On the lake she responds to a man's call for assistance by towing his boat to shore where the personable young man transforms into a vicious character with a gun. Parents John and Margaret hear of her disappearance when her empty boat is found drifting on the lake. They are soon joined by sons Jim and Brad, their wives Janet and Cassie, to wait at the family farm. The novel moves in suspense from the Jensen farm to the shack and back again as Anne's family lives with rage, fear, flashes of humor, family love, secrets and a strong faith.
