Why should the university or college student study political science? What good will it do him, or her, in later life? Will it help the student in getting a job, in “getting ahead”? First of all it should be made clear that the primary objective of this political study is “citizenship training”. Its aim is to better the condition of human beings by helping them to realise their rights and obligations. However the “good” citizen, who behaves and votes regularly, is no longer good enough. Mere innocence, virtue and good intentions will not help societies develop and move in the right direction. Students must also be citizens who are knowledgeable. They must know how their governments operate, what interests and forces are behind particular policies, what the results of such policies are likely to be, who their elected representatives are, and what they stand for. The governance and political study enables students to understand the processes and institutions of societal decision-making. Such an understanding often includes knowing who makes the decision, for what reason and in whose interest, as well as how decisions can be encouraged, modified or prevented by citizens, as a member of any social systems. The purpose of governance and political study is not limited to the provision of relevant information. Students can follow a career as a professional politician. Even though the said knowledge is not required to enter the political field but it is considered an asset if one has adequate grounding in this area. This book has been ‘blended’ by three authors in order to make it more effective and relevant to the current issues so that it can be understood by the readers efficiently. Finally they can work within government bureaucracies such as ministry or a state department especially those dealing with public planning, national integration, political development, national unity, policy making and diplomatic services.

Throughout the history of slavery, enslaved people organized resistance, escape, and rebellion. Sustaining them in this struggle was their music, some examples of which are sung to this day. While the existence of slave songs, especially spirituals, is well known, their character is often misunderstood. Slave songs were not only lamentations of suffering or distractions from a life of misery. Some songs openly called for liberty and revolution, celebrating such heroes as Gabriel Prosser and Nat Turner, and, especially, celebrating the Haitian Revolution. The fight for freedom also included fugitive slaves, free Black people, and their white allies who brought forth a set of songs that were once widely disseminated but are now largely forgotten, the songs of the abolitionists. Often composed by fugitive slaves and free Black people, and first appearing in the eighteenth century, these songs continued to be written and sung until the Civil War. As the movement expanded, abolitionists even published song books used at public meetings. Mat Callahan presents recently discovered songs composed by enslaved people explicitly calling for resistance to slavery, some originating as early as 1784 and others as late as the Civil War. He also presents long-lost songs of the abolitionist movement, some written by fugitive slaves and free Black people, challenging common misconceptions of abolitionism. Songs of Slavery and Emancipation features the lyrics of fifteen slave songs and fifteen abolitionist songs, placing them in proper historical context and making them available again to the general public. These songs not only express outrage at slavery but call for militant resistance and destruction of the slave system. There can be no doubt as to their purpose: the abolition of slavery, the emancipation of African American people, and a clear and undeniable demand for equality and justice for all humanity.

The long-haul overland run to the old Soviet Union, prior to Perestroika, Glasnost and the collapse of communism under Gorbachov back in the 1980s and 90s, has never really been documented in a book. Other than an occasional tale of the difficulties involved verbalised in pub conversations, and passed by word of mouth to those who might be interested enough to listen, it would never see the light of day. This tome is an excellent attempt by the author, Mat Ireland, to put that lack of the written word to rights. There have been a numerous books published about the Golden Era of overland haulage to the Middle East. But while that particular adventure was taking place, there were other frontiers being quietly breached and explored by hauliers pursuing a different market. This book is the story of just such a transport company, Kepstowe Freight. Sometimes known as the alternative Middle East, the overland routes into the old Soviet Union have never had their story recorded in print, yet they were just as gruelling on the driver and machine as any trips to the Arabian Peninsula or Iran. Whereas most peoples perception of the Middle East is all sunshine and sand, the same peoples perception of Russia is often all snow and freezing temperatures. Of course, neither picture is the total truth and the overbearing heat, arid climes and loneliness of the central Russian steppes could easily rival the desertification of Syria and Iraq. Kepstowe Freight was one of the British companies pioneering these early journeys behind the Iron Curtain into the dark, scary world of Soviet Union communism. Featuring mostly previously unseen photographs, A History of Kepstowe Freight Services Ltd repeats drivers' recollections about their escapades and adventures into a land rarely visited by western society, and their attempts at dealing with the inherent corruption, horrendous roads and unpredictable weather along the way. It goes on to show how exponentially rapidly the country changed after its 1990 collapse, with the accompanying culture shock to the populace and especially to the transport system.
