Mary Maverick's memoirs are a Texas classic. They chronicle a strong, brave woman shepherding her family through tumultuous times on the raw Texas frontier. First settling in a rustic home in 1838 San Antonio with her husband, the legendary Samuel Maverick, the family was forced to flee invading Mexican forces during the famed Runaway Scrape. They settled again in Gonzales, but Sam was in San Antonio when Mexican General Woll captured the town, taking Sam prisoner and confining him in the notorious Perote Prison. After Sam was released, the Mavericks moved to the windswept Matagorda Peninsula-with Mary so sick on the journey that they laid boards in the wagon to make a bed-before returning to San Antonio two years later. Sam and Mary had ten children; four died before they reached the age of eight. During the Civil War, four of Mary's sons served in the Confederate Army. Though Sam had been in the center of the storm during the Texas Revolution, he was approaching 60 years of age when the Civil War broke out; he spent the war with Mary, serving as a judge and mayor of San Antonio. Notable characters pepper the narrative, including Alexander Somervell, Jack Hays, Dr. George Cupples, Deaf Smith, Cherokee Chief Bowles, Matilda Lockhart, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Mirabeau Lamar, Juan Seguin, and too many others to mention. This is not a typical frontier wife's memoir-it is a first-hand account of the founding of Texas.

A lifetime of wisdom from a true American patriot The country is more polarized than it has been for decades, but John McCain is the rare public figure who has earned the respect of colleagues and constituents on both sides of the aisle. A model for bipartisanship and political integrity, in his forty years in politics McCain has never been afraid to buck trends or ruffle a few feathers. His words are more important today than ever. Sample quotes: “In prison, I fell in love with my country.” “Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone.” “Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history.” “It is your character, and your character alone, that will make your life happy or unhappy.”

History is people. So often history is a record of battles, events, battle heroes, with many dates to remember. This book of stories with authentic historical settings and events places the emphasis on the people and the way they lived. Around 1900 the great grey wolf, or lobo, was hunted almost to extinction in Texas. Because they killed so many cattle, the ranchers hired men to crawl into their dins and kill mothers and cubs. Moving to the high plains was traumatic for women and children, but they made homes and helped build towns where nothing was before. Taking a trip of more than a thousand miles before roads were paved, in a Model T Ford, was a wonderous adventure. Ground squirrels, roadrunners, toads, were once numerous in the wild, but are rarely seen now. All of these people and things make the study of history a real adventure and fun reading.
Katie Wilk and her black Labrador retriever, Maverick, are training for Search and Rescue certification, and Katie is well into the school year with her math and science students. But a series of shocking events rock their small town—a teenage beauty queen is found dead in a state park, Katie’s neighbor’s three-year-old daughter is abducted, and Maverick’s SAR certification exercise turns into a real emergency. Doctor Pete Erickson, the man Katie was starting to have feelings for, seems curiously out of touch with her these days, but the new veterinarian in town may turn out to have quite a lot in common with her. Can Katie put together the pieces and learn whether the crimes are connected, or will she and those dear to her be put in even greater danger? Praise for the Katie & Maverick Cozy Mysteries: “Immediately captivating! Katie and Maverick are destined to become a notable amateur sleuth team in the mystery world.” –Connie Shelton, USA Today bestselling author
Christmas is fast approaching, but the joy and activity of the holiday season is marred by death. There’s a history between Katie’s landlady, Ida Clemashevski and her neighbor, the elegant Grace Loehr. The two hadn’t spoken in 40 years and had just recently made amends. But when they both bid on the same unusual art piece at the Holiday Gala, the claws come out again. Katie Wilk’s idea is to have the artist simply make another of his intricate creations, something along the same lines, but when she goes to his studio to propose the idea, she discovers he’s been murdered. Suspects abound, but then Grace also dies unexpectedly. Are the two deaths related? Katie’s landlady is the police chief’s main suspect for