A biography of Margaret Haughery, the beloved woman who went from a life of poverty to one of philanthropy and became known as the “Angel” of New Orleans. Margaret Haughery gave everything she ever had to the orphans and the poor. Despite being unable either to read or write, she possessed an incredible business acumen, which allowed her to donate—including what she bequeathed in her will—more than $500,000 throughout her life. What is perhaps even more astounding is that Margaret lost everyone she ever loved, yet she was still able to give so much love. As a child in the Maryland area, this Irish immigrant lost her parents and her baby sister when they died in a fever epidemic. She was separated from her brother in the aftermath, and he very well may have perished in the epidemic as well. Then, when she was a young wife and mother in New Orleans, her husband died of consumption. Soon afterward, her newborn daughter died in her sleep. Determined to not succumb to self-pity and depression, Margaret, strengthened by her Roman Catholic faith, dedicated the rest of her life to helping the orphans and the poor. Helping to support an orphanage, she first started a dairy to provide milk for the children. Then she went on to earn a small fortune from running a local bakery. This financial success allowed her to donate enormous monetary sums to charity. Still, her fiscal generosity was eclipsed by her spiritual gifts. This docunovel has dialogue added to enliven the text.

Delineating the contours of this fascination, the book begins with the works of Carlo Lizzani (Behind the Great Wall, 1958) and Michelangelo Antonioni (Chung Kuo—China, 1972), both of whom ventured to China with the aim of documenting new, yet physically and culturally distant, realities. Their documentary investigations yielded to fictional portrayals, from the lavish view of a historical Middle Kingdom by director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor, 1987) to the stark consideration of Italian economic exchange with contemporary China by Gianni Amelio (The Missing Star, 2006). The wave of Chinese migration to Italy in the late twentieth century created a new sense of otherness within Italy as Chinese migrants became the subjects of fictional narratives and documentaries in the works of Stefano Incerti (Gorbaciof, 2010) and Andrea Segre (Shun Li and the Poet, 2011) and Riccardo Cremona and Vincenzo De Cecco (Miss Little China, 2009). The cloning of two G protein-coupled cannabinoid receptors, termed CB1 and CB2, in the early 1990s has stimulated and facilitated research conducted on the physiological function of cannabinoid actions in the brain and throughout the body. In the twenty years since the identification of these two receptors, endogenous ligands (endocannabinoids) for these receptors have been identified, their biosynthetic and metabolic pathways have been discerned, and their functional and regulatory action for signalling through CB1 and CB2 receptors have been described. More recently, it has become has become evident that cannabinoids exert actions at non-CB1, non-CB2 receptors. Much less is understood about these actions. Many of these novel?targets? are in the process of being characterized functionally and physiologically, and the therapeutic value of targeting these non-CB1, non-CB2 receptors is being evaluated. The purpose of this volume is to present the current knowledge on the atypical actions of cannabinoids on these new targets. This book is intended as a scientific resource for cannabinoid researchers carrying out animal and human experiments, and for those who are interested in learning about future directions in cannabinoid research. Additionally, this book may be of value to investigators currently working outside the field of cannabinoid research who have an interest in learning about these compounds and their atypical cannabinoid signalling. This book provides insight into the potential medical application of cannabinoids and their therapeutic development for the treatment of human disease.
