driver who caused the accident must compensate for the damages that he caused." Getting the presence of mind to face the plaintiff's attorney's ruthless attack without showing anger, frustration, or sorrow and getting the right words to use in answering her questions can happen with God's help. Looking back, trials are all learning experiences in life. It teaches you humility and lets you be aware of your vulnerability. It often gives you a new perspective on life. If only those of us who complain that the cost of medical care is high in the USA do something to ease the liability crisis. I have lost my hope in the legislature to be of much help in this; they themselves are mostly trial lawyers.

This edited volume develops an understanding of the strategies, processes, issues and concerns involved when small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) go international with their local products/services and vice versa. It is a compendium of eighteen selected chapters on the subject, supported by an introductory chapter. The contributions are organized in four parts based on the sub-themes they deal with. The first part, containing the introductory chapter, provides different perspectives on transnational entrepreneurship, returnee entrepreneurship and their linkages with the internationalization process. The subsequent parts have chapters dealing with three sub-themes of the subject - the internal factors (individual and firm-level resources), the external factors (entrepreneurial ecosystem), and the process of organizational transformation and change, respectively, in the context of SME internationalization. Special issues and challenges being faced by SME entrepreneurs in emerging economies have been highlighted in this book, discussing key contemporary issues with regard to internationalization in the three dimensions outlined above. Further, the book explains how an entrepreneur can engineer the transformation of his/her organization into an international SME. This book is a very useful resource for entrepreneurs and policy-makers in general, and for academics and researchers in particular, as it provides an overview of the contemporary research in the critical areas of SME internationalization and transnational entrepreneurship by highlighting the linkages between them with special reference to emerging economies.
