Membrane traffic is a broad field that studies the complex exchange of membranes that occurs inside the cell. Protein, lipids and other molecules traffic among intracellular organelles, and are delivered to, or transported from the cell surface by virtue of membranous carriers generally referred as "transport intermediates". These carriers have different shapes and sizes, and their biogenesis, modality of transport, and delivery to the final destination are regulated by a multitude of very complex molecular machineries. A concept that has clearly emerged in the last decade is that each membrane pathway does not represent a close system, but is fully integrated with all the other trafficking pathways. The aim of this book is to provide a general overview of the extent of this crosstalk.

In this chapter, we described the asymmetric total synthesis of merrilactone A and resolvin E2 based on the symmetry-driven strategy. The enantio- and diastereoselective transannular aldol reaction of the meso eight-membered diketone led to the efficient total syntheses of both enantiomers of merrilactone A, and the convergent assembly of the pseudo-enantiomeric fragments, prepared through the enantioselective solvolysis of the meso intermediate, resulted in total synthesis of resolvin E2. These syntheses demonstrate the power and generality of the symmetry-driven strategy for construction of both multicyclic and linear natural products.

During the past two decades Membrane Science and Technology has made tremendous progress and has changed from a simple laboratory tool to large scale processes with numerous applications in Medicine and Industry. This book reconstructs Keynesian macroeconomics so that it is compatible with the neoclassical dynamic microeconomic theory. This theory adopts three postulates: rational expectations, perfect price flexibility, and exclusion of the money in utility function (MIU). Based on the new theoretical finding that the Lucas model (1972) contains multiple equilibria, the author unifies Keynesian and monetarist theories within the same framework. The book applies the above basic theory to international macroeconomics and economic growth theory. New Keynesian theory contains logical inconsistencies: menu costs that have no close relationship with microeconomics and MIU, which implies that the money accumulated as wealth is never spent. These two assumptions do not proximate the real world. This book is the first to shed light on the recent opinion of taxpayers on tax and fiscal policy in Japan through an attitude questionnaire. It is said that Japanese taxpayers’ tax morale is high. However, taxpayers in Japan are often described as having strong resistance to tax increases, especially consumption tax increases. There is, then, a paradox with respect to the attitude toward tax policies among Japanese citizens. This book provides background information and basic descriptive statistics from Internet surveys in Japan by the authors, who introduce their results by focusing on tax morale and opinions with respect to a consumption tax hike. The summary statistics indicate that while tax morale is high, half of the respondents oppose a consumption tax hike from 8% to 10%. Furthermore, the ideal consumption tax rate for most respondents was less than 10% in both surveys, suggesting that Japanese taxpayers have a strong tax resistance, attributable to distrust of government and politicians.
