Pulmonary endothelium forms the inner lining of blood vessels, where it interprets the complex mechanical and chemical environment within the circulation and adjusts its behavior to facilitate vascular homeostasis. Although endothelium fulfills many essential functions, including regulation of vascular pressure, circulating cell transmigration, coagulation, and hormone metabolism and/or delivery, a principal role is to form a semi-permeable barrier that limits fluid, solute and macromolecular access to the interstitial space. Physiological properties that govern such permeability characteristics are defined by the Starling equation, which assumes that endothelial cells throughout the circulation are all alike. However, in recent years it has become evident that endothelial cells in pulmonary arteries, capillary and veins are heterogeneous in structure and function. Here, we review evidence for endothelial heterogeneity among these pulmonary vascular segments, and consider the implications for such heterogeneity in lung fluid balance, especially as it relates to the Starling equation.

In addition he edited Deutsch-Amerikanisches Magazin which was also important as a German-American historical journal. Born in Ankum, Germany, Rattermann emigrated with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio, and thereafter played an important role in German-American cultural affairs both regionally and nationally. This book is a re-edition of Sister Mary Edmund Spanheimer's biography of Heinrich Rattermann, which has long been out-of-print. Mary Spanheimer was a professor of German at the University of Saint Francis, Joliet, Illinois. Her biography on Rattermann is considered to be the definitive work on the topic.

In this age of communication and in this age of increasingly complex scientific research, effective communication is vital. Yet, good communication is difficult and rare, and poor communication hampers the development of the scientific enterprise. The reader or listener may become frustrated or exhausted at poorly presented information and lose interest. Examples abound of poorly presented papers. In fact, poor communication is becoming traditional at a time when understanding of science is crucial. What Is Communication? Communication is the giving of information to another, a sharing of intangibles. To communicate is to be sociable and generous. It is a gracious and civilized act. More pertinent to this book, communication is an essential factor in the development of science as a shared body of verified knowledge. Scientists, from the first, openly communicated their discoveries, thus distinguishing their work from that of astrologers, alchemists, and wizards. Communication is a basic human function and, as such, is as necessary for survival now as it always has been. It is essential to the survival of science. Communication requires participation and exchange: one giving, the other receiving. It is fluid and dynamic and should be rewarding and pleasurable to all concerned.

Combining critical analysis, Marxist and feminist theory, and labor history, Mary E. Triece analyzes the protest tactics employed by working class women to challenge dominant ideologies surrounding domesticity. She details the rhetorical strategies used by women to argue for their rights as workers in the paid labor force and as caregivers in the home. Their overtly coercive tactics included numerous sit-ins, strikes, and boycotts that won tangible gains for working poor and unemployed women. The book also gives voice to influential figures in the 1930s labor movement (many of whom were members of the Communist Party, U.S.A.), such as Ella Reeve Bloor, Margaret Cowl, Anna Damon, Ann Burlak, and Grace Hutchins. Triece ultimately argues that these confrontational protest tactics of the 1930s remain relevant in today’s fights for more humane workplaces and better living conditions.