the crimes, and the only way to show proof of Ida’s innocence is to find the guilty party. It doesn’t look good. The clues mount up, and Katie and Maverick find themselves braving a bitter Minnesota winter storm in order to catch the killer. Will Christmas Eve be a time of joy or will Katie and her beloved retriever be caught in a deathtrap? Praise for the Katie and Maverick Cozy Mysteries: “Immediately captivating! But the ice is a treacherous place, and one of Katie’s students accidentally falls through, creating a harrowing situation and a rescue by Katie and her trained black Lab, Maverick. Later, Katie discovers the spot where Brock went into the icy water was deliberately cut, and the real intended victim turns out to be one of the town’s least lovable, curmudgeonly characters. But what really pulls Katie into the thick of the investigation is that Dr. Pete Erickson, the man who makes her heart beat faster, is accused of murder. There’s no way Katie can let that go! Katie and Maverick are out for their walk when Maverick dashes through the moving gate at a self-storage facility and they get locked in. By the time the police respond to the silent alarms the pair have set off, the smell of exhaust fumes has begun to seep from one of the garage-sized units, and the car inside is quickly engulfed in a ball of flame. Was it a suicide that turned extra messy, or did someone rig the expensive sports car to explode and kill the woman inside? When Katie starts to ask the tough questions, it seems there were a long list of people who didn’t much care for Sophie Grainger and several of them had motives for murder. But Katie also has her days full with the upcoming holiday season and her students who are participating in a mock-trial competition. Will the kids make it to the state finals under the expert coaching of a local attorney who has joined their team? And will Katie and Maverick have a wonderful Christmas this year, the first in which Katie’s dad has been home since the horrific shooting incident that nearly killed him? Join Katie, Maverick, and their newfound extended family for the holidays, mixed, of course with the usual action from their Search and Rescue operations and the breathless drama that Mary Seifert brings to all her mystery novels. Katie Wilk is still reeling from astounding news about her late husband’s history that she’d never discovered before his shockingly sudden death. She’s looking forward to getting back to her students now that winter break is over, taking her mind off the difficulties of the past eighteen months. But then ZaZa Lavigne shows up, the woman who can push all of Katie’s buttons, and guess what—she’ll be teaching in Katie’s department! However, Katie’s personal issues are quickly overshadowed when an heirloom diamond ring seems to have been switched at the jewelry store for a less valuable one and Susie Kelton, Katie’s former rival for Dr. Pete’s attention, comes to her for help in recovering the real ring. The questions keep compounding and Katie begins to wonder if she and Maverick will ever untangle all the puzzles. Praise for the Katie and Maverick Cozy Mysteries: “Immediately captivating! New York Times Editors’ Choice, One of NPR’s Best Books of the Year In this “infinitely readable” biography, award-winning author Mary Gabriel chronicles the meteoric rise and enduring influence of the greatest female pop icon of the modern era: Madonna (People Magazine) With her arrival on the music scene in the early 1980s, Madonna generated nothing short of an explosion—as great as that of Elvis or the Beatles—taking the nation by storm with her liberated politics and breathtaking talent. Within two years of her 1983 debut album, a flagship Macy's store in Manhattan held a Madonna lookalike contest featuring Andy Warhol as a judge, and opened a department called “Madonna-land.” But Madonna was more than just a pop star. Everywhere, fans gravitated to her as an emblem of a new age, one in which feminism could shed the buttoned-down demeanor of the 1970s and feel relevant to a new generation. Amid the scourge of AIDS, she brought queer identities into the mainstream, fiercely defending a person's right to love whomever—and be whoever—they wanted. Despite fierce criticism, she never separated her music from her political activism. And, as an artist, she never stopped experimenting. Madonna existed to push past boundaries by creating provocative, visionary music, videos, films, and live performances that changed culture globally. Deftly tracing Madonna’s story from her Michigan roots to her rise to super-stardom, master biographer Mary Gabriel captures the dramatic life and achievements of one of the greatest artists of our time.
