Subjecting this claim to critical scrutiny, in this book, Andrés Luque-Ayala and Simon Marvin examine the cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts in which urban computational logics have emerged. They consider the rationalities and techniques that constitute emerging computational forms of urbanization, including work on digital urbanism, smart cities, and, more recently, platform urbanism. They explore the modest potentials and serious contradictions of reconfiguring urban life, city services, and urban-networked infrastructure through computational operating systems—an urban OS. Luque-Ayala and Marvin argue that in order to understand how digital technologies transform and shape the city, it is necessary to analyze the underlying computational logics themselves. Drawing on fieldwork that stretches across eleven cities in American, European, and Asian contexts, they investigate how digital products, services, and ecosystems are reshaping the ways in which the city is imagined, known, and governed. They discuss the reconstitution of the contemporary city through digital technologies, practices, and techniques, including data-driven governance, predictive analytics, digital mapping, urban sensing, digitally enabled control rooms, civic hacking, and open data narratives. Our ancestors began arriving in eastern Kansas about 1855. Few white people were in Kansas at that time as it was illegal to settle in "Indian Territory" until the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. But soon thousands of newcomers began arriving, especially after the Civil War, and by 1900 the area was fully settled. But life remained largely unchanged from that experienced by people for thousands of years previously. Automobiles, telephones, television, tractors, air travel, electricity and good roads did not exist on the farm in 1900 much less in 1855. The United States was still an agrarian society dependent on horse power supplemented by a few railroads and steam engines. Things were about to change dramatically! Between 1900 and 1920 widespread introduction of tractors, automobiles, airplanes, radio and telephones changed life on the farm forever. Our grandparents and great grandparents not only lived through and adapted to these profound changes, they fought and won WWI. Drought and depression followed in the 1930's and then they won WWII in the 1940's. We came along about that time as the sixth generation of Lindsey's in the area and the first post WWII generation. Much of the life our ancestors knew on the frontier had already passed, but remnants still existed. Most importantly, many of our ancestors who had lived through and experienced these times were still around and were eager to share their life stories with us. We soaked it up and have now tried to pass it on. We think you will enjoy learning something of what it was like growing up on the farm in the 1940's and 50's and hearing of our ancestors lives in early Kansas. In many ways it was a simpler life then but it certainly wasn't easy. Marvin and Steven Lindsey

Adam left his family in Germany, sailed the Atlantic, worked at a lumber camp, and hopped the freight trains to arrive in Wisconsin as a farm laborer. Matilda, a teenage girl, left Hamburg with her family for a grueling journey to Wisconsin. The book includes the romantic account of Adam and Matilda's courtship and marriage in Wisconsin and their eventful journey to Minnesota by covered wagon. Phillip, a lonely, discouraged young man, left Germany and worked his way through the port in Amsterdam onto a ship bound for New York. As a lumberjack and a farm hand, he found his way to Minnesota Territory. Lucinda, as a nine-year-old girl, traveled with her family about six hundred miles by covered wagons from Ohio to Minnesota Territory. When she was sixteen, Phillip convinced Lucinda's father that she was old enough for courtship and marriage. Woven into the stories are the faith longings of these four people that drew them to transforming conversion experiences that sustained them through the hardships of pioneer life. These two couples conscripted land, raised large families, and were pillars of faith who helped establish a dynamic church in the author's hometown of Racine, Minnesota.

The scientific goal of the present work was to model the workpiece material behavior of steels in the metal cutting process depending on the occurring thermo-mechanical loads. The results of this work shall make a significant contribution to the predictive process design of the cutting process by means of Finite Element (FE) simulations for the virtual representation of the reality in the sense of the digital twin. To achieve the objective, extensive empirical examinations were conducted in a first step, which included conventional material scientific and orthogonal cutting tests. This enabled the establishment of a database of the workpiece response with increasing thermo-mechanical loads. During the orthogonal cutting examinations, integral and locally resolved process results were measured, which were used as calibration and validation variables in the modeling of the workpiece material behavior. By extending an established friction test bench with a workpiece pre-heating system, the friction conditions between tool and workpiece could be investigated under conditions equivalent to the cutting process. Based on the experimental results, a friction model was derived, in which the observed effects of thermal softening and the localized adhesion-induced increase in the apparent friction coefficient were superposed. A phenomenological material model was developed to describe the workpiece material behavior in the cutting process. The formulation of the material mode was developed based on empirical examinations as well as results from the state of the art. The material model was implemented in an FE-chip formation simulation using a subroutine. A hybrid optimization algorithm was developed to inversely determine the material model parameters. By means of the optimization algorithm, the material model parameters could be systematically determined inversely, taking the experimentally determined process observables into account. An automated procedure linked to a user interface lowered the entry hurdle for industrial companies and unexperienced users of FE-simulations and reduced the computational effort for the inverse parameter determination to about 10 days of computational execution time. The quality of the developed models and the determined model parameters were further verified by a final deduction step using the industrial example of face turning.

This book was written largely for the benefit of the writers children and grandchildren so they would know something of the life and hardships faced by their pioneering ancestors. It was inspired by their questions about our childhood and youth and their own memories of many visits to the Kansas farms of their grandparents and great grandparents. However, we think many other readers will enjoy learning something about what it was like growing up on a midwestern farm in the 1940s and 50s. A time that was in many ways much simpler but certainly not easy. We had the privilege of knowing personally grandparents and great grandparents who had lived through the many profound changes that occurred around the change of the century. Automobiles, tractors and telephones had only arrived on the farm about 30 years earlier and the grandparents’ barns and garages were still filled with horse-drawn equipment and harnesses from an earlier era. Electricity and graveled roads only occurred after WWII in our memory and running water and indoor bathrooms were still not common on many farms as late as 1955. It was a different and changing world of which we were privileged to be a part. Almost all our relatives lived nearby, and neighbors all knew us and didn’t hesitate to let our parents know if we were up to any mischief. We were expected to take responsibility, work hard, always be truthful, stay out of trouble, study hard and plant straight rows. All are excellent traits that unfortunately are not as valued today as they were then. In the book we have shared some history of the area and some stories of incidents from our lives that were not uncommon among farm families. We hope readers enjoy learning about us and our families.
