A highly accessible overview of the central themes of women's studies, suitable for introductory reading in undergraduate courses or for a more general audience's introduction to the meaning of feminism and its relevance as a progressive force in society. The authors tackle six broad topics that dominate the field and are key to understanding women's experiences and prospects: women's bodies, anger & desires, sexuality, internal backlash, feminist methods, & identity politics. The authors consider why there is a resistance to the development of American feminism and women's studies in the academy, with their continuing representation of marginalized, excluded, and silenced voices.
In the first history of American Catholic feminism, Henold explores the movement from the 1960s through the early 1980s, showing that although Catholic feminists had much in common with their sisters in the larger American feminist movement, Catholic feminism was distinct and had not been simply imported from outside. Henold demonstrates that efforts to reconcile faith and feminism reveal both the complex nature of feminist consciousness and the creative potential of religious feminism.

Since 2002, the Roman Catholic Church has been in crisis over the sexual abuse of minors by priests and the cover-up of those crimes by bishops. Over 11,000 alleged victims have reported their experiences to the Church, and more than 4,700 priests since 1950 have been credibly accused of sexually victimizing minors. The Church has paid over one billion dollars to adults who claim to have been sexually abused by priests and there is no end in sight to these lawsuits. Celibacy, homosexuality in the priesthood, the infiltration into the priesthood of secular moral relativism, too much liberalism in the Church since Vatican II, damaging rollback of Vatican II reforms by conservative prelates--all have been suggested as causes for the crisis. This book, however, begins with the premise that, because the pattern of abuse and cover-up was so similar across the world, there is something fundamentally awry with Church traditions and power structures in relationship to sexuality and sexual abuse. Specifically, in chapters on suffering and sadomasochism, bodies and gender, desire and sexuality, celibacy and homosexuality, the author concludes that aspects of the Catholic theology of sexuality set the stage for the abuse of minors and its cover-up. Frawley-O'Dea also analyzes the American bishops' lack of pastoral care and tendency towards clerical narcissism--the belief that the needs of the hierarchy represent the needs of the wider Church--as central factors in the scandal. She balances this criticism with a discussion of the backgrounds of the bishops presiding over the crisis and the challenges they faced in their relationships with the Pope and Vatican officials. Drawing on twenty years of clinical experience, she imagines the dynamics of sexual abuse both from the victim's point of view and from the priest's, and she probes why the Church hierarchy, fellow priests, and lay people were silent for so long. Finally, Frawley-O'Dea examines factors internal to the Church and outside of it that drew this scandal into the public square and kept it there.
The Church cannot be understood without women..."- Pope Francis, July 28, 2013 In the new book Promise and Challenge, ten diverse Catholic women -- theologians, philosophers, attorneys, and an economist -- answer Pope Francis' call to address the deeper questions about the meaning of womanhood and the role of women in the Church. Based on their presentations at the 2014 Symposium on Women in the Church, these women help move the conversation forward through their intriguing insights and analysis of established teachings and traditions combined with original scholarship and new ideas. Through their personal experience, spiritual depth, and professional expertise, you'll examine: Threshold issues and important context to expand the role of women in the Church Several important aspects of complementarity that require further theological development theologically Practical issues related to the place of women in the church The promise and challenge of the future With insight, clarity, and great love for the Church, these women touch on both the challenges of today and the promise of tomorrow for women in the Church.
In 1963, as Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique appeared and civil rights activists marched on Washington, a separate but related social movement emerged among American Catholics, says Mary Henold. Thousands of Catholic feminists--both lay women and women religious--marched, strategized, theologized, and prayed together, building sisterhood and confronting sexism in the Roman Catholic Church. In the first history of American Catholic feminism, Henold explores the movement from the 1960s through the early 1980s, showing that although Catholic feminists had much in common with their sisters in the larger American feminist movement, Catholic feminism was distinct and had not been simply imported from outside. Catholic feminism grew from within the church, rooted in women's own experiences of Catholicism and religious practice, Henold argues. She identifies the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), an inspiring but overtly sexist event that enraged and exhilarated Catholic women in equal measure, as a catalyst of the movement within the church. Catholic feminists regularly explained their feminism in terms of their commitment to a gospel mandate for social justice, liberation, and radical equality. They considered feminism to be a Christian principle. Yet as Catholic feminists confronted sexism in the church and the world, Henold explains, they struggled to integrate the two parts of their self-definition. Both Catholic culture and feminist culture indicated that such a conjunction was unlikely, if not impossible. Henold demonstrates that efforts to reconcile faith and feminism reveal both the complex nature of feminist consciousness and the creative potential of religious feminism.

Sincerely Mary" is a delightful collection of columns written by Mary Lee Shannon, the owner and editor of the small town Texas newspaper, the Wharton Spectator, during the 1950's.She editorialized in an era that a person could speak their mind clearly and without the filter of political correctness. She said exactly what she meant. For this reason, her writing provoked an immediate response. Issue by issue, the reader was either touched by her sincere compassion or was enraged by her politics. Her writing was not the frivolous voice of an uninformed debutante, to the contrary, hers was the rational voice of Mid-Century America before politics and radical idealism took hold. The book is lovingly compiled and edited by her daughter-in-law, author, Pat Shannon.
Mary is no stranger to the theatre. A graduate of Moser Conservatory of Drama, Voice & Music in New York City and a graduate of Empire State College with a degree in Theatre, Film and specialized in Voices/over's. She teaches Piano, Drama and Voices/Over's. She taught for 5 years in the Commack & Sayville school districts. She also has appeared in "Lovers &other strangers, "Fiddler on the Roof" "Grease" and was directed by "Brian Dennehy in "Guys & Dolls". She has appeared on Broadway, off Broadway, Radio, and TV & Stock. Her cast members are all seasoned professionals.
